The Bluebirds have already failed in two bids for the 27-year-old but are set to return with an improved bid and are confident of landing the frontman.
Madine has scored ten times for the Trotters this season and Wanderers chairman Ken Anderson has said that only an 'exceptional' offer would see him leaving the club.
Cardiff are thought to be upping their highest bid of £1.5million with bonuses for the striker who is under contract under 2019.
The Sun report that Bolton are lining up a move for Feyenoord striker Michiel Kramer as they aim to replace Madine ahead of Friday's night clash with Bristol City.

If we sign him wonder if that will put to bed the Grabban rumour?

I can't see us signing both, but Warnock says he has a few £mill to spend on transfers and wages, so you never know?
