Why not? The Slade route worked well for us.
Everyone seems against this appointment. Johnson previously took Yeovil from the Conference to League 1 (winning the FA Trophy along the way), got Bristol City into the top 6 of the Championship, then later went back to Yeovil to take them into the Championship.
He also won the Conference title with Cheltenham to take them back into the football league first time of asking. Gary Johnson is a good, experienced manager who has a track.record of overachieving and improving clubs. Yes, he's had a couple of relegation, but those relegations were either when he took over those clubs towards the end of the season and didn't have time to save them (Cheltenham, but he made them bounce back straight away), or Yeovil, where a club that size had no choice but to cash in on their best players.
We could do a lot worse than Gary Johnson and he would be a decent appointment. Warnock would be my top choice, but I wouldn't be disappointed with Johnson at all.

Depends how ambitious the club really are. One thing he will never do, and that is take us to the top table.

Cardiff City are in talks with the former Bristol City manager Gary Johnson, currently manager of League 2 Cheltenham Town.
Only a small compensation would be potentially payable to Cheltenham.
It is thought Cardiff City have offered Johnson a contract initially till the end of the season and if he keeps them up an extended contract with a bonus if relegation is avoided.
Gary Johnson is thinking the offer over.
City have also said to have contacted Neil Warnock's agent hoping he will talk to them as he would been their first priority if he is willing to talk to them.
The bookies have put Neil Warnock as 1/10 favourite for the Cardiff City job.

Is it a conditional contract?
Conditional on us not being able to get anyone better?
