10 sentenced after fight follows Chelsea-Cardiff game

Stamford Bridge
Police categorised the game as C-plus - the highest category for potential violence

Ten Cardiff City supporters have been sentenced for their part in a violent clash following a match against Chelsea.

A large-scale fight took place near Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground after the FA Cup game on 13 February 2010.

A London court heard the men were arrested following a joint operation between the Metropolitan and South Wales Police forces.

The 10 are the first of a total of 95 suspects to be sentenced.

They received sentences ranging from community service to 16 months in prison for offences from violent disorder to affray and threatening behaviour.

All pleaded guilty after being caught on council CCTV cameras or via images filmed by intelligence officers.

On Thursday, West London's Isleworth Crown Court heard how police had categorised the game as C-plus - the highest category for potential violence.

The operation was codenamed Operation Turnhill and saw officers from both forces going undercover to spot known troublemakers.

The court heard the FA Cup fifth round match, which Chelsea won 4-1, had kicked off early at 1200 GMT.

It was the first time the teams had faced each other in 18 years and saw 6,000 Cardiff City fans head to London.

Prosecutor Howard Tobias said: "The reputation of the fans and the two clubs alerted police to the high probability of spontaneous and pre-planned disorder. It was believed violence would occur."

The court was told how a young mother with her nine-month-old baby and a seven-months pregnant woman in their cars were caught up in the clashes on the Kings Road after the match.

The pregnant woman told police she feared for the life of her unborn child and her own and was forced to speed away.

One officer suffered a broken jaw in the clash.

Lots of bloody noses on those older Chelsea fans that day too.......

Lots going to jail for not much you say.... but someone else describes how they "went through"the police :?

ah,so one bunch of blokes running through the cops to fight makes another group just jumping around fair game for prison sentences ?

I was there that day and to answer the op I think given the right draw and the allocation we could on a one off basis take that sort of number again. I remember when we took thousands to Brentford on a Bank Holiday with thousands of City fans including myself locked out of the ground.

I think if we are challenging next season and if Warnock is backed I believe we will be then I see our away support increasing considerably :bluescarf:

Different events on the day, the ones who got sent to prison did very little compared to what went on in other incidents. They were just unlucky that theirs was all caught on CCTV.

I know one lad who went to prison for over a year just for throwing a traffic cone that was going back and forth.

The ones sent down basically carried the can for the events of the whole day.

so he was just throwing the cone to his mate?

dont get me wrong im sure the punishments were heavier than the crimes in some cases, but people want to act with mob mentality then complain when they get arrested

From what I remember of the discussions at the time the lad in question was caught up in a perfect storm of circumstances.

I think he doesn't deny throwing the traffic cone at Chelsea supporters (they may well have thrown it at him in the first place) but because he was in a group which numbered more than 5 (I think it was) then it was classed as affray. Sentencing guidelines for such behaviour meant he had to go Jail. I think he did around 3/4 months and was released early for good behaviour but obviously it had a massive impact on his life (loss of employment etc.)

Mind you there was a bigger question over just why the Police allowed Chelsea and Cardiff supporters to be in such a close proximity and allow such clashes to happen in the first place. Some think it was deliberate and allowed banning orders to be issued priory to the World Cup later that year.

Correct, they were the only ones caught on cctv, and paid a very heavy price.
