' MAROUANE CHAMAKH / KIERAN RICHARDSON ? '
" WILL MAROUANE CHAMAKH & OR KIERAN RICHARDSON START TONIGHT? "
By Phil Smith
Wednesday 19th October 2016
' The case for Marouane Chamakh '
Chamakh would undeniably add a new dimension to the Bluebirds attack. Since his deadline day arrival, Cardiff have been entirely reliant on former England striker Rickie Lambert to lead the line. Lambert has played in all seven matches since his move from West Brom, and at the age of 34 he has already been let down by his body once this season - limping off after 13 minutes in the 2-0 defeat to Derby. With a match away to Nottingham Forest just three days after the Sheffield Wednesday game, now may not be a bad time to give the striker a rest.
Warnock is short of other options in an attacking area, and said when he signed Chamakh: "He works hard and he's a team player. He can play up front or in the hole, he's got a good brain."
Chamakh would provide Cardiff with a striker who could run beyond the defensive line and latch onto through balls, as opposed to the target man role performed by Lambert. The Moroccan's goal scoring record may not be prolific - 100 goals in 438 appearances - but Warnock has worked with Chamakh before and obviously liked what he saw. With him only signing on a very short term deal until January, Chamakh will need to be given a chance sooner rather than later.
' The case for Kieran Richardson '
As he has grown older, Richardson's greatest asset has become his versatility. Able to play in the centre or on the left of midfield as well as left back, the eight-cap England international is a useful squad member for the Bluebirds.
As well as his versatility, Richardson brings a wealth of Premier League experience. Against Bristol City Joe Bennett made his debut at left back after a two-month injury lay off, while another debutant, Junior Hoilett, started on the left wing. There is a case for replacing either man with Richardson on Wednesday night.
Hoilett showed some exciting flashes of what he could bring, notably some sublime first touches and a sharp turn of pace. But he looked a little rusty and was blowing hard by the time he was taken off just after the 70 minute mark. Bennett meanwhile was steady but there were some question marks about his culpability in Bristol's only goal.
Richardson would be a very dependable option in either position, and as the season wears on his experience will come to the fore. He is unlikely to let Cardiff down.

Interesting to see how many get through the door tonight.
It definitely feels a bit quieter at the moment but you’d think many will have been encouraged to come back after the derby win.
Already the Wednesday away end looking good Great effort on a Wednesday night, that’s a beast of a journey

Warnock's programme notes
He’s in good form talking about the Owls
Tonight’s game has a different feel to it, but it’s like another derby for me personally in many ways having managed at Sheffield United for many years! We know what a different and difficult task it will be, but I’d like to welcome Carlos Carvalhal, his staff and players to South Wales.
Wednesday are a really good club and I like Carlos; he’s one of the unsung heroes in management who just gets on with the job.
I won’t be wishing him too much luck tonight of course, but I do wish him a safe journey home and feel that Wednesday, under him, will be right up there again this season.

Well, there’s a few nuggets of good news in those teams for Cardiff.
In Bannan, Forestieri and Fletcher, the Owls are missing the spine of their best XI.
Still a very good team, mind.
No surprise Warnock names the same team, really, the gameplan will be very similar to the Bristol City game and this XI carried it out almost to perfection.
Fitness was only ever going to be the thing that forced his hand.

Teams are out
Cardiff can go 6 points off the play-offs with a win
Wed Oct 19, 2016 6:56 pm
One nil City Whitts
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:00 pm
Well that was fast
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:09 pm
Hoilett down...
Took a bit of a bang but is back to his feet and moving fine.
Both teams come over for a drink.
Very little tempo or bite in this one. Suits Cardiff while the scoreline is like this...
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:10 pm
All quiet...
Which is exactly how Cardiff want it.
An early goal like that... absolutely perfect for them.
Suspect they’ll look to take all the tempo out of the game now. Clever one-two almost gets the Owls in but Bamba is on hand to boot it away.

Ooops....
A long throw comes back out to Gunnarsson.
He drives into the box then takes probably the worst shot I’ve ever seen.
Miles wide.
He’s started really, really well again though.
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:17 pm
Gunnarsson darts into the box but shoots way off target at the near post.. Westwood is currently down receiving treatment
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:18 pm
Lambert swivels in the box and fires over the bar at Westwood's near post
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:19 pm
32: Owls sub:
⬅️ Westwood
➡️ Dawson
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:21 pm
Strange game, this...
Cardiff, understandably, very happy with it. They’re taking every chance to throw bodies into the box when they get set-pieces.
Wednesday, an excellent team, are offering nothing.
Now Kieren Westwood is subbed off to be replaced by Cameron Dawson. Must be an injury, he was taking so long over his goal kicks.
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:23 pm
Smart save...
That routine nearly pays off for Sheff Weds.
Gary Hooper hooks a shot from a corner and Amos does well. Expect him to save that but did well to gather cleanly at the first time of asking.
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:24 pm
35: CHANCE! Jones plays the corner short for Reach, who finds Hooper in the box but Amos saves the strike #swfcLIVE
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:27 pm
Morrison in the book
Wednesday finally break the Cardiff line as Lee dances through.
Morrison has to foul before he gets into the box.
Same range as Whitts’ free-kick, this one.
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:28 pm
Great skill by Lee, who goes past three challenges before winning a free kick on the edge of the box
Well, well, well, well over.
Surprised Ross Wallace didn’t take that on his left foot.
It was a woeful effort from Abdi.
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:29 pm
40: Abdi hits the free kick over the bar
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:31 pm
Nearing half-time, City played well
Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:33 pm
I expect Neil to get the boys well prepped for the second half onslaught Wednesday will throw at us, what a massive 6 pointer this really is.
Back to back wins would be a dream
