I'm guessing it's party down to the airlines that are based at the airport and partly down to the apparently highest Landing Fees in the UK

This is supposed to be a myth or so they say at the airport.

Luke, I did some homework and you may be right...

From http://www.therichest.com/luxury/most-e ... our-plane/

"Bristol Airport was built on the site of a former Royal Air Force field and used to be known as Bristol International Airport. In 2013, it was the ninth busiest airport in the United Kingdom, handling over 6.1 million passengers. It serves as a hub for EasyJet, Ryanair and BMI Regional Airlines. Until 2010, aircraft had to park on the apron and passengers either walked or were carried by bus to their flights. In May of 2010 a walkway on the west side of the terminal building was built connecting it to eight new pre-boarding zones, reducing the need for buses. Obviously not the most modern airport and yet to land here in a 767-400 it will cost the equivalent of $4,400 USD making it number six on our list."

I know this is only in reference to one particular aircraft (767-400) and I also note that there is an article stating that Cardiff Wales Airport reduced their landing fees post-WAG takeover (although it chiefly refers to smaller light aircraft) but maybe the poster above who referred to 'package versus flight only' business has made the best point to date?

There was a time (don't know if this is still the case), that because of the length of the runway at Bristol, in order to be able to fly direct to USA thay had to remove seats from aircraft so as to keep within weight allowance to be able to get off the ground using a shorter runway than was available at Cardiff. It was still more cost efficient depite accomodating less passengers, because using Cardiff with a completely full aircraft was still more expensive due to the fees imposed by Cardiff airport.

I've flown to Orlando from Cardiff in the past, but not sure about nowadays

I do know that the original runway was extended to take 747 Jumbo Jets for the BA Maintenance project

That's the annoying thing. Cardiff's runway can accomodate virtually any aircraft, but airlines would rather remove seats and fly with less passengers from Bristol rather than fly from Cardiff without any modifications having to be done, and being able to carry extra passengers. Apparently, fees at Cardiff mean the airlines will continue flying from Bristol holding fewer passengers but still generate better profits. As far as I know there is now just one flight per year from Cardiff direct to Florida.

United Airlines wanted to fly direct but wag wouldn't subsidise the route to tune of 1m for 5 yrs! Yet can subsidise Anglesey to tune of 1.2 m anually nuts!!!!
