QPR’s Macauley Bonne reacts to Jonny Williams’ move from Charlton to Cardiff City

By Chris Thorpe

03/02/2021

Queens Park Rangers striker Macauley Bonne has sent a message of support to his former Charlton Athletic teammate Jonny Williams on Instagram after the latter completed his deadline day move to Cardiff City.

Bonne was previously in the same Charlton side which ultimately fell short in the Championship last season as they succumbed to relegation under Lee Bowyer.

Williams had been a semi-regular starter for the Addicks this term and netted two goals for the League One play-off contenders before departing for his native Wales yesterday to link up with Mick McCarthy.

Following the completion of the move, Bonne was quick to send this message to his former teammate:

The Bluebirds have acquired a player who is proven at Football League level and will be hopeful that he can avoid injury and hit the ground running under McCarthy, who is still very much getting his feet under the table after taking the job on from Neil Harris.

It will be intriguing to see how Williams adapts to being back at Championship level after a short time away, whilst fitting him into the existing starting eleven may prove tricky for the new Bluebirds boss who is tasked with turning the club’s fortunes around after a disastrous start to the campaign.

I dont get this statement that the club is being run Clowns. A great deal of grief has been laid at their door about decisions made about players both in and out of the club by the "Transfer Committee". What a lot of people choose to not recognise is that 99% of the time the incoming players would be the choice of the manager, the transfer committee would be there to safeguard the financial parameters in which the club is able to operate hence to endorse the manager's choice. if you think about the crazy manner in which the club burnt money previously ( CornFlake for example). I think in some cases the transfer committee has been too accepting of certain managers ( Warnock) and allowed inflated prices to be paid for players. I also think there are a lot of fans on this site who have rose-tinted glasses for Mr Warnock, he was certainly one who has been guilty of bad choices of players involving higher transfer fees ( Madine immediately comes to mind).

The present position football finds itself ( pandemic) has led to the fact that clubs have to be very frugal in signing players, those that dont will be in the brown stuff in a big way. This brings me on to the position in which we have let a striker go out with out a replacement coming back in, so this striker is 6'5" cant head, dont hold the ball up that well, only finds the back of the net on a couple of occasions during a season, and is a bench warmer, So what is the great panic about him going out. As attacking options I look through the squad and there are plenty of attacking options (Tomlin, Wilson, Moore, Watters, Harris, OJO, Murphy ( do think there are some green shoots of class coming from Murphy) available to the manager.

Please can everybody just calm down and see how it all pans out, I think we may well see a few changes in the starting 11, lets face it we have all bee shout for change so lets see what MM comes up with  :old: :ayatollah:

not full games

True

all his stats are much poorer than who we have here, my concern is Mick will play him ahead of better players..

The issue with our midfield is that they are all similar. They are disruptive players who offer little creativity. Williams definitely offers something different. As long as he isnt played instead of wilson, I wouldnt have an issue with him replacing 1 of our midfield 3....if he can stay fit. Allows us to rotate the CMs as well.

think thats my point mate...we have signed a creative player that creates less chances, scores less goals , has less assists and wins less free kicks than what you call our disruptive players....he wasnt not getting in at Charlton because he is creative... in fact Bowyer has commented a number times of his frustration at Jonnys LACK of goals , assists and creativity.. flatters to deceive and has done for 10 years...
as said above my concern is Mick will play him ahead of better players and cost us dearly.... if the boy had done any of the above well even if 5 or 6 years ago..id buy it... but he hasnt.. and on top of that he doesnt tackle or intercept often is very lightweight and generally is blowing out of his behind before the hour mark... so its swap less tackles less defensively minded ..for...also less creativity.....

If we only signed players who were doing well for their clubs we would be paying inflated fees on every transfer. Even then, just because they were doing well then doesn't mean they would do well here. Our midfield lacks pace and creativity. We have signed a creative player with pace. He might be the spark we need, he might be a total flop or he might get injured. All transfers are gambles but this is a cheap gamble. Hell cost the club what some of our undeperforming high earners earn in 2 weeks. He does well we extend his contract, he does poorly and he's released in the summer.

Let's wait until he actually kicks a ball before completely writing him off

14 games a season is hardly prolific. Is he injury prone?

‘He’s an absolute diamond of a player’ – Cardiff City seal transfer for 27-year-old: The verdict

By Sam Rourke

03/02/2021

Cardiff City completed the signing of Charlton attacking midfielder Jonny Williams on transfer deadline day.

The 27-year-old is re-united with Mick McCarthy after the pair worked together during their stints at Ipswich Town.

Williams joined the Bluebirds on a free transfer, with agreeing to take up the remainder of his contract.

Speaking about the transfer via the BBC, McCarthy was delighted: “I think it is one of the best deals of the transfer window. Especially late on, we’ve managed to get Jonny Williams in.

“I worked with him at Ipswich. He was fabulous. He brings a smile to the place. He’s very, very talented. And he’s Welsh, of course.

“He’s delighted to be here. If he can play to his ability, then he’ll rip it up.”

So, do you envisage Jonny Williams as a regular starter in that Bluebirds XI?

The team here at FLW discuss….

Jacob Potter

You have to trust McCarthy’s judgement with this one.

Williams is a player that he knows well, and has worked with before, and I think he could be a shrewd signing for the Bluebirds.

He’s a vastly experienced midfielder, and will certainly add much-needed depth to Cardiff’s midfield options moving forward.

I’m not sure he’ll be a regular starter straight away for Cardiff though, as they already have the likes of Will Vaulks and Joe Ralls available to them at this moment in time.

But with a busy schedule from now until the end of this year’s campaign, competition for places is never a bad dilemma to have for a manager, and Williams will certainly provide McCarthy with that.

Quiz: Did each of these 18 ex-Cardiff City players ever score a goal at the Cardiff City Stadium?

Chris Thorpe

If you love football, you’ll love Jonny Williams, he’s an absolute diamond of a player for Championship level.

Injuries have hampered much of his career so far but when he has played he’s always made an impact wherever he’s been and for that reason I think he’ll be a success at Cardiff.

I believe he’ll force his way into becoming a regular eventually, yes, but for now I think he’ll be limited to coming off the bench.

The Bluebirds have a great player on their hands and I’m sure he will make things tick for them from that number 10 position.

It’s hard to see Jonny Williams becoming a first team regular.

While the Wales international is clearly a talented player he’s found it tough to establish himself at Championship level in recent years.

The attacking midfielder is undoubtedly an asset who will stretch defences with his pace and direct running, but I’d expect him to be used as more of an impact sub.

He may well prove me wrong, but that’s the challenge that he faces after moving to a club who need to be pushing for promotion.
