SOUTH WALES ECHO

The day Vincent Tan called a meeting with Cardiff City's defenders and demanded they shoot from the halfway line

Former Bluebird Danny Gabbidon has revealed Tan told his defenders to gamble from long range in an attempt to recreate Mark Hudson's wonder goal

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan

Former Cardiff City defender Danny Gabbidon has revealed Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan once insisted the club's defenders shoot from the halfway line.

Gabbidon, who was a club legend in his spell in the Welsh capital between 2000 and 2005 before returning for a short stint last season that also saw him take temporary charge of the team, has opened up on his final few months with the club.

And he has now revealed Tan urged his men to shoot from long range in a bid to emulate Mark Hudson's spectacular effort against Derby in 2012.

Video: Gabbidon on Tan's remarkable instructions

“We hadn’t been scoring too many goals at the time so I think Vincent Tan must have been doing a bit of analysis,” Gabbidon told Sky Sports programme Fantasy Football Club.

“He called all the defenders in for a meeting before training one day and showed a clip of one of the ex-Cardiff defenders scoring a goal from the halfway line.

“So he was kind of demanding our defenders try it on Saturday in the game to see if they could score.”

Hudson's remarkable strike for Cardiff back in 2012 – where he scored from well inside his own half – went down in Bluebirds folklore as the popular captain went on to lead the club to promotion to the Premier League the following season.

And with Cardiff not scoring many goals at the club, Gabbidon has told of how Tan wanted some of his players to try to repeat the centre-back's sensational effort.

Gabbidon added: “We were going through a bit of a barren spell with scoring goals and the defenders hadn’t really scored too many, so I think he must have seen this goal somewhere and thought it was possible again.

“He demanded from the manager that all the defenders got in and had a meeting.

“He showed everyone that goal and was telling them to do it on Saturday.”

getting that groundhog day feeling, didnt this all come about last year? and the truth of it was something like: VT was talking about Hudsons goal and joked "maybe marshal should start going for goal" or words to that affect. Of course the headline became TAN FURIOUS AS GOALKEEPER ISNT SCORING ENOUGH. why do i get the feeling this is a similar story?

im sure someone from the Inner Circle will correct me though

"He told us to shoot from halfway!" Danny Gabbidon discusses Cardiff tactics meeting with Vincent Tan

TUESDAY 26 JAN 2016

BY WILL MAGEE
In other words, Vincent Tan is the most optimistic man alive...

If you've spent any time at all watching Championship football, you'll know that the quality of the finishing varies quite spectacularly.

While most players in the Premier League are bestowed with the ability to score simple chances, the same cannot be said of the second tier of English football. There are some pretty haphazard strikers playing at that level, let alone defenders.

With the finishing ability of the average Championship defender in mind, listen to this anecdote from Danny Gabbidon - and prepare to laugh yourself hoarse.

Though he's now playing for Welsh side Panteg AFC, Gabbidon spent last season at Cardiff City working under Vincent Tan . The Malaysian businessman has come up with some fairly outlandish ideas in his time with The Bluebirds.

None more so than his idea for Gabbidon and his fellow defenders to score more goals from the halfway line.

2013Vincent TanThe most optimistic man ever to have lived?
Most Championship defenders would struggle to score from fifteen yards, let alone fifty. Considering the improbability of a centre-back hitting the ball with the technique, finesse and sheer good fortune required to score from halfway, encouraging constant distance shooting seems like an incredibly inefficient way to increase your overall strike tally.

That was Vincent's answer to the side's problems, nonetheless.

According to Gabbidon, Tan took inspiration from a one-off, long-range goal ahead of a tactics meeting with his defenders. The Cardiff owner then told them to recreate it as often as possible - ignoring the obvious unlikelihood of Gabbidon and co. ever reproducing anything like it.

Because we have all heard it before even if others outside the club like to keep dragging it up -let others try to undermine the club - supporters should be behind the club not against it
I'm no Tan supporter (but i can acknowledge that he is not all bad) and really can't understand why so many so called supporters on this forum seem to delight in bringing up the same all crap time and time again.

With Tan being part of our ridiculous transfer committee and having the final say, Slade has no hope.

"Quote" get Marshall to kick ball as far as he can you never know he might score! Could been windy day? Thats the Original quote sounds a suggestion rather than an order? Wonder how many so called quotes will be misquoted?
