Its no coincidence that our rise up the tables occurred when Earnie was here. Over 100 goals for us. Scored hattricks in every league and cup we played in.
No doubt that Bellamy is the most talented player to play for us, but he isn't a Cardiff legend yet. He hasn't done anything for us yet. I'm pretty sure he will take us up, but he hasn't achieved anything yet!
Can't believe Hughie Ferguson hasn't got many votes either. The man scored our FA Cup winning goal and played a vital part in our success. He scored 5 goals on the way to the final. But just 2 and a half years after his most famous goal, he passed away

Pat Heard - missing but not forgotten
Thorne on the list before Chopra??????????

For me the poll should be between:
Alf Sherwood
Fred Keenor
Trevor Ford
Phil Dwyer
Robert Earnshaw
Nobody else has really come close to having the impact of the above players when they were
here. Sherwood, Keenor, Ford... three of our all time greats from back in the day. Dwyer
because he used to piss Blue blood. Earnie gets in because of all our latter day players, he
is the one who has had the biggest impact, his goals per game ratio for us was second to none.
Most of the other names on the poll arent 'all time greats' - they're just more current!!!

The greatest player ever to wear a City shirt is "God" AKA John Charles. Ask Juventus fans because "God is the nickname they gave him. Ask Leeds United Fans. I was lucky enough to see him play in a retired players match in Caerphilly a long time ago and he was awesome even then.
I found this article writtten about him says it all really.
The Welshman who was 'better than Maradona, Ronaldo and Zidane'
Serie A has been one of the biggest and best leagues in the world for some time now. It has giants of the footballing world such as AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus, and has seen some of the best footballers ever.
The likes of Diego Maradona, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Marco van Basten, Michel Platini, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and Paolo Maldini have played in Italy's top division, and they are just a handful of the great players. None of them would look out of place in a list of the top ten players ever.
Yet, in a vote to determine the greatest player ever to play in Serie A, none of these players won. Nor did Paolo Rossi, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Roberto Baggio, Dennis Bergkamp or Lothar Matthaus. All the men on this all-star list were outdone by one man from Wales - John Charles.
Between 1957 and 1962, Charles played for Juventus, and was considered the most valuable footballer of his era, in a time where Pele was starting to make headlines.
It wasn't just his skill that made him such a superstar, it was his versatility. Whether he played in defence or up-front, you knew you were in for a tough game if you were against him.
Both Denis Law and Tom Finney, great players in their own right, rated Charles as the best centre-back in Europe. He was, however, primarily a striker. Law went on to say he was also in the top three centre-forwards he had ever seen.
Charles joined Juventus for a then British record transfer fee of £65,000 in 1957. This came after he had scored 150 goals in 297 games for Leeds, a ratio better than one every other game, despite playing regularly in centre-back. In fact, he played solely at centre-back for the first couple of season as a Leeds United player.
In the 1953-54 season, the Swansea-born superstar scored a phenomenal 42 goals, proving he was equally as effective at the other end of the field.
Once he joined Juventus, he didn't take long to get settled in. Twenty-eight goals in 34 games during his first season helped Juve to win the league title, and was also enough for him to capture the golden boot.
He helped Juve to another two league titles, and two Italian Cup successes before his departure four years later. He scored 93 goals in 150 games for Juventus, and cemented himself in Italian football folklore. He is still considered a God in Turin.
After a second spell at Leeds, followed by a return to Italy with Roma, and then a spell at Cardiff City, Charles retired from football.
His versatility and quality made fans love him, but his sportsmanship made rival fans respect and admire him. Throughout his entire playing career, for club and country, Charles was never sent-off, or even given a yellow card, a feat even more amazing considering he lived in an age when strong challenges were part and parcel of the game.
Charles could certainly deal with the physical side of the game, but he always did it fairly. He never used extra leverage when jumping, yet heading was perhaps the most impressive part of his game. At 6ft 2in, he was nicknamed "The Gentle Giant."
Many people who saw him play maintain that he was one of the best all-round players ever. He was able to play at a world-class standard in different positions, comfortable with both feet. He had a great first touch, and possessed stamina and strength in abundance.
For Wales, he played 38 times, scoring 15 goals. Had he not suffered an injury during the 1958 World Cup, the whole landscape of football may have been different.
The Welsh came up against Brazil in the quarter-final, but he was unable to play. Had he been chosen in centre-back, there is a very high likelihood that he could have marked Pele out of the game. Pele eventually scored the winner, and the story of the greatest player who ever lived had begun.
Who knows, if circumstance had been different, it could have been the Welshman who was being called the greatest ever.
An underrated genius, John Charles is truly one of the greatest footballers the UK, if not the world, has ever produced

John Charles can truly be described as the Great. Probably the greatest British footballer ever.

I said Robin Friday as I just like seeing his picture with his fingers up, Another George Best in a smaller way.
Sun Oct 10, 2010 9:51 am
I put Robin Friday in my five as well. If the poll was for most talented player Robin Frday would win it hands down. He was so skilfull it was nuts but he was a wasted talent. Such a shame he could have been a great.

He was one of those players that could lift a crowd before the ball even got to his feet. As soon as the ball was passed to him you knew he was going to do something crazy and/or special. If a fotball had lips he coulda made it talk

really should have graced the Premier League or First Division as it was called back in the day.

Stant and Earnies Goal to Games % is actualy very similar.
Stant, 40 goals in 88 Appearnces over 3 Seasons
Earnie 86 Goals in 183 Appearances over 5 seaons
The difference being that Earnie bagged his goals in 2 Promotion Seasons, one season when we made the Play Offs and
a Season in the First Division. I would also argue that Earnie was blessed with class players around him, as all his goals were scored during the Sam Hammam Bank Rolled Era, when we were the team to beat of whatever division we were in.
In Comparison, Stant scored his goals, in a Promotion Year, a season where we finished 19th in the old Second Division and a season where we finished 22nd and Relegated. In those to Relagation Seasons he also scored 15 and 16 goals each season which is a good return for a team fighting relegation.
What makes Stant a legend to me is the fact that I dont think I have ever seen such a formidable player wear the shirt, the bloke was 100%, if you watched him and Jay Bothroyd now the difference is astounding. If Bothroyd has Phil Stants Heart he would be a top 4 Premier League Striker.
Phil Stant used to play with pride, he used to knock people out of the way for fun, and I was gutted when he left, add to the fact that the fella fought in the Falklands War and progressed to the SAS before coming into Football.
What a Legend, What a Player What a Guy....
I also think that Earnie does deserve a place up there and can understand that he would get a few votes. Just surprised he's winning.
I voted for
Jason Perry
Phil Stant
Andy Legg
Fred Keenor
Nathan Blake

If this poll is really to name
"The greatest 11 players to ever wear a City shirt"
Then John Charles should win hands down. He is the greatest British footballer
of all time. An absolute legend in Italy. So by default, MUST be the greatest ever
to wear a City shirt. He should take up two or three places on his own.
However. If the poll is trying to find who the 'greatest Cardiff City player' of all
time is. Then surely it is someone who has been a legend here, and a fabulous
servant of the club.
This immediately discounts Craig Bellamy (who has played three games)
and most of the other more contempory players
more clarification please

Nathan, Theres a Surprise Robert Earnshaw is leading and by quite a few, I am a big Earnie Fan, But never Voted for him.
Sun Oct 10, 2010 2:41 pm
No option for Ian Gibson.
Sun Oct 10, 2010 3:21 pm
Ive gone with Carl Dale, Andy Legg, Graham Kavanagh, Robert Earnshaw and Scott Young
Sun Oct 10, 2010 3:51 pm
what no Steve Grapes or Gary Stevens.
I saw Ronnie Moore score.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I could clone 1 player from he past who at their prime could get us promoted then it would have to be John Charles.
Not only would he keep J out of the side he could also play centre back.In fact I'd probably play him centre back and leave J up front.
Sun Oct 10, 2010 3:58 pm
I am surprised Dwyer isnt running away from it by now. A legend who could of gone on to bigger and better a true City legend only behind Keenor. Surprised Koumas isnt there after his first spell here not his present.
Sun Oct 10, 2010 6:07 pm
I voted Earnie my reason is
He scored more goals for Cardiff City
Mon Oct 11, 2010 9:59 pm
So many players it was so hard.
My hardest choice was Bellamy V Earnie and its hard to vote against earnie but I think in the end Bellamy will bring us something special in terms of promotion this season.....I went Bellamy but I did feel unsure.
Kavanagh
Keenor
Thorne - A personal fav and until Jay we lacked a player like him
Legg - biggest legend IMO
I wish Leo was on the list though, a legend in a different way
Mon Oct 11, 2010 10:49 pm
i was 3/5 in the majority. I wish gareth bale was an option..
Tue Oct 12, 2010 1:18 pm
What would be good as well is a poll of best manager !! Would it be Eddie May or Kenny Hibbett

or Dave Jones. Many managers to mention but one of them would be deserving of the wall of fame. Just an idea
Thu Oct 14, 2010 11:56 am
So as it stands
1/ Fred Keenor 67
2/ Earnie 65
3/ Kav 62
4/Craig Bellamy 60
5/ Brian Clarke 57
6/ Phil Dwyer/john Charles 46
7/ Andy Legg 41
8/ Scott Young 32
9/Phil Stant 29
10/ Jason Perry 28
That is one fantastic eleven. I wonder how many of those players that arev still alive can we get to be at an opening of those pictures in the lounge of the Ninian ?
Thu Oct 14, 2010 4:06 pm
I always rated Gary O'Neill as a far better player than Ledley & Kavanagh, suprised not to see him as an option. Maybe this should be changed to favourite player and not great player.

I saw Friday and believe me...apart from his debut, he was very average...had he cleaned up his act and stayed a bit longer..maybe...but great?.....maybe that claim could be made by Reading fans, but certainly not for City!
