UK 'abandons full EU Brexit border checks' - FT

The UK has abandoned plans for full border checks with the EU on 1 January amid pressures caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Financial Times reports.

Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove has accepted that businesses cannot cope with problems stemming from the outbreak and at the same time deal with post-Brexit disruption at the border, the FT says.

Instead, the government will bring in a temporary light-touch system at ports, the paper reports.

When did NZ lockdown? It was after the UK wasn’t it? 25th March? No one even thought about here until early March, it Just became very serious very fast. We should have closed our borders beginning of March that’s for sure. Particularly in light of today’s evidence showing the virus was brought back to the uk by Brits who had been to Spain, Italy and France mainly. If this hadn’t been allowed to occur, it probably would never have git here so badly.

But all of them were brits returning,I read it was around 40,000 actual brits returning,out of about 1.5m!! But it was the no checks that I cannot get my head around,just some hand gel,IF you wanted it plus the Cheltenham festival,the big football game,the stereophonics two night gig etc,all should have been cancelled like the rest had been,to think people have died because of this goverment dithering leaders!!

I don't know where you get 1.5m visitors figure from? It's nowhere near that.

I have tried to find a true figure, all I can find is it's 'in excess of 100k.'

I quoted the figure I posted,from a post I had read on here,may not be true,but that is what was posted on here.and I'm sorry if there were 53,000 brits,they should have been told to quarantine for 14 days on return,especially if coming from a "hot" country?? As posted above,it was stated that brits had brought virus back with them.not saying your figures are wrong,as I can't remember on which thread I had seen the roughly 1.5m or so being allowed entry with no checks,if I remember I will re post,stating which poster had quoted it
