JAMES COLLINS

Released by Luton Town.

In terms of his general goal scoring the forward managed to fire in ten league goals in his 42 appearances and managed 13 in all competitions. That means he scored a goal every 214 minutes this term.

Collins also managed to average 1.6 shots per game for the Hatters this season in the Championship. That does suggest that he will manage to get himself at least one or two chances in front of goal per game that he plays.

The Luton striker also had a 23% goal conversion rate with his shots (BBC Sport), and that is the exact same goal conversion rate posted by Moore this term. Therefore, if Cardiff made enough chances for him he would find the back of the net on a regular basis it seems.

Yes most of Collins football has been in the lower leagues, but last season Collins scored 10 goals in 42 Championship appearances.

The near 31 year old linkup play with his teammates was efficient enough this season, with him having averaged 0.5 key passes per game and also recorded a 69% passing accuracy. That compares well with Moore, who managed to also average 0.5 key passes per game but had just a 50.3% passing accuracy (Whoscored.com).

While Collins was also able to average 16.3 passes per match for the Hatters in the Championship and won 2.6 aerial duels per match. That suggests he can be a useful option to hold the ball up and bring his teammates into the game.

In terms of his defensive contributions, Collins was able to average 0.5 tackles and 1.2 clearances per game in the Championship for Luton. Those are similar numbers to what Moore was producing for the Bluebirds in the league this term as well.

From this analysis of Collins’ stats from this season, it is clear that he could offer a lot of extra quality to the Bluebirds’ forward options. He is a player that can link the play up well at times, but he could improve this aspect of his game having only managed two assists this term.

He seems to be able to get off a decent enough number of shots per game, but that could be increased if he is given better service into the penalty area. The forward’s goal conversion rate is not too bad and allows him to reach the ten to 15 goal mark most seasons. However, that is something that he could improve on the training ground to become an even greater threat.

James Collins will be joining Cardiff City instead of Preston

According to the Northern Echo, Luton Town striker James Collins will not be signing for Preston this summer.

Instead, Collins is heading to Championship rivals Cardiff City on a free transfer, giving ‘verbal assurance’ that he will sign this summer.

Middlesbrough held talks last week and were hopeful of signing Collins, but the 30-year-old has picked Cardiff as his next destination. :thumbright: :bluebird:

No brainier Collins picking us.

I’m pretty sure McCarthy gave him his debut for Republic of Ireland.

Mick knows him and obviously believes he can do a job for us. Welcome him in. If Moore stays it’s a clever signing.

Don’t dive into the age so much. Helguson done a splendid job for us the first time we went up at the age of 34, sometimes in the championship you need the experience players to grind out them 1-0 wins.

Football Sources: Cardiff City agree to sign Luton striker Collins after breakthrough

Wednesday 19th May 2021

Luton Town striker James Collins has agreed a deal to join Cardiff City.

The forward, has had interest from Middlesbrough and Coventry City ahead of his Hatters contract expiring next month.

But a source has told Football Insider Collins has reached an agreement to join Cardiff on a free transfer.

It will see him link up with Mick McCarthy, who gave him his debut for the Republic of Ireland in October 2019.

Luton are set for an exodus this summer after finishing 12th in the Championship.

Club captain Sonny Bradley has rejected a new contract and League One big hitters Ipswich Town are lining up a contract offer.

Meanwhile, his centre-back partner Matty Pearson is set to snub a new deal with both Huddersfield Town and Preston North End in the hunt for his signature.

Collins has played a significant role in Luton’s rise through the divisions in recent years.

He scored 19 goals in League Two when they won promotion in the 2017/18 campaign and a further 25 in the season after when they won the League One title.

This season he found the net on 10 occasions and provided three assists in 42 Championship appearances.

Cardiff City have now won the race for his signature as they look to build on McCarthy’s encouraging start to life in south Wales.

He guided the Bluebirds to eighth in the table, nine points outside the play-off places after taking over in January.

Having left it a day to reflect on this news I honestly think this would be a terrible signing, he seems to be exactly the same as what we’ve gone for in the past with Harris, effective at L1 and lower but nothing noteworthy in the Championship.

Yet another expense for a player to sit on the bench or in the U23’s for a full season whilst Keifer Moore spends all season on his own every match again.

Hopefully I’m wrong.

not sure what your getting at tbh... Harris signed KM from relegated Wigan and had scored 10 in his last season there which is the same as this guy scored who scored 10 for Luton.... the only other striker signed during Harris time in charge was Watters a few days before he got sacked....
