The post itself would get lost amongst the 1000's per minute posted every day, by twitter standards it is pretty tame. The issue is who posted it and why that person's post gets lifted to the top of the pile.
Gary Lineker's celebrity is due to his hosting of a BBC and UK football institution, MOTD, without this, he is just another ex pro doing the media rounds. MOTD is nearly 60 years old, it's a big deal. As host, he earns the highest salary at the BBC. With that comes a leader's responsibility, he is the senior guy, the lead sports anchor; sports not news, but he is bigger than the news guys. If he doesn't want that responsibility he should consider if he is in the correct position in the right organisation, as the world is his oyster.
The BBC is in trouble, the world is changing ever quicker and it's lagging behind, there is a sizable group who do not believe you should by law subscribe to its services and it should be broken up and the charter removed. GL is more than aware of this but still wants to bring attention to himself. He is not daft, in fact, he is extremely media savvy, he should be. He knew when you insert the word "Nazi" into a comment you rachet up the attention.
The post is one of a narcissist. He doesn't care about the BBC. Its playing to the gallery, ego-driven, everybody look and talk about me.
The post is fine, free speech is paramount, its his position in a publically funded, fragile organisation that makes this wrong. Say it on Sky, prime or BT sport and its fine, but he is the very public face of the BBC, so it is wrong.
He should back himself and resign and go to another broadcaster, but he needs the oxygene of the BBC for his ego

All for freedom of speech But comparing UK government to Nazi Germany is appalling to me can’t see why more are not concerned about that comparison Having my partners grandfather shot by Nazi’s and her father put in Auschwitz as a political prisoner (He was 2 at the time )
Thou i defend his freedom to say such things

Oxygene

My inner Jean Michel Jarre resurfacing, should of course spelled "oxygen"

MOTD will be great tonight.
No self opinionated under rated ex players spouting their opinions on everything football and getting paid in the process.
About time they were all let go and the beeb save the money they give them.
Most of them are hypocrites, they spouted off about the wrongs in Qatar before and during the World Cup and were then attending state funded functions all expenses paid by the very regime they were calling over.
Behind the cameras they only care about themselves first and foremost.

He’s expressing a view, he’s not a political journalist but is entitled to his views. Worth noting he’s a freelance presenter who would earn double if he worked for Sky.
He hasn’t directly criticised the policy, merely the wording used in putting forward the case.
This is about free speech, he hasn’t promoted hate so surely the BBC and Government can see that ?
Hes broken his contract and let be honest he's sailed close to the wind for years .
He actually hasn’t. If he was a news/political journalist he would have but the freelance sports journalist contracts are very different.
Are we saying now that anyone on TV is not allowed to comment on political matters that concern them on their PERSONAL social media accounts ?
I can absolutely guarantee that if Lineker was praising how the government had dealt with this matter they would not be questioning whether he had the right to comment !!!!!!!!

What Lineker said was some of the language being used was similar to Nazi Germany.
The Tory Party has been hijacked by Asians Sunak and Braverman.
Neither of them are Christians. They weren't born here. There families sort refuge here.
Three quarters of the gang leaders live in the UK.
300 kids have gone missing from the hostels.Probably in the sex industry or working as a slave in a mansion.
Foreign women forced into being sex workers.
Asians in Leicester working in clothing sweat shops. Paying less than the minimum wage.
Crime is higher than ever. Young kids dealing drugs in every town and City.
This is Tory Britain.
They've had 13 years to sort the mess out..

Serves him right , he's so smug ,the public pay his wages,he should be impartial and don't bring politics into it ,there is an alternative match of the day on GB news at ten apparently

Linekar has been at this for years, it's always been about him , slags Qatar off and then goes out there, so much for his empty self publishing PC principles.
The others are all on the BBC and media gravy train too, that's why they've joined him, so get rid of the lot while they're at it as they're no good anyway. MOTD has long needed an overhaul too as it's dated and boring. Linekar is smug and thinks he's some sort of sage and untouchable. And his woke crank comments also show how out of touch he is with what the majority think and want.

Even if that is correct I can still assure you that this government would not be making this fuss if he was backing their policy!!!!!
Free speech is absolutely necessary for a democratic country and this government hate it !!!!!

Yes but the BBC have done plenty of things way to the left as well ,you have only got to look at how they tried to stop Brexit ,why do you think GB news started up , because the BBC were so biased to the left, he's earning million odd a year it can't be hard to just talk football, ask him a question where do we put another 50k odd immigrants this year hotels are full, immigration centres full ,they burn down army barracks because it's not a hotel, and on top of that a hotel full of immigrants can destroy a towns economy because tourism is affected because there is no where to stay ,ask him those questions and see what his answer is ,if you put them in a tent because there is no where else that would be wrong

MotD may have unwittingly fell upon a great idea here if the show turns out better with just the football and not the pundits prattling on between games.
Save a few Bob too.

This is the problem when uneducated people go off what they read on Facebook without actually having a jar of glue what they are on about.
Just as bad as the woke people who pretty much jump on the bandwagon in the same way.
Lineker was talking about the language used not the policy as such, he has housed immigrants. Rod Stewart did a fantastic thing. How can you criticise that?
f**k the population of this country saddens me sometimes. You are so hypocritical it’s beyond belief.
I don’t agree with what he said as such but he’s allowed to say it. It isn’t against his contract.

That’s exactly the point.
The government described it as “an invasion” of asylum seekers.
Lineker, correctly, pointed out that was similar to the language used prior to WWII.
I just can’t see what he’s done wrong.

I am not uneducated and not on facebook 2 facts you have got wrong
Lineker dropped a bollock with the nazis line because he was refering to suella braverman the tory woman who was bringing forward the bill her husband is jewish and therefore the children and grandparents etc as regards rod stewart it was publicity about himself i watched his interview about it he was trying to charm the female reporter and banged on about how good he was himself he has the money to do what he did
But my mother is 90 and has done charity work for children of africa for 50 years without a mention or boasts of how good she herself is
unlike these celebs .

Let's blame the refugees
for all our Problems, NHS, Crime, schools, dentist, jobs, strikes, homeless, no tomatoes. This shambolic, nasty government are just trying to divert the 5hit state this country in. At least for now they are leaving those on welfare alone
Sat Mar 11, 2023 2:43 pm
To be honest, I’d quite happily see him sacked. And if the BBC want to sack the others for withholding their services, so be it. They’ve got no contractual reason for withholding their services. For me, Lineker is self centred and smug. Very hypocritical person. Slags off Qatari Government, then hosts the World Cup there for the BBC and earns large out of it. As pointed out in another comment, he was caught up in the Paradise Papers tax avoidance scenario. All of a sudden he becomes a person of colour (and there’s me thinking it was just gender that was fluid nowadays). For me he’s a typical, holier than though, champagne socialist celeb. If he wants to use his tax payer funded status to pontificate politics, go and stand for election somewhere. Same with Neville. Rant over.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/p ... 62355.htmlWas the holocaust survivor wrong to tell Braverman to her face that her rhetoric is reminiscent of that time?

Exactly. He was specifically talking about the rhetoric being used. And when you've got Tories using language designed to dehumanise (e.g. 'invasion' and 'swarm') it's hard to disagree with him.
It's pretty blatant that the Tories are using this as a way of creating division and winning votes too mind. Feels very similar to what they did in the lead up to Brexit. (Which if I remember correctly, was also going to sort out our immigration problem and secure our borders...).

I thought it was an astonishing thing for a sports presenter to say. First - it was inaccurate since there has been a huge problem with people coming into this country legally and illegally. Second and most importantly, it is unacceptable to compare what the Tory government is doing around immigration with the policies of the National Socialist Party in Germany during the 1930s. It is unacceptable because the action of the German administration included some of the most heinous crimes against a particular race of people ever committed by a modern Western state. The Tories, however much some people may dislike them, have done nothing that can compare with that. Third, as a presenter he should be impartial regardless of any BBC rules because politics is not something that most fans want to be pushed in their faces through football. And fourth, arrogant, rich Woke idiots like 'no more Mr. Nice Guy', don't deserve to have a huge platform to peddle their ideological wares.
Sat Mar 11, 2023 6:25 pm
For me its not about the merits of the tweet, that is another debate. It's about the position he has placed his employer, who he knows is a shambles and under pressure.
Looks like he is pushing for a contract break and knew this may do it.....lots of talk about full time with BT sports
At least he didn't start with 5 centre halves like mad Mick did when he wanted out.

Linekar has also offended Jews and in particular a published Holocaust survivor, here's the story from the Jewish Chronicle. I honestly don't think this is going to end well for him by using cheap sensationalist words, he's the one who should be watching his use of 'language'.

Good lad Lineker
Anyone getting stuck into the Tories gets my support
The Tories wanted this policy to whip things up and get them votes , the chancers .
But it's split the country
The BBC is run by a chairman who gave 800 grand to the Conservative Party
The Director General of the BBC who was talking about being non political yesterday ......tried to win a council seat for the conservatives
So bollocks to the Tories and bollocks to them asking for the BBC to be neutral

He hasn't offended Jews.......he's offended some Jews......mostly right wing , conservative voting Jews
That twitter account you linked has loads of replies from Jewish people who say the truth ......this woman is saying Lineker has offended the holocaust survivors .......well she's offended by the holocaust but he hasn't brought that up
Jewish people are not represented by this woman . Some are but many see through this outrage and realise the words used by this current government are out of order and needed challenging
Well done Lineker
