We should sign him what happend to the 20 mil tranfer budget MM had then :?

Sounds like the budget was never that big and we brought in MM because there was a number of good players on free's that wanted to play for him.

If i had to guess i would say the budget for buying is more like 4or5 mil max.

fair play to MM so far hes building a good team on a shoe string budget.

Nottage Blue wrote:I think the Goodwillie deal is dead and has been for a while now and I'm not particularly bothered of we sign him or not. I think you're over-hyping a player who is, essentially, unproven outside Scotland. Who's to say that Mason and Gestede won't be the rough diamond you say Goodwillie is? We have 5 or 6 strikers at the club now, which is enough. You also talk about width in the side, or lack of it. How would Goodwillie offer us that, being a centre forward? Goodwillie also, it seems, brings a lot of baggage with him and I think that he could be more trouble than he's worth anyway. I don't think he'd be here in the 5 or 6 years you also touch on. Miller is a very good signing and I thionk will be the last striker we buy

This is a brilliant post. Im gutted we never got Goodwillie. But HAVE to trust in
Malky Mackay. Like you say, Mason or Gestede could prove to be just as good.

Perhaps Goodwillie IS just another mess waiting to happen.

As for the panicking over 'not enough wide men'... jesus!!!

Mackay has addressed in total Cardiff City's main weakness over the last
few years - defensive/holding midfielders..

Now why on earth does anyone think hes not going to get enough wide
men in?? FFS... Watford were deadly out wide last season... Do you think
he's f*cking forgotten

Get a grip

the 20 mil budget is for the whole season and includes player wages... not just for transfer fees...

last season our total costs were 16 mil... take out chopra and the other high earners who have left and we dont have a bad budget.. you are right though with about 4-5 mil available for transfers...

I couldn't give a shit if we signed Miller, will he be around in five years? No he will be long retired as for Goodwillie he will be reaching his peak.

We have an opportunity here to sign a real rough diamond at a reasonable price considering hes only 22 yet we are bottling it for a good player in Miller but high wages and absolutely no re-sale value in the future.

We possess only 3 match winners in the squad- Earnie (Hope he's still got it), Miller and Whitts. A lot of our rivals have 6 or 7.

We lack width and pace in abundance and have no proven alternative up front.

Mid table obscurity beckons unless 3 fantastic signings are made next few weeks, yes Bellers would make a massive difference but come on I think this one is getting boring we need to move on and if it comes off it will be a bonus.

Come on Cardiff City prove me wrong.....just this once! :ayatollah:

Fantastic post Bluebird80 - I completely agree with every thing you have said. Sign Winky up now!!!

Some people on here are saying we should sign Goodwillie as his value can only increase and others are saying he's a gamble. Of course, if he's a gamble and he pays off, then his value will increase but, if he's a flop then there's no way his value will increase. We'll struggle to sell a striker for the money we paid who can't cut it in the Championship. Who knows what he'll do, but we'll never know for definite if he can cut it down here (as someone has said, not sure where their insight into him comes from though) as he's never played down here. But is it a gamble worth taking when we need some wide players? And we must be nearing our £20 million budget now anyway

imo we should have snapped him up when we had the chance, i feel we are missing out on a potentially great player. even says on the bbc this morning that man utd and arsenal have had scouts watching him in some of dundee uniteds games so far this season.

and have man utd or arsenal made any others, to them £2mil is cheap. they have clearly watching him and seen him as not good enough. the same with matthews.

when arsenal or man utd want someone they waste no time !! Ramsey, walcott, rooney. didnt take long to get them

Re: " So we are going to let Goodwillie deal go then? "

Not always the case Jez, if a player is exceptional they will make the effort and snap them up while they are young. Sometimes they will keep tabs on a player for a few years just like Michael Carrick when he went to Man United. They had the chance to buy him for 4m when West Ham went down but instead they let him go to spurs and then bought him two years later for 16m.

Personally I think spending 2m on a player that could be in jail for 6 months is not a good idea. If the case was dropped maybe but none of us know the facts

stevey boi

i know what you mean, but thats just the big teams waiting to see how they pan out, oodwillie is still raw and not ready for a prem club, thats obvious, but as you said i dont think £2mil on a hagis eating thug when he is a gamble and could go to prison is good investment when we need wingers.

my last rant was alot to do with matthews because imo he was far too overated and was only in the limelight because of ramsey and ledley being promising. oh and the one run matthews made at home beating 5 players then smashing his shot wide.

We now have the same standards as Man Utd and Arsenal?

we should aim to in some respects.

man u and arsenal could easily sign him and progess his talent like they do with many youngsters. not many are good enough to go into there first teams right away

Re: " So we are going to let Goodwillie deal go then? "

Thu Jul 28, 2011 12:13 pm

Shut up.

There is a HUGE f*cking gap in what we need and what Man Utd and Arsenal need.

Call MM now and tell him not to bring Bellers back as he won't get in the Man Utd team.

your getting quite irrate for a forum dont you think?

im not saying because united dont want him we shouldnt, all im saying is that he isnt the saviour that you and the very small minority are making out. he is young, raw, unproven, had his first breakout year, who knows if it was a fluke or not, playing at a lower level and he is a trouble maker, who is in court and in trouble.

we have 6 strikers at the club and 1 winger, i dont care what standard of striker we have right now the winger is more important and then after that i would look at center backs next.

miller is the replacement for goodwille and the matter in all honest accoutns is 99% closed. he isnt coming.

time to move on

The Echo today says the Goodwillie deal is dead, which is what I thought it would be (and posted on here) a few days ago. And it's a quote from Gethin Jenkins before anyone accuses the Echo of lazy journalism

Re: " So we are going to let Goodwillie deal go then? "

Fri Jul 29, 2011 7:25 am

Gethin is not going to say a deal is still on even if it was, this is a new era for city, say nought till all deals are out

He's said it's not happening, deal with it. If it was still happening, he wouldn't have said it wasn't, he would have said that he can't talk about other club's players. Like TG did about Bellamy, although I don't think that will happen this season, either

Re: " So we are going to let Goodwillie deal go then? "

Fri Jul 29, 2011 7:37 am

"BELLAMY IS COMING" as for goodwillie, you may have taken what I said the wrong way, as I do not have to deal with anything, as I always thought the deal was dead when it dragged on, but, did not MM when questioned about Miller, say that we are talking to him although he was with another club?

Yes, but I expect that MM knew that Miller was unhappy and would be available and there's a big difference between the two. If Miller was settled in Turkey, MM wouldn't have even contemplated approaching him. If Goodwillie didn't have a court case hanging over him, I believe that he would have been our player. But, as any good manager would do, MM had more than one player in mind and went for Miller instead of Goodwillie and I, for one, believe he made the right choice
