GOAL! Cardiff City 4-4 Charlton (Watters 65)

Goal! Watters scores again!

Kieron Evans delivers a tremenous cross into the middle of th ebox and Watters glances it into the far corner!

I did wonder whether Mick would go down to dressing room half time - maybe had a similar discussion as Warnock had with Zohore!! Maybe he’s just played himself onto the bench for tomorrow night, thanks to MMs half time words.

How we went 1-4 down, I will never know as Charlton are very very poor.

Great turnaround to get it back to 4-4.

Encouraging that Mick and TC are there, and that they went down to the dressing room at half time.

Shows they really care about what's going on with the whole club.

Excellent comeback in 2nd half to 4 4 , idowu played well on the wing as a substitute and even when down to 10 men charlton were not in the game.
Caught out on a break and desperately unlucky to lose.
Vast improvement from Watters but Brown does not look anywhere near a first team player unfortunately on todays performance.
He has not played in a while so hopefully was just lack of match practice.

I watched the second half, and he didn't during those 45 minutes.

Competed well for all his aerial duels and took both of his headed goals well.

Jack he was awful first 45 mins.

Then Big Mick had a word and second-half a different player :thumbright: :bluebird:
But we were playing League 1 Charlton.

For me the Jury is out big time.

To be fair to Watters, it was a very poor performance from city in the first half, not just him. City and watters were much better in the second half. I think he's got a long way to go if he's ever going to regularly feature with the first team but can't fault his effort today. He put a shift in, Scored two and did well in the build up of another. Might be a bit raw but could have a knack of being in the right place at the right time.

6months+ training with the first team and being in the match day squad when needed, playing in the u23s and maybe a loan to league 1 or 2 next season could be a good way to go. Hell still only be 23 after that.

U23S REPORT | Cardiff City 4 Charlton 5

CHARLTON FC:

Monday 1st March 2021

Charlton’s U23s came out on top of a hugely-entertaining and dramatic encounter at Cardiff City on Monday afternoon, taking all three points from a nine-goal thriller.

Having taken a 4-1 lead into the break thanks to Aaron Henry, Charles Clayden and Junior Quitirna’s brace, it looked as if they had thrown it away when the Bluebirds clawed their way back to 4-4 early in the second half.

But with the hosts reduced to 10 men in the final 20 minutes, it put the young Addicks back on top and Clayden secured the points in dramatic fashion by netting a 92nd-minute winner.

Charlton came close to opening the scoring on 16 minutes when Clayden could only divert a Ruben Carvalho cross wide from close range via a deflection off a Bluebirds foot.

Moments later, the Addicks would have the lead via the right foot of dead-ball specialist Henry.

The young midfielder stood over a free-kick, just outside the box, and put it low into the left-hand corner of the net, under the grasp of the hosts’ stopper.

It would not be long until the hosts would level matters, however, as Sam Bowen dispatched a firm shot past Joe Osaghae from 14 yards after Issak Davies showed good tenacity to pull the ball back for the assist.

Charlton’s reaction would be perfect, going back ahead shortly after the half-hour mark when Henry turned his hand from goalscorer to assister, providing a brilliant cross-field pass from his own half to send Clayden into the box on the right and the winger duly finished across the keeper and into the net from an angle.

The first-half goals kept coming and it got even better for the Londoners five minutes later when Samuel Oguntayo was felled in the box, leaving Quitirna to step up and dispatch his spot-kick straight down the middle.

On the stroke of half-time, Quitirna scored again to put his side in a commanding position going into the break. After a corner was only half cleared, Quitirna picked up the ball in the box, showed great feet to shimmy to his right before sticking his shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

The Bluebirds made a stronger start to the second half and reduced the deficit seven minutes after the restart. Charlton had already hacked a Cardiff opportunity off the line, but with the ball being worked back into the box, Max Watters was quickest to react at the near post, glancing in a header for 4-2.

Before the clock ticked over to the hour mark, the home side reduced the Addicks’ lead to a single goal with a cross from the left being headed home by Owen Pritchard at the back stick.

And with 65 minutes gone, Cardiff were level. Another cross into the box caused problems and Watters was on hand to glance in his second headed goal of the afternoon.

With 20 minutes left to play, the momentum swung back towards the way of the visitors when Bluebirds goalscorer Pritchard was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card following a foul on Terrell Agyemang.

The latter stages of the encounter remained tight, with few opportunities given up by either side, but in the second minute of injury-time, Charlton had the final say in dramatic fashion.

A flowing move forward so the returning substitute Jay Mingi feed Clayden into the left-hand side of the box and the wide man kept his cool to strike the killer blow, ensuring victory for the young Addicks.

Charlton U23s: Osaghae, Barton, Ness, Taylor, Oguntayo, Clayden, Henry, Agyemang (Barker 79), Carvalho (Sivi 87), Qutirna, Afrane-Kesey (Mingi 79).

Subs (not used): Beadle, Aidoo.

Goals: Henry 18, Clayden 31, 90+2, Quitirna 36 (pen), 45.

I am with you though, long way from being a first -team regular,

I caught the first half and Watters was very poor and as an earlier poster said he looked like a parks player.
That one chance in the box when his first touch was abysmal when he should have got a shot away.

In fact I’ve played alongside better myself in my amateur days.

Sounds like he improved second half but should it take a ‘word’ from Mick to gee up a 21yr old who has a golden chance to show what he’s worth at a championship club?

Good luck to him but I can’t see him breaking through this season if at all.

So you're going to write him off cos he missed one chance but not give him any credit for scoring two goals and being involved in a 3rd? The entire team was poor first half, not just him. He couldn't have done a great deal more on his own in the first half.

You said you played with better amateurs.lol. pretty harsh assessment of a pro player based on 45mins of football where he missed one opportunity. By that logic would you be saying we have signed a player with a lot of potential if you had watched the second half instead?
I dont think we will see him this season either. Buying a player from league 2 to go straight into a top end championship team was very unlikely to happen, for 200k anyway. I do think its harsh to slate him though based on one poor (half) performance in team that was playing badly overall. Wilson has had some very poor performances this season and Moore has missed some clear opportunities.

Louis boy, after watching him play for 45minutes I’ve definitely played with and against better players than him.

I’ll slate a player if he plays as badly as that but no way have I written off a 21yr old because I said he won’t break through in the next 13 games
He has time to prove himself hopefully next season but I have my doubts.

Ive ‘slated’ Wilson as well (although slated is probably the wrong word to use) as I think generally he’s been pretty average for us this season.

But written off Watters - no way did I say that so don’t let your imagination run wild.

All I was getting at is that it seems harsh to criticise him based on 45mins of football when the team was poor and as he massively improved second half. I think the best option would have been to buy him and loan him straight back to Crawley for the rest of the season to be honest. At least he would have had a full season playing proper football
