Was Squires not worth a mention in goal ?
Not sure I could agree with Gary Bell in this context but we remember him well and fondly , in which spirit we've surely got to mention his partner ( in the old fashioned sense of that word), Dave Carver, and Mel Sutton.

You've got me there. Never heard of Squires. Jones and Lee were both useful in midfield but not a patch on Gibson or Allchurch. Mel Sutton I liked but not enough to pick him.

What about the legendary John Charles, scored from a free kick inside our half on his debut against Norwich?

Sorry to say King John's best days were well behind him when he came to us. Apparently we tried to sign him before he went to Juventus and then Tommy Taylor before we eventually settled for Trevor Ford who cost us £30,000 in the mid 50s. A tidy sum then

Don't you mean Ramsey? Also your original list totalled 22 - including Delaney twice :)

Just goes to show nobody's perfect. But I did mean it as a joke.

but been in the prem twice now yet only 1 prem player makes the ;list..?????????

There are 3 actually : Marshall, Tapscott and Peter King

Mel was good in the air but suffered from cartilage trouble restricting his movement on the floor. Though a great centre half for Tottenham and Wales, England was past his best when he signed for us. He did however contribute towards a promotion but only lasted one season. As for Moore, I idolised him when I first saw him play when I was a boy and on reflection maybe I should have included him

Can't argue with the list, great selection.

Re: ' For the more elderly supporter '

Most names have been mentioned from the Harris Murray era...which is the team I have fondest memories of. I remember Greg Farrell play and always thought he was very skillfull and could be in with a shout. - I have a memory of him being sent off against Palace for flooring one of them  Also a mention for Ronnie Bird (head down full speed ahead and WHACK), and Norman Dean for his Cup Winners Cup exploits).

But thinking of the top 20 I'd have to have either Etheridge or Marshall  (rather than Wilson or Fred Davies who were the Schouler era again).
Prob one of 2 others in the present squad could also have a shout as they won promotion to the Prem and some were outstanding in the Championship. :bluebird:

Ronnie Bird. Okay, :old: I was young, but he was my hero when I was ten.

Cheers. I think a few others played in the top flight but not with us namely Allchurch, Toshack,Delaney Bennett, Harris, Chopra and Anderson. I think Gibson and Ron Healy may have too. Not sure though. Maybe someone could clarify please

I can understand this. I recall him tearing down the left wing, occasionally leaving the ball behind but also scoring some cracking goals. R.i.P Ronnie

Not much wrong with that list. I would have most of those names in my top 20.

Was Young lad in 69/70 season, my first games down old Ninian park with my Dad (RIP). So too young to remember Allchurch and Tapscott, so could not personally comment but I am sure they were Brill.

I think most of your selection is spot on but in place of Allchurch and tapscott(for the above reason), I would definitely include Alston and Buchannan and Garry Bennett in place of your second Delaney slip.

As some have already stated, think it depends on Era and division and opposition.

Some not the most gifted BUT great for CCFC.

Hard for us all to compare really as we all know so many things have changed over the years (footballs, diet, fitness, money,4-4-2,etc), not a fair comparison. I think we all tend to like the players from our own experiences and memories, and so it should be.

Think you mean Peter Sayer.

"Best" is a bit vague - Phil Dwyer was a very good servant for Cardiff but not necessarily the most gifted.

a few to add to the mix....again these played in some very different divisions and at different Stages of their Careers so not necessarily the most talented.

John Lewis
Keith Pontin
John Buchannon
Steve Grapes
Kevin Bartlett
Geoff Hemmerman
Danny Gabbidon
James Collins
Alan Curtis
Nigel Vaughan

When i had the privlidge of drinking in the players bar i said to John Lewis you look a real talent and will go far he must have been 19 or so at the time. what ever happened to such a good prospect?

Got booked by Phil once which was a laugh!!

Those were the days!!

Tony Evans could score a goal for sure but a man with an attitude thought he was to good for us.

Possibly in a boxing day game ended nil nil if im not mistaken

I'll never forget the goal he scored when he fell over in the box got back up and put it in the top corner.
I think it was against Ipswich.
I think it was the same year when we beat Rotherham 6-1 and Koumas run them all over the place.

Gary Bennett and Ian Rodgerson,Mark Delaney. Paul Ramsey. Robbie James was excellent.

I think Arter and Camarasa are the best midfielders I’ve seen. Murphy looks excellent as well.

Hallworth was a better keeper than he has credit for, tho Ron Healy was my fav.

Brian Harris very under-rated

How about John Charles!! Must be the most famous player to have played for the City

Two from me that I don't think anyone mentioned...……….Ronnie Bird and Mike England (great player who made a huge contribution to promotion but perhaps fails on games played and fact he was past his best)

One of my favourites as a young lad in the early 80's, Gordon Owen. Won't be in many top 20's, but he'd be in mine
