Vincent Tan

"I have been here nine years. It was back in 2009 that I first put money in," says Tan, who estimates the current figure from his own pocket into the football club stands at around £190million.

"I must admit I made a mistake early on changing the colour, but I removed the mistake. There will be no more tinkering with the colours.

"I feel the club is united again, everybody is pulling in the same direction. The Board, the team, the fans, the media. We need everyone to be positive because there is lots to be positive about.

"I can understand how the fans feel. But I reverted back to blue. I want to say thank-you very much to them for continuing to support the club.

"There are good positive feelings and you need that to be successful. Together, hopefully, we can make this club bigger, stronger, better, greater."

The Bluebirds, Tan emphasises, plan to have their own identity for a crack at the Premier League. 'It will be Cardiff Way," he says.

But Tan is also looking to mirror what clubs like Burnley and Leicester have managed to achieve, punching above their weight against the money-laden big guns.

"We want to follow the Burnley formula and I do think Neil can achieve that with Cardiff. Their methods and what they have managed under Sean Dyche makes football and business sense," said Tan.

"We are nowhere near other clubs and their billionaire owners who spend so much on players and wages, not even in the Championship.

"We can never be like the two Manchester clubs, or Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or Spurs. We can't be paying silly amounts of money to buy players, we need to be sensible about it.

"This is sport and it shouldn't just be about throwing big bucks around the whole time. I look at some of the numbers and can't believe them. How can we afford that? We just can't.

"But if you do it sensibly and correctly there are bargains out there. How much did Leicester City pay for Jamie Vardy? A couple of million. They got Riyad Mahrez for £200,000.

Tan wants Cardiff to unearth a Jamie Vardy

"You can do it without paying the daft money. We just need to scout these type of players ourselves and get them in, which I'm confident Neil will do.

"Look at what Leicester have achieved. So too Crystal Palace, another club who have gone up, stayed there and not spent silly money.

"I'm hearing the Premier League top six want to change things so they end up with even more money. That would be terrible for football.

"One of the great things about the Premier League is that three teams are promoted from the Championship every season, which helps freshen it up. You keep getting change.

"They deserve their fair share of the money so they can be properly competitive. In fact, I think TV money should be more evenly shared out so it filters right down through the divisions. That would be much fairer for football as a whole."

Tan appears to have a special rapport with manager Warnock, who has just delivered a record-breaking eighth promotion.

"The feeling of going up into the Premier League is amazing, this second time around is better than the first one," says Cardiff's owner.

"It's working very well with Neil. So I owe thanks to our chairman Mehmet Dalman for bring Neil to us. He'd had seven promotions, Mehmet told me. He should be able to do the eighth then, I responded!

"He has, and he's done it without spending lot of money. Neil brought in players like Sol Bamba and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who have done a great job for us. Callum Paterson is another and has scored 10 goals.

"Sean Morrison was here already, but look at the way he's developed under Neil. I just call him Captain Marvel.

"Neil talks to me more than any other manager we've had here. There are times when we agree to disagree on certain things, but we do so in a very cordial manner.

"Most of the time, though, I agree with Neil's proposal and suggestions. Like me he wants to improve the whole aspect of the football club, the first team, the scouting set-up, the youth side, the training facilities. This is what we each want.

"I knew he would succeed. He wanted that eighth promotion and to build on it, doesn't want to do anything that taints the Neil Warnock brand, if you see what I mean."

Given he has invested almost £200m of his own personal fortune into the Bluebirds, you could forgive Tan for perhaps wanting to recoup a large chunk of that with the sudden TV deal windfall the club will get.

On the very morning of Cardiff's promotion, one newspaper report suggested he was ready to sell the club.

But Tan is dismissive of that, insisting it is business as usual.
"You can't just take money back once you reach the Premier League because that way you wouldn't be competitive. We need to work at this, strengthen the squad in a sensible way," explained Tan.

"I own many businesses and I always say everything is for sale at the right price. If somebody offered me stupid money like £500m, then of course I'd listen. That was the case before and it is the case today. Nothing has changed.

"But I want to work with Neil, Mehmet and our excellent chief executive Ken Choo to make Cardiff City a success in the Premier League.

"That means staying up there this time. As I say, I've been here nine years and I can only do it part-time. Mehmet and Ken do a great job with Neil on a day to day basis.

"We are developing and progressing, get on very well as a team and will continue on that path.

"We can't be spending silly money that makes it very difficult for the owner. But we will spend reasonably and wisely.

"We can grow this club even more from here on in. Bigger, stronger and greater."

I agree quite a lot had an issue with this, I was one of them, a big problem with it, 4 years ago, yes 4 bloody years ago. Past is past.

Do people think Tan is actively avoiding the word "sorry" or does he think what he say constitues an apology?

If the word is just an innocent omission from his statement perhaps someone can have a word with him about his next interview.

It may just bring a bit MORE closure for a few.

If ever you want to see an example of how the rebrand is more about the person than the club, read The Lone Gunman's posts  BTW he seems to have finally found a girlfriend (or a partner of some kind) ;)

He thrived on the attention he got during and after the rebrand and just bores the arse off people now with his ongoing personal martyrdom guff. He used to prophetically warn 'you'll get the club you deserve' or some faff and in a way he was eventually right despite his chilling prophecy. And to call yourself The Lone Gunman is a bit pretencious in the first place. He's seems to like cutting his nose off to spite his face and needs to move on like most of us have and enjoy the club again. And he keeps pet spiders. Yep. Spiders.

I missed our Prem League season as I was not interested in watching Cardiff playing in red. I was annoyed that years of history was being destroyed by someone who probably had never heard of Cardiff until a business opportunity came along.
As disappointed as I was, that was then and this is now. He appears to be doing all the right things, and we seem a united club playing in the correct colours, with everyone pulling in the same direction.
It sometimes takes more guts to apologies than to just ignore the problem. I don't have any issues with him any more, and I will just support the club which is moving in the right direction as I have done for 50 years (apart from when we were in red). Probably time to look to the future rather than dwell on the past.

Saying he made mistake is admitting he was wrong and that should be sufficient not be splitting hairs about what words mean? And point was made about debt well due to ffp he is not able to write check for £150m to pay it off plus a plan is in place to do it within the rules! Which I'm sure they already know, I'm glad such people not on this board or we will have several roathies at same time! !! :o

He’s making valid points about your personal grudge about the rebrand. The bit about having a partner was in response to you saying about your personal life changing. Didn’t warrant the response it got. I maintain that is beneath you.

Couldn't agree more, Tan has done good things and bad things, in my opinion the good things far outweigh the bad, Christ do you remember the chairmen we had in the 80s, Kumar bros etc, they didn't have a pot to piss in, very doubtful we would have afforded Warnock without Tans money and god knows where we would be now as a result.

You believe they are valid points. I believe he's talking nonsense. However, I'm happy to debate the issues with anyone.

What I object to is personal attacks for no apparent reason, but I've grown used to them over the years. Tony's been at it for a long, long time. I'm surprised he doesn't remember my girlfriend, though. I've been with her for ages. She was on the board of the Supporters' Trust way back when Tony failed to get himself elected to it.

As for the other points. You made your stand and I respect you for that. However now we are back in blue I can’t see why you still have such a vendetta against Tan. However it’s your right to have that.

Nothing could have saved the Supporters' Trust. City's fanbase just isn't interested in proper representation.

I don't have a vendetta against Tan, for gawd's sake. I just can't stand him. Is that OK or must everyone love him now?
