Ha ha! A corner is an "assist" :laughing5: :laughing5: :laughing5: You can take medication for it nowadays you kadvantage! You'll be telling me next there's a man in the moon. However, I noticed you carefully failed to comment on your hero's pathetic non attempt at defending for the last goal

a corner is definately an assist :? why would it not be?

An assist is usually made to credit a player's performance. In the case of a corner its something every professional footballer should be able to do, its nothing special. It annoys me when people keep on pointing out corners as assists when the person taking the corner obviously has the advantage over someone who doesn't. Its often used almost as though its a comparable skill to actually scoring the goal. It can't be compared to a real assist in open play and then of course some are more skillful than others.

Would you class a scoring a penalty as scoring a goal?

Do you honestly think that Sean Morrison would get the same amount of assists as Whittingham from corners?

The last 2 home games has seen 3 assists (if my memory is right) from Ralls taking set pieces, so IMO he should be taking corners are crossing free kicks before Whitts as he's proved to be more accurate for our players.

I do agree with you though that an assist from a set piece taker shouldn't be used to back up an argument against a player who doesn't take set pieces.

Scoring from a penalty is a goal but it seriously shouldn't be compared to scoring from open play. No one should be feted for scoring a penalty as someone who scores from open play. Huge advantage taking a penalty and quite honestly any player should score 8 out of ten times as we see in penalty shoot outs. Even more so with corners. Theres less pressure and any decent professional footballer should be able to execute one with little difficulty. I dont quite understand your point about Morrison but if you are suggesting anyone else could have taken the corners he scored from then I would say emphatically yes. If you are asking whether Morrison's skill was greater than Whittingham's in scoring the goal then again I would say emphatically yes. A corner is never ever placed exactly on the attacker's head, they usually need to jump and deflect the ball into the net whilst avoiding the goalkeeper who has the huge advantage of being able to use his hands.

If we are being pedantic then yes a flighted cross from a corner which results in a goal is an "assist" in the same way a hoof into the air from a defender which deflects off someone's arse into the goal is in fact a goal. My point and in particular with this post is it gives some players undue credit when much else of their game is questionable and of course only credits the player taking the spot kick to the disadvantage of those not given the opportunity.
