Watch it, dont watch it. It's not rewriting history.

If you are going to question casting in entertainment programmes and relate them to their real life equivalents, you may as well go full on and ask if an Irishman should play Abraham Lincoln or an American play Winston Churchill.

It's just acting.

Agree to be fair. The whole point is pretending to be something your not.

Somebody should remind Hank Azaria of that fact before he virtue signals himself out of history.

hmmm.... and where does that line get drawn....
no issue with a remake of happy days with stormzy playing the fonze and Oprah playing Joanie...
but when its Roots and the slaves are white people pretending to be black people... just no...
i dont think your giving enough credit to how educational TV can be while entertaining...

Nah for once I'm with the lefties on this one mate, just doesn't really bother me if the portrayal is well-acted.

The bit that bugs me is that it is one direction (not the band but they might be in on it) and you'd never get a white person playing Mandela for example in 2021 but its OK the other way around (hence the Hank Azaria reference who quit playing Apu on the Simpsons despite being brilliant about it because he isn't Indian.)

As with anything else the best person for the job should be given the role on merit regardless of skin colour.

Not seen the show, not my bag, so can't comment on whether she is a good actress or not, but fundamentally don't have an issue with it if they are good in the role. The cynic in me thinks they cast her in the role to either appease the woke Gods or just to get some publicity - but without seeing it, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Just my opinion though and understand the point about historical figures just not that much of a biggie for me. :thumbright:

i would think exactly the same if Mandela was being played by a white person.... TV is massively educational , often without intending to be and i think should have a duty to be as accurate as possible when covering history ..
dont buy the best for the job bit tbh.... a car is better for the job than a coach and horses too...but itll be coach and horses
