people really do think we are bigger than we really are. Also all this positivity that is born from NW, the stronger squad and the club going inn the right direction does NOT transcend the hardcore fans. It does not register with the general public where the extra fans will come from. they sit up and take not after results are good.

Totally agree we may have lost a few hundred at the time of the rebrand but it was nowhere near the thousands some people would have us believe.

During the promotion and the Premier League seasons our attendances were very healthy. It was relegation and the failure to mount a credible promotion challenge which was the real reason for the fall off in attendances.

Many will claim the rebrand is why they no longer go but in most cases that doesn't hold water as their principles didn't kick in until 2 years after the change to red.

But what is a 'hard core fan?'

Is it a season ticket holder who attends every game and also goes to at least half the away games? Or is it Premier seat holders as they pay more to watch City?

Also I know season ticket holders who miss 6/7 games a season do they count as 'hard core?'

Personally I think it is a pointless label same as glory hunter. CCFC will be a big club if they return to the PL because we will sell out every week God knows where these extra fans come from but they will appear just like they did before if we go up.

As it is the holiday season i dont expect a big crowd for the Villa game, even if they bring 4000 plus.
Anything over 20000 will be great for the first game, hoping for more but we are not a BIG CLUB as some of you think.
The BIG crowds will only return if we are near top of the league as it has always been this way.

I was one of the fans who walked away when City went red. I had a season ticket for 20 years plus, and went to about 18 away games every season. The rebrand broke myself and although I went to the Newcastle game in the PL I hated it and knew it wasn't my club anymore.

I did attend the Birmingham home game this season as tickets were cheap and I decided to give it a try, but it was an awful game and I thought I had lost my passion for the club. But now I think I will watch the Portsmouth game and I'm even thinking about getting a season ticket as it feels like a club again even though I've not attended games.

The fans will come back if City are pushing the top 6 as NW is the best manager we have had in such a long time and we can relate to him, I just wish he was 10 years younger :ayatollah:

Plenty of families on holiday who won't be going, no schools open to dish out loads of freebies to.

I wish I could be more optimistic but I think I'm being a tad hopeful with my own prediction

Wolves played Boro last Sat, nearly 30,000 (incl 2,500 Boro) surely the same applied to them?

we are where we are.
mid table last season without ever looking like challenging. havent exactly splashed the cash. and beaten one of the bookies favs to go down.
although a lot of the regulars are quite enthusiastic ,
i dont see anything there to get those who are less committed at the moment out in serious numbers.
as for Wolves, if both clubs go up ,our club will be the better suported next season .

For many years us and Wolves were very similar.

But why different over family holidays ?

Why are we the only club that makes excuses about our support? It's either the weather / ticket prices / manager / owner / identity / restrictions etc etc why us all the time

23-24,000 I think, the Club still have a long way to go in their marketing though to promote games such as this, they could have also put an offer out to get a big crowd in

the offer was sort of there with this new flexi ticket £16.50 a game provided you commit to any 6 games. only they havent quite got it right as regards having to swap vouchers for tickets.

Wolves and Middlesbrough are based in 2 of the largest population conurbations in the country - we're not. Predicting what the attendance will be and what you want it to be (or think it should be) are totally different things

How do we know nobody else makes excuses or moans about their attendances?
Like I say, two completely different clubs.

interesting ...most of those that posted early on this thread seem to be the more optimistic, with it settling down between 20k and 24k as the thread goes on.
23,163 was our best last season...22,776 our second best.id be happy with either of those figures for a start with hopefully better to come .

Must be more fans complain about the following at other clubs but in our case it's the fans who complain that not enough go to matches ! If fans want to go they wIll and success will help that process as previous seasons have shown, as for Bradford ect ect they sell ST at incredibly low prices which at championship level is unsustainable in long term! Our attendances are what they are no amount of complaining by fans will change that only success or rock bottom ticket prices will chang it.

I think that us city fans believe we are a much bigger club than we actually are . We also have to take into account a few other issues that other teams really don't have . We are one of the few cities that has to do compete with another major sport in rugby Also we have major Saturday football leagues which takes away a lot of fans . Many other cities have Sunday leagues for youth and adults I really think a big crowd for us is around the 27,000 if we are doing really well
Because of these factors

I think a hard core fan is a mixture of all what you outline but also one who whenever there is a discussion on football will say they support Cardiff City and are not afraid to say it.

They always listen or watch for the result where ever they are and make a point of doing it and wear the colours in whatever way they want.

They always feel a pride and well up when City do well and it's been a long painful wait throughout the years !

It's not about how many seasons you've attended or how many games you've attended it's an inbuilt pride for wanting the club to do well.

It's not something you can buy with money, hard core is unflinching desire to follow the Club in what ever capacity you can.

Don't think wolves and boro being part of large conurbations has much to with it, for i.e. Wolves have serious competition from Birmingham, villa, West Brom and stoke. M'boro isn't a very big place and anywhere north supports the big two. We on the other hand have a huge area with no rival support, you can't really count Newport, a sad fact that over 90% of the population of Cardiff never go, never mind the valleys, vale and beyond. It's a shame because it's a thriving growing city at the moment and a well run successful club could link in with that, never does though.....I reckon 26875.

Wolves are surrounded by many other football clubs and has no where near the pulling power Cardiff City has.
Boro, very poor, unemployed area and never been a well supported club, with Premier Clubs always near by.

We have hardly any competition and have a million people with in 30 miles and no other football club to compete with.

Of course predicting and wanting something is totally different :thumbright:

As a kid following City in the 70's I always believed and wanted City to be as big as Liverpool and Leeds United.
Liverpool have Everton to compete with and Leeds have Leeds rugby union and Leeds Rhinos(if thats what they are called now) to compete with, but I agree we don't even compare with their supports and prob never will do,that takes many many years of top tier success.

Every Town/City has kids football leagues in the UK :thumbright:

But we should be on par at least with clubs like Wolves,Brum,Boro,Bradford,Pompey etc :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:
