BUT WHEN YOU STOP the weights, :old: :ayatollah: where dose that leave you?? flabby thats where.
As a paid fitness instructor, i would say body management is evrything, press up,sit ups know how to handle youre own body weight.
Runs, circuit trg, but most of all know your own limits, and aim to bust through them.
Set targets, carry on on eating, as long as you work hard.... but if you want to lose weight, then weight training is the last thing you should be doing.

When you stop the weights muscle will disappear not turn into Fat. The reason people say that is when you stop your training generally your eating habits change as well, start eating shit not doing exercise then you get fat. I used to do the weights big time i stopped about 13 years ago as my shoulders could not take the stress anymore. The only reason i put on the weight after was because my gob is bigger than my Arse hole

Just over 10 days ago i weighed 16st 3 3/4lbs i currently weigh 15st 9lbs so i have lost nearly 8lbs in 10 days. I started by spending a week on the 'commando diet' which i saw a link to on this MSGB. I have now decided to cut right down on bread and dairy products getting used to drinking black coffee and plenty of water.

To date i have taken no exercise because i am having a lot of problems with my right knee but once i get it sorted i would hope to keep the weight off and lose a bit more ideally would like to get down to at least 15st but losing weight gets harder has you get older :old:

Body will get used to press ups after a while. Agreed own bodyweight work is your best bet, but ketterbell training and specific weight training ie deadlifts squats and lunges are essential for weight loss and still play a big part in all professional rugby and football clubs.

Thanks for all the advice off everyone - I can take a little positive from everyones posts! :ayatollah:

I have a bit of a dodgy left knee from a fall when I was younger, but as long as i do my stretches and stuff before running it usually remains ok, aches a bit if a do a couple of days on the trot, but now I try to do every other day!

every 3.5 mile run I have done has been the same route, with some decent inclines, which I have pretty much got a minute or two quicker each time I have done it. I'm aiming for 26mins, which is what I was doing it in last year, and am at 32mins at the moment. so Im always pushing a bit more each time I go out. I do press ups and situps afterwards too. Just want to burn the extra fat I'm carrying around the gut as quick as I can, the rest of my body isn't carry any excess weight....

But losing 12lbs in a fortnight is a great feeling! But you just dont physically see it coming from the gut do you!

Merlin
to lose that in 2 weeks is great going mate, many of us can offer advice, but do what you are doing can't argue with the results. Try some fat burning, hour at a slow/average pace on a bike/cross trainer ect works wonders...good luck. :ayatollah:

I started running about six years ago, to lose weight, I have run 5 marathons, but have lost very little weight. However I am 39 and I think my body has grown acustom to the daily running. I really only loose weight right before the marathons when I am running like 20 miles in a weekend.

Your body gets used to routines. The guys I train with say this all the time. Just mix things up so your body does not get used to it.

obviously the older you get the harder it is! ... but i was running 80 miles per week for 5 years up until i got injured and had to stop running at the age of 43 ... i had no problem whatsoever keeping my weight down to under 11 stone week in week out, even though im a natural 13st plus man ... the trouble is we live in a culture where we eat to many meals a day! ... we only need one main meal and 2 smaller ones! ... the average workman these days, eat breakfast, then food at 10am break, then dinner break, then tea when they get home and then supper before bed! ITS WAY TOO MUCH FOOD! ... eat and train right and the weight will fly off!

Nice....I thought I ran allot. I run about 40-45 miles a week. What was your injury?

I think metabolism, and genetics have allot to do with it as well.

it was a foot problem that just never went away and got worse and worse! ... i do run about 2 miles a day now [thats all i can do] but my racing days are well and truly over [i think!] .... you are right regarding metabolism and genetics but one of the most important factors is you`re mentality .... i think long distance running is 90% mental strength cause lets be honest the long training runs in the winter and pushing you`re body in races when you`re in pain takes a lot of it! .. and theres no hiding place either, if you dont put in the hard work then the results dont come! ... good luck with you`re running btw i`m so jealous i cant do it anymore. :ayatollah:

A good way of building your strength up if you have been out of an exercise regime for a while is swimming. I swim 3k twice a week, do circuit training once a week and gym twice a week. Been back into it since the season ended and I've cut out bread, potatoes, pasta, processed food, sugar and all the usual bad snacks like crisps, chocolate, biscuits and beer
I was 14st 6ilbs when I started and now touch the scales at 13st 6lbs, I can really notice and feel the difference.

Cutting out the above foods I mentioned and regular exercise really does work. Stick with what exercise you feel comfortable with, for me I prefer swimming as I am better and stronger at that than running long distances (running messes my knees up).

Also breakfast is very important, you need something to get your metabolism going first thing so cereal with fruit is good, it stops you snacking mid morning as well. I have a light lunch at work - usually salad with chicken or tuna and have some fruit mid afternoon. When I get home it's salmon or chicken with greens and a small portion of brown rice. I try and not eat anything between 7 and bedtime, If I do I grab some dried mango or have a banana.

All sounds very healthy - but i'm sure if you're still getting regular exercise, then the odd occasional gulity pleasure food, eg. a pizza or a take away won't hurt, as long as its limited to maybe once a week or something..... the main thing is to keep the metabolism high so you can break down what you eat faster - and increase burn. To say to someone that you MUST cut out biscuits, cake, crisps, etc etc COMPLETELY is not really true. According to alot of plans.

obviously best to stay away from them as they increase temptation, but the body still requires a certain level of sugar, salt, carbs and beleive it or not - fat! :)

pizza is quite good for runners merlin especially night before a marathon! .... and yes of course youre allowed to treat yourself! ... mine was dark chocolate which out of the two is the best for you! ... to be honest i used buy a bar of bournville and eat in the car on the way to a race just for an energy boost! good knows if it worked or not but it was bloody nice

Trouble is once you have one it leads to two or three. Nothing wrong with a chocolate bar once in a while or a slap up meal somewhere. The key is to keep it balanced. The sugar and fats are best from fruit (natural sugars - dried fruit is great) and fats from fresh chicken (don't eat the skin though).

I normally have a chinese take-away on a saturday night, instead I'll have healthy stir fry vegetables, no sauce and maybe a very small portion of noodles, but that's my treat for the week.

hi,my name's michael and i am a professional footballer. i have a problem with my weight, so much so that it affected my game towards the end of last season. i felt that i lost interest and preferred to go out on the piss than prepare for a game as a professional footballer. some fans commented that i looked a little portly especially in the play off semi-final against reading. i try to lose weight now by running to the bookies to put a bet on rather than ringing through on my account. it helps that i owe so many bookies that i don't have any accounts left so i have to physically go to the bookies like those sad people who have to work for a living. oh well. that's my tip. run to the bookies and if you win run there again to pick up your winnings. must go, the greyhound racing is on. bye !

Re: Losing weight and getting into shape!

Evening all. After seeing photos of myself in a new years party I decided enough was enough and it was time to go on a diet. I went and weighed and I was 21st 10!!!! Couldn't believe it, since I passed my driving test it gave me such a different lifestyle change. So I started dieting, porridge in the morning, chicken salad for lunch, jacket tuna etc for dinner. All good healthy stuff with a treat on a Saturday night (as I type this I am stuffed from the biggest Chinese lol), you gotta put new fat in too get rid of the old fat. I started running in march and following the c25k programme (helps you run for 30 mins through interval training), I I finished week 8 today and can now run for 28 mins non stop!! I have also been going to the gym 3-4 times a week. Anyway, enough of that today I weigh 15st 7 so that's a loss of 6st 3!! I just got back from Cardiff with all new clothes again!! And feel good as F! Cheers all, feel good just posting this lol.

Sorry forgot to say aswell that I run the Cardiff 5k in may for velindre and have signed up for the Cardiff 10k on sept 11th also for velindre. Once I finish my c25k programme I will be moving onto the b210k programme that will help me train for the 10k.

I haven't consumed alcohol for almost 2 months and that's good for me because I use to like a can or two a night after work! There's still a crate of bow in the porch and 14 cans of lager in the fridge! I have had the occasional pleasure food as a little pick say 3 or 4 times week bit in that time I've lost 12lbs! So it can't be all that bad! ;)

Re: Losing weight and getting into shape!

Sun Jul 10, 2011 4:45 pm

Yesterday, I went on the running machine for an hour, and 45 minutes of that hour was up a small incline. This enabled me to not only burn calories, but tone my abs a little at the same time. I refuse to follow any healthy eating diet plan, I choose to enjoy my life, eat and drink as much as I like and keep in shape by regularly exercising. People who try and lose weight by dieting just put it back on when they go back to their old eating habits, unless they choose to stick to dieting for the rest of their lives, which would make your life very sad and boring imo, constantly having to watch what you eat, how can you enjoy your life living that way? If you want to lose weight, get running, as this is the best way to burn calories.

Re: Losing weight and getting into shape!

Sun Jul 10, 2011 8:58 pm

5 mile run every night, 8-10 mile run over the weekend. Plenty of sit up's, press up's etc., and drastically cutting my alcohol consumption. Would totally give up on it but I am away with work for two weeks and I am provided with free food/beer so it wouldn't be sociable of me if I didn't have a beer with my other colleagues.

Currently down to 11st and waist size down to 28". Just got back into the running though, will be training for half marathon's and triathlon’s when I have more time on my hands.

For quiting smoking i managed to finally do it after going to an Allen Carr stop smoking clinic. No NRT, no drugs just undoing the brainwashing of why we think we smoke. Cost me about £220 but i gave up a 20 a day habit now for about 4 months and know that i am done with those things
