And those clubs are situated in bigger cities hence the larger fan bases.
But to be fair to all those 4 clubs Tony, non of them have won much major for many many years.
They keep good support even during years of say relegation or lower division football home and away![]()
You are right AnnisI was trying to make a point (badly as it happens) that clubs in bigger cities must be bigger clubs because they have a natural fan base. I have always marvelled at how Leeds, Newcastle, Sunderland and even not so long ago Manchester City kept their supporter levels whilst playing in the lower leagues.
If that was true then Bristol Rovers would be a much bigger club than us and Millwall would be bigger than Manchester City or Liverpool.
I noticed Sunderlands crowd and thought it reflected fantastic supporters, but although they're having problems right now I don't see how anyone can say they're not a huge club.
Some clubs are the real deal, wherever they are currently playing and it breaks my heart to see clubs like Portsmouth in such trouble. Personally I'd reconvene the league according to the overall footballing credentials of the clubs

He has a point.
There of course a big club but really they just have a big fan base. The things there most famous for in the last couple of years is back to back relegations an having a nonce in there first team squad.
Massive massive clubs do not have to ask for there fans to come and replace there cheap faded seats for them.
so whats stopping them being massive is they do not have some dodgy billionaire to bankroll some new seats..?
or buy them trophies.?
had the Chelsea or Man Citys owners decided to go to the north east instead you and Baz would be now saying the same about Chelsea and Man City.
i think size of club is crowd based , ambition changes and trophies can be funded for limited periods .
Don't presume to have any insight as to what one's opinions may be as regards other clubs or speculative alternative scenarios. Personally I wouldn't consider Chelsea or Manchester City to be massive clubs...
trophies..both clubs have won quite a few.history both clubs have won these trophies over a hundred year window..ambition..both veryt ambitous...fan base,, both have a good fan base...my presumption was based on your post quoting those 4 things...eh oh move the goalposts

Sunderland with No great history of winning anything, have absolutely amazing support.
I have been there when they brought 10,000 fans to Ninian Park, only them and Sheff Wed have ever done that![]()
I also watched them play away at Tranmere and Sunderland took 12,000 fans.
I was at Roker Park about 1978 Sunderland 1 Cardiff 2 26,000 including 150 Cardiff fans![]()

Exactly and whereas other areas have seen growth in professional sporting teams and the rise of other entertainment avenues, Sunderland have not.
So to their benefit the club maintained their support while others saw theirs be able to turn to other options when the club's were not winning.
Don't get me wrong it's a fantastic achievement for Sunderland and deserves nothing but praise.
I think a few are questioning the MASSIVE club tag and suggesting there is more to obtaining that status than crowds alone, no one is questiong that they have MASSIVE support.
