Well, it was the British Army doing the work. He was more saddened for the local people.

See the w*nkers have sprayed out Penny Lane now.. Roman Spa in Bath next for enslaving Britons... pricks.

Bluegog..its easy to come on here preaching about how ignorant people are. What have you actually done in your life in order to gain such wisdom? Or is it something you learned in Uni?

A very one eyed narrative but not surprising. In many cases millions of people’s lives were improved, and murder was prevented. And many of these countries collapsed into civil war and starvation upon independence. You just seem unable to recognise any balanced view.
My old man spent 10 years in Africa, building schools, hospitals, roads etc. When he went back, it was all in ruins. It’s part of the same history. But it doesn’t suit you to recognise it... part of your addiction perhaps.

Cracking point mate

For every thing a white man done wrong so has a black man

How can we move on if the people now moaning about it despite the fact they werent alive don't let it go.

I bet your old man was gutted after all the years and labour he put into it.

As I said we need to learn in order to move on, obviously we haven't...

Very sad indeed Annis. In particular the Churchill one. If it wasn’t for him, the regime that would possibly have invaded Britain would not allow free speech and would have probably shot those protesters. Good news that they are going to fast track culprits through the courts though. The amount of disrespect shown by certain groups is an embarrassment.
Ps. Wonder if they’ll be pulling the pyramids down. After all, they were made by slaves.

shot for protesting … I know what you mean.. but the black population here at the end of the war was only 20k I assume most of those would have gone to the gas chambers or into slavery in German factories long before they even considered protesting.... the increase in our black population are people that came here out of choice for a better life so maybe the people protesting take it up with their parents and grandparents for bringing them here to this clearly shitty place ..

The simple fact are that these people would not have come here if Britain hadn't invaded their countries. Because of that they had commonwealth passports and could come here to settle. You reap what you sow.

To have opinions isn't always racist, but that's how the word racist has lost its meaning.

Your racist now if you give an opinion they don't like

I have not seen any racist posts, maybe it's because I'm 47 and grew up having opinions without being given a label.

Check the history, Mohamed the Muslim prophet traded in slaves, the far East Muslims treat women like 2nd class citizens where are the feminists on that one.

Women in Saudi have only been allowed to drive

So forgive if I dont think the UK is not as racist as other countries.

We have a minority and that's it for me.

People like Piers hypocritical Morgan will have blood on there hands if trouble ensues between races.

How much of history is understood if the narrative comes to an end before full story is told?

The British Empire, as did all empires throughout history has its dark, dark days.

But name one empire in history that didn't spread through colonisation, plundering resources, slavery, murder and carnage? It is not unique to the British it is something shared amongst all empires - they are by necessity born of conquest.

However, a much, much rarer event is when an empire does something so bold that it literally reshapes society across the world. The British Empire achieved this in 1807 with the abolition of the slave trade act. An act that was fundamentally against the status quo and driven by an understanding that we are all equal regardless of skin colour (although it should be noted that not all slaves were black and neither were all slave owners white).

By 1808 the Navy of the British Empire was patrolling the seas of Africa to suppress the Atlantic slave trade.

Across the next 50 years The British Empire was fundamental in establishing a number of bilateral treaties with various nations to further drive forward the abolition of slavery on the global stage.

Other perhaps than the American civil war (where 1.9M white men alongside 200K of their black compatriots marched and fought under the Union flag together to abolish slavery and create 'the land of the free'), the British Empire's actions did more than any other nation to bring about the end of slavery in the civilised world.

The British Empire born from a different world, where different perceptions of morality existed.

However, by the time of decolonisation and commonwealth, the British Empire had completely reshaped that world to resemble something much closer to what we see as morally correct today. The British Empire was an absolutely central pillar in forging the freedoms we all appreciate and take for granted today through both the abolition of slavery and the establishment of common law as a worldwide standard that underpins the concept of civil liberty.

These are two of the greatest gifts the world has ever seen and were both reliant on the British Empire for their widespread adoption across the world.

I agree the history should be known. But your version ends just a bit too abruptly in my eyes. We should tell the whole story warts and all, but we cannot overlook the positive aspects of the British Empire either.

Penny Lane signs defaced in Liverpool over slavery claims

Road signs on Penny Lane in Liverpool have been defaced over claims they are linked to slave merchant James Penny.

The markers had the word Penny blacked out and the word racist written above them on Thursday night.

The city's International Slavery Museum said it was not certain whether the street, which was immortalised in a song by The Beatles in 1967, was named after the 18th Century slave merchant.

A spokeswoman said "more research is needed" to clarify the name's origin.

City tour guide Jackie Spencer, who runs Blue Badge Tour Guides, said she was "absolutely livid".

"It's pure ignorance," she said.

"We've researched it and it has nothing to do with slavery. James Penny was a slave trader, but he had nothing to do with the Penny Lane area."

Local resident Emmett O'Neill, who has helped clean the paint from the signs, said he thought it was "an idiotic act".

"If you want something removed, there's ways and means," he said.

"Defacing Penny Lane signs isn't going to change a lot [and] it's the wrong way to go about things."

Several of the road's signs already had a large amount of graffiti on them, much of it Beatles-related, with one even bearing the signature of Sir Paul McCartney.

Are you suggesting that Saudi not letting women drive is racist,Surely if anything that's sexist?and if you understand Islam, the women basically submit to being subservient at the wedding, they see it as there duty to please their husband, and in truth,a man isn't allowed to have four wives, unless he can financially support all of them, neither is racist or slave related, well not in the eyes of some, not saying some do not treat their women badly,as the must be some.and mohammed as you say, traded in slaves? But that's just a story,as is the bible, imho both just that, stories.(not true imho ;) )

Submit or forced

Anyway mate as you can tell I'm very anti Islam,

Had to do essays on it few years for my degree and the more I researched the more I felt sorry for the women, but I won't bore you with stories.

But it's not my problem, I've been divorced twice and I don't intend marrying a Muslim man haha

I’m a bit lost with all these protests and de facing of monuments to be honest. I’m fully aware that in the USA there is a massive problem with the police and racism, but is there here? Always some of course. I have friends of all creeds and colours in Cardiff, I dont think weve hardly ever talked about racism in the city in 20 years? Cardiff’s always been a proud long standing multi cultural city no? History is history.

I have friends of all skin colours and haver never heard them say anything regarding prejudice

It happens I know but I'd like to think 99% of racists and victim players have moved on.

If anything I'm the one prejudiced and singled out for my bald head and slightly pregnant stomach haha.

With all due respect though Goats (and to be clear I 100% agree with the sentiment of your post) the truth is that there simply isn't a massive problem with police and racism in the US.

The media have been stirring this pot for a long time but the official statistics really dont bear this narrative out.

This to me make what is happening over here even worse. Not only are we rioting over something in another country that has happened but the fundamental premise beneath all of this is built on lies and empty rhetoric.
