Preview: Wigan Athletic vs. Cardiff City

Malky Mackay is still searching for his first home win in charge of Wigan Athletic as he prepares to face former club Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

The Latics' winless streak at home under Mackay stretched to eight games - they haven't won at the DW Stadium at all since August - as they were beaten 3-0 by Charlton Athletic on Friday.

That leaves Wigan still in 23rd place, but now nine points adrift of safety with 14 games of the season to go.

It has gone worse than Mackay surely could have ever imagined, but he can point to the fact that he has been desperately unlucky with injuries.

Against Charlton two more players had to come off injured and both Leon Clarke and William Kvist will have to sit out Cardiff's visit.

Clarke might not play again this season after returning to parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers for a second scan on a shoulder injury after he fell awkwardly three days ago.

Wigan are horribly out of form having won just two of their last 19 games and scored just twice in their last six outings, but visitors Cardiff are also stuck in a rut with just two goals in five games.

Russell Slade's men are without a win in seven league games and have won just one of their last 13 games to tumble towards the bottom three.
Saturday's stalemate at Huddersfield Town made it four draws in a row for the Bluebirds, who are just seven points above the drop zone.

Scott Malone is Slade's only new concern and the left-back will miss out at Wigan after coming off in the first half against Huddersfield.

Cardiff have won just one of their last 11 games against Wigan in the league, but that was in the reverse when they claimed a 1-0 victory at home.

Wigan:

Recent form: LDLLWL

Possible starting lineup: Al-Habsi; Perch, Maguire, Pearce, Taylor; Ojo, Kim, McCann, McClean; McKay, Waghorn

Cardiff:

Form in Championship: LLDDDD
Form in all competitions: LLDDDD

Possible starting lineup: Marshall; Petier, Morrison, Ecuele Manga, Connolly; Noone, Whittingham, Gunnarsson, Kennedy; Doyle, Jones

Sports Mole says: 1-1

Malky Mackay will face Cardiff City for the first time since his acrimonious departure scrapping to save his job at Wigan Athletic.
Mackay is under increasing pressure ahead of the crucial match with his former club on Tuesday and battling to avoid relegation to League One.

Vincent Tan, the Cardiff chairman who sacked Mackay in December 2013, will not be at the DW Stadium but will be acutely aware that his club could inflict further damage on the Scot’s hopes of staying in charge.

Mackay, 43, has endured 10 defeats from 15 Championship games and Wigan are nine points from safety.
He remains under a Football Association investigation in to allegations that he sent racist and homophobic text messages during his tenure in South Wales. That investigation was opened in August and a verdict is not expected imminently. However, it is believed that the threat of action from Cardiff is still possible, with the Welsh club’s own investigation in to Mackay’s alleged conduct still ongoing.

With those allegations hanging over him, Mackay was a controversial appointment by Wigan owner Dave Whelan in November, as a replacement for Uwe Rosler. Whelan later landed himself in trouble with the FA in his attempts to defend the appointment, with the governing body punishing him with a six-week ban for offensive comments about Jewish and Chinese people.
Whelan has spent much of that time at his home in Barbados, with Wigan’s games streamed via video link. He is now back in the country and understood to be seriously concerned at the prospect of Wigan – FA  Cup winners in 2013 – dropping in to the third tier.

A defeat against Cardiff would increase fears over Wigan’s short-term future but Mackay insists Tuesday's game is not a revenge mission.
“It’s never about proving a point, absolutely not. I’ve been in football a long time and I’ve had various clubs – Queens Park, Celtic, Norwich, West Ham, Watford, Cardiff,” he said. “You make friends and you have special moments at every club you’re at. Footballers, coaches and managers do throughout their career. They are the things you hold on to. Managers get sacked, that happens the world over. I’ve got some terrific memories and there’s some really good people who work there.
“I enjoyed my time down there and was very proud of what a lot of people did at that point. “Right now we’re doing nothing other than focusing and concentrating on ourselves. It’s the only way that we’re going to get out of what we’re in right now.”

What The Bosses Say - Latics v Cardiff City

Tuesday 24th Feb 2015

Latics face Cardiff City at the DW Stadium on Tuesday, an important game with time fast running out for our survival, three points and nothing else will do, without a home win since August though this could be a tough ask.

Cardiff are in the middle of a bad run and will be looking to get back on track, they haven't won in Wigan since 1997 and they've never won at the DW so again a tough task for Russell Slade's men.

In the build up to the game both managers have been speaking to the media, let's take a look at what they've had to say:

Latics boss Malky Mackay - 'I had terrific times at Cardiff, and I'm really proud to have been associated with some fantastic staff down there who have worked tirelessly for that football club for many years.

'But, it's nothing other than three points, it's just another game'

'Right now we're doing nothing other than focusing and concentrating on ourselves. It's the only way that we're going to get out of what we're in right now.'

Speaking about the DW Stadium pitch, which was in terrible condition following Fridays game with Charlton Mackay continued - 'It's not in the best condition I've ever seen a pitch if I'm being kind.

'It's been cutting up a lot and the rain on Friday night didn't help.

'The heavy foot fall on it over Friday and Saturday has caused the surface to suffer, but it's another thing we're just going to have to get on with and deal with.

'At the end of the game the middle part of the pitch was in horrendous state and the deluge in the second half certainly didn't help. We've got to be very careful as to where we try and play the ball against Cardiff; there are certain areas of the pitch we're going to have to be mindful of.'

'The grounds staff have worked incredibly hard to get the surface playable for the game, they've worked pretty much non-stop since Friday night and they deserve a lot of credit for dealing with what has become a tough pitch to maintain, especially through a very wet period of weather.'

Cardiff boss Russell Slade - 'Our job is to do everything we can to win [at Wigan] and hopefully that will help us get a run going

'We are making life difficult for the opposition right now and staying strong at the back, but we must get the win we need.'

'There is an honesty and a good attitude about the performances. We're getting in some good crosses and are creating chances. Overall, it was frustrating that we didn't come away with the three points [from Huddersfield].

'The goals aren't coming for us just now, but if we keep playing the way we are then the wins will come. I felt positive going into the Huddersfield match and I feel positive ahead of Tuesday's game at Wigan. We are making progress.'

TEAM NEWS

Jermaine Pennant is fit to make his Wigan debut but loan striker Leon Clarke's Latics future rests on the severity of his shoulder injury.
He joins William Kvist (hamstring), Grant Holt (knee) and Emyr Huws (ankle) on Malky Mackay's non-starter list.

Cardiff's Matt Connolly is set to be joined at the back by Lee Peltier, who replaces the injured Scott Malone.

Winger Anthony Pilkington is out, but Russell Slade has Eoin Doyle and Kenwyne Jones available up front.

Wigan getting more dangerous, they had the ball in the net, but offside. Kimbo is their best player at the moment, the pitch sounds like nightmare
