On the wider scale, it's simply a few extraordinarily pampered animals dying.

So if a child is dying from a rare human disease and dies, but was from a rich family, would that child be considered as simply one of a few extraordinarily pampered child dying, no I thought not. Regardless, a life is a life, pampered or not!

A lot of posters trying to come across all macho with the thread. Only putting what most would say.

Horses die all the time from racing and its just more "out there today"

My argument is why do they set the race up like this!! It's almost like the race is created to cause mayhem for entertainment and that I can't have so I won't be betting on the horses again simples

You seem to be forgetting that a child is a human. Human life must be valued above the life of an animal of any sort. So essentially your comparison is distorted to say the least.

I am comparing your analysis. You are the one condoning the whole event simply because they are pampered animals. Doesn't do them much good when they're 6foot under does it

Well, that was a terrible and flawed comparison. The general event is fine, what needs regulating is the size of the jumps, which at present are too high.

However, you must remember that these are just animals. Animals are inferior to humans and some people seem to forget this.

I was lucky enough to watch Synchronised win the Cheltenham Gold Cup just a couple of weeks ago and on that day the horse was absolutely magnificent and the way he sprinted up the hill, and believe me it is a hill at Cheltenham, was a sight to behold. I enjoy watching National Hunt racing and no one will ever convince me that if the horse didn't want to race that they would show the desire to win that Synchronised showed that day.

Whatever happened today that resulted in him unseating Tony McCoy and running free should have resulted in the horse being automatically withdrawn from the race. At the end of the day after running free just before the longest horse race in the UK makes him unfit to take part. The fact that he was allowed to race is a disgrace and those responsible for the control of the sport need to act to stop this ever happening again. If McCoy had been unseated during the race he would not have been allowed to remount and resume racing, how can it be accepted to allow the horse to race after expending god knows how much energy running free.

I have watched the Grand National live and it is a truely wonderful sporting spectacle but that is lost whenever a horse is hurt.

Sadly today two horses have lost thier lives and at least one could and should have been prevented and that's what upsets me.

I mustn't remember anything lol. That is your opinion. I don't/won't accept or condone cruelty of any form.
Difference of opinion, just leave it there.

I'm a vegetarian and that's exactly why I don't watch it or bet on it, animals are not inferior, just abused because they can't talk!

It's not about animal rights or any thing to do with veggies. Castle blue makes a good point!!

There all guzzling champagne now and celebrating an "entertaining" day!

They have to ease up a bit on the amount of horses and fences and then we can enjoy some entertaining horse racing!!

We have superior brain function, and consequently can process far more complex thought processes. We have the ability to apply what we've learned and are even able to imagine and come up with new applications for previouslly learned concepts or ideas.

What made you become a vegetarian? A decision I fully respect.

We also have opposable thumbs. The key to superiority

Its nothing to do with talking. Its called intelligence, thats what sets us apart and why we are superior to animals (and women) :D

Syncronised didnt even hurt himself when he unseated AP.

He carried on and actualy hurt himself at the 11th fence without a jockey on his back which begs the question to all those who are saying he didnt want to race, why did he carry on?

Surely once AP was unseated he would have stopped and said no thank you, not for me today, however he carried on and hurt himself in the process.

Accordingtopeter is another matter.

They need to have a serious look at Bechers Brook in all fairness

At the end of the day its a sport. You dont here many people going on about the fatalities for the other 362 days of the year
there are racing.

Where do you draw the line?

If your against Horse Racing surely you must be a vegetarian, if not it makes you a hypocite. (sp)

A horse will carry on jumping after it unseats a rider simply because there are other horses around it doing the same and they're pack animals and have it ingrained in them to carry on doing what others in the pack are doing.

I find it very distasteful that others can get pleasure out of seeing animals used in this way, but hey, that's just my opinion, and I'm sure we'll all agree that we're all entitled to those

hate the sport, if you can call it one.

They could kill two birds with one stone and ram fish in the horses long mouths to choke them to death.....love to watch that!

Shit happens.

We all die eventually anyway, wether it's falling over a fence with a wee man on your back or getting hit by the 51 bus because you fell under it pissed.

How many of you eat fish, sausage, bacon etc?

Exactly.

Is breeding horses for entertainment really that different to breeding animals to eat? An animal bred to entertain will lead a better life and have a lot better chance to live out it's natural life than an animal bred to feed.

However, the fact that people can get pleasure from something like this race is what I have a problem with.

I'm sure in due course, such things will be outlawed, as cock fighting and bear baiting have been.

I know some of the posters above are clearly just trying to be deliberately stupid, so I discount those comments, but there are obviously millions that still watch the terrible thing - I suppose what we need is more people speaking out against it, and over time more and more people who now watch it will see how cruel it is and it will ultimately be stopped.

Difference is those sports intent was to kill/injure the animals.

This is a race that unfortunately often causes one or two deaths.

Ideally it could be made safer without taking any of the excitement out. That way everyone wins.

I see the distinction, and its a fair point, but when you have a race that has fatalities virtually every year like this one, then if its not drastically changed, then its almost the same as deliberately causing equine fatalities, as the organisers have the power to stop the cruelty.

If it could be made safer and such fatalities were highly unlikely, then I would have a different view. I would still not personally want to watch it, but I would have less problems with it.
