Career

Gammon began his career at Cardiff City, after being spotted playing for Mumbles Boys Club at the age of sixteen. He was handed a professional contract on his seventeenth birthday, making his debut, alongside fellow debutant Derek Tapscott, soon after in a 4–1 victory over Grimsby Town in September 1958 and his performances earned him a call up to the Wales under-23 side. The following season he scored his first, and only, goal for Cardiff in a 4–4 draw with Stoke City and helped the club gain promotion to Division One.
In February 1961, he suffered a major fracture in his leg after colliding with Denis Law during a league match against Manchester City.[1] He attempted several comebacks after the injury but broke the same leg twice in the following three seasons and subsequently dropped out of professional football, joining Southern Football League side Kettering Town where he took over as manager of the side three months after his arrival.[2] Gammon went on to make over 300 appearances in all competitions for Kettering.[3] He left the club in December 1971, stepping down as manager after six years at Rockingham Road, being replaced by Ron Atkinson.[4]

After Dennis Law "done him" at Ninian Park, he had the same leg broken by a fellow team mate during training. Not sure of the player, but know he was another Scot.

Cheers for the stats on him. To say I'm proud of him would be an understatement.

It was for this reason that City played in white although it was probably a very late decision - certainly the programme for that game has City listed as playing in Blue. It was also a dull dreary day so the TV company possibly made a a late request and only City would have had access to their alternative kit.

Thank you. I knew this was the only game played at home in white that season,, i just wanted to know how many other people knew. ;) Just out of interest, why was white described as our "lucky" Kit then?

You clearly didn't read one of the links posted above, as the link (http://www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk/page/New ... 11,00.html), states that we played in white against Villa and then in white 3 days later, against Plymouth! :) :ayatollah:

No need to be tetchy, I'm not Bluebird Since 1848 and I thought you wanted to know all the facts, which I clearly didn't know either!

I'm not getting tetchy, i would just like to know the real facts of the matter.
Richard Sheppard wrote, in his splendid trilogy history of our club, that the white kit was "lucky" during the 59/60 season,,, & after promotion that season, who would disagree. But why was the white kit deemed lucky?
My father, who followed City 50/60's can't remember.

City played in all-white against Aston Villa at home (April 1960), winning 1-0 to secure promotion to Div 1.

I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer either, I was just pointing out to Steve the Tea TM, that we had moved on to why was the kit deemed to be lucky!

I've phoned my father who is nearly 80 years old now, but he cannot remember either! :ayatollah:

because nobody knows the answer, I thought I'd call the old man and ask him why he wore the white away strip at home that day?

...and he couldn't remember either!!!!!!!!!!!

He thinks it may have been due to the referee deciding that the colours were too similar.
Villa may not have had a change of kit, so City changed to the away strip.

He joked that in those days you couldn't throw your shirt into the crowd as you had to wear it the following week!
The same shirt was designed to last you the season.

so, no nearing knowing then.
I can only think of Richard Shepherd. He'd probably know
