Cardiff City boss Russell Slade says goalkeeper Simon Moore has grabbed starting chance 'with both hands'

By Steve Tucker
Following an impressive showing in the Bluebirds’ win in the FA Cup over Colchester recently, Moore made his league debut for Cardiff in the 1-0 win over Fulham
Cardiff City boss Russell Slade has heaped praise on Simon Moore insisting he will have no concerns about starting his stand-in goalkeeper at Carrow Road this weekend.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper has found himself in the considerable shadow of club captain and No.1 David Marshall since he arrived in the Welsh capital from Brentford back in July 2013.
Moore had to be content with a run of Capital One Cup games earlier this campaign to make his Bluebirds debut, but following an impressive showing in the Bluebirds’ win in the FA Cup over Colchester recently, he made his league debut for Cardiff in the 1-0 win over Fulham at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.
Marshall missed that game with an ankle problem and is fighting to be fit for the Bluebirds’ next Championship outing at Carrow Road tomorrow where he would face his former club. Reports suggest Marshall could actually be out for a month with his injury.
It could mean a run in the first team at last for Moore and manager Slade said if that is the case, he has every faith his second choice will be more than up to the challenge.
“I would have no problem at all with Simon starting for us at Norwich not in the slightest,” said Slade.
“He put in a good performance for us against Colchester and then followed that up with a good showing in the win over Fulham. He had the opportunity and really grabbed it with both hands.
“We have a lot of faith in him here. It’s reassuring for us that when David Marshall is absent we have someone of the quality of Simon who can step in for us.
“We are very pleased with him right now and if he does play against Norwich we have every faith he will do a good job for the side.”
Moore, who stands at 6ft 3ins, began his career in the non-leagues before joining Brentford in August 2009. That same year he actually played for his native Isle of Wight in the Island Games.
He made the breakthrough at Griffin Park in 2012 when first choice Richard Lee was injured and Moore stepped into the breach with a series of excellent showings and ended up keeping the shirt.
He helped the Bees to finish third in League One that season although they finally lost out to Yeovil on the play-off final.
His first season at Cardiff saw him not get a look in as the Bluebirds battled in the Premier League and for the second half of the campaign, Moore went on loan to League One Bristol City making 16 appearances for the Robins.
There has been speculation Marshall himself might be set for a move back to the Premier League this month with the Scottish international heavily linked with Everton. But both Slade and Toffees’ boss Roberto Martinez have discounted such speculation.
Whatever happens it seems Moore will be ready and able to answer the call should the Bluebirds need him.
And Slade believes that is the most important aspect of what the his back-up goalkeeper is all about.
“It can be frustrating to be in that position, but Simon’s attitude has always been spot on,” added Slade.
“He took his chance against Colchester and Fulham because he was ready to step in. That’s the most important thing in that situation, even if you are not playing on the weekend, you have to keep yourself mentally and physically prepared to play and that is what Simon has done.
“Technically he is a very good goalkeeper and when you have a good attitude to go with that you have a good all round player on your hands. It’s very pleasing for us.”

Cardiff City striker Alex Revell believes he has "a lot to prove" at his new club.
Revell joined Cardiff from Rotherham in January, having spent the majority of his career playing lower-league and non-league football.
But the 31-year-old is confident he can make an impact with the Bluebirds.
"I feel like I've got a lot to prove but I have done that now for most of my career and I'm looking forward to the challenge," said Revell.
"It's been a great experience so far. Joining such a big club is a really proud moment for me and my family. I've come a long way since playing non-league."
Revell came through the youth ranks at Cambridge but struggled to establish himself and joined non-league side Braintree in 2004.
The forward went on to forge a career in the Football League with Brighton, Southend and Leyton Orient, but says his testing early years were integral to his development.
"That [Cambridge] gave me a great grounding but eventually I just fell out of love with football," said Revell.
"The best thing I ever did was to go non-league and get that buzz back.
"I worked as a gym instructor. They were difficult days. It has definitely helped me to achieve what I have done today."

Alex Revell scored for Rotherham in their League One play-off final win over Leyton Orient in 2014
Revell became Cardiff manager Russell Slade's second signing for the club when he followed left-back Scott Malone in moving to Cardiff City Stadium.
Revell worked under Slade at Leyton Orient, and expects the former Yeovil boss to succeed at Cardiff.
"He's very thorough in what he does. His players all know what their jobs are," added Revell.
"He demands very hard work and that's the first thing that should be in your head.
"He deserves the chances to prove to people that he's the man to take the club forward.
"I really hope and believe he is the right man to do that."

David Marshall, of course, has not travelled, but we will make an assessment on Kenwyne Jones. He has had a hip problem, but is close to being available.
That is yet to be decided. Anthony Pilkington isn’t ready yet, but Federico Macheda is back in training and is okay.

Scott Malone: We are two big clubs, so why can't Cardiff City beat Norwich?
New Bluebirds signing says Russell Slade's men are in confident mood ahead of long trip to Carrow Road
IT sometimes takes a fresh face to bring renewed impetus to a task – and that just might prove the case when it comes to Scott Malone at Cardiff City.
The 23-year-old defender signed from Millwall on January 8 and just two days later he was starting for the Bluebirds against Fulham helping Russell Slade’s men earned a morale-boosting first win in six Championship outings.
It was a much-needed three points for Cardiff, who were in danger of slipping out of play-off contention completely. As it is, the ambition of bouncing straight back to the Premier League still looks a tall order, with the Bluebirds currently in 11th place, seven points off the top six with the long and taxing trip to rejuvenated Norwich lying ahead on Saturday.
The jaundiced eye might well have written Slade and his men’s chances off already, Malone though, who picked up the man-of-the-match award against the Cottagers, is a lot more upbeat than that. With the club buoyed by the return to blue home shirts and that return to winning ways, Malone, a product of the Wolves youth academy, insists the Premier League dream is very far from over.
“It was good to make my debut and a little bit different from what I was used to at Millwall,” said Malone, who signed for a fee of £100,000.
“Obviously, going back to the blue shirts meant it was nice to have the fans back on our side. I’m not sure what it was like before, but obviously the run of five results before that had been disappointing for a club of this stature. We were back to winning ways. I think our overall work-rate was as good as it had been all season. That’s what we have to strive to do now for the remaining games.
“At the start of the season the aim was promotion and we are right in the mix now. We are halfway through the season and we are in the middle of the table. If we can get a few good results, why not go for the play-offs? You strive for the top two and the four places under that are a bonus. I still believe the play-offs are a realistic goal.
“Anyone can get promoted at this stage of the season, anyone. There’s plenty of games left. You win four or five games and you are up there or if you lose four or five suddenly you can get sucked down into it. It’s in your hands. One of the main reasons I came here was the Premier League. Cardiff were there last year and they want to be there again and I want to help them do that.”
Before joining the Lions, Malone was at Bournemouth and, prior to that, whilst on the books at Wolves, he had loan spells at Hungarian club Újpest, who he helped qualify for the Europa League, and at the less exotic environs of Southend and Burton Albion.
It was at the New Den, though, where he established his credentials as a solid, no-nonsense left-back, making 71 appearances for the Lions and grabbing five goals during two-and-a-half seasons.
With his contract up this summer, Malone felt it was time to make the move, with the Welsh capital his preferred option.
That’s not to say there was not interest from elsewhere including, surprisingly, German giants Borussia Dortmund and, maybe more understandably, Birmingham who, perhaps, were never in the running for a life-long Aston Villa fan.
“The move to Cardiff took a couple of weeks. Coming up to January I heard about the interest. I was in contract, so it was just about a bid coming in really. As soon as that came in I was there,” said Malone.
“I was coming to the end of my contract at Millwall. I had six months left. I’ve just had a young daughter, so I felt it was the best decision for me. Cardiff is a massive club that was playing in the Premier League last season. It’s a bit of security for my family and I think it’s best for my career at this point in time. I’m 23, so I’ve come to this club to push my career on.
“I don’t think the Dortmund thing was as big as it was made out. But it’s a Champions League club, there was a call there, but nothing of any real significance at this point. But it’s nice to be talked about in relation to a club like that. Birmingham were keen on me too. I’ve worked with Gary Rowett before at Burton, so that was a possibility, but Cardiff made sense to me.”
Malone admitted there is a bit of unfinished business to be dealt with against Norwich and Cardiff’s next opponents Middlesbrough from his time at Millwall earlier this season.
“With Millwall we got beat 5-1 by Boro at home and 6-1 at Norwich on Boxing Day,” added Malone.
“I didn’t play against Norwich. I did against Boro. I think we were 4-0 down at half-time. They are both good teams, but we are a good team as well.
“There’s massive clubs in this division. If you can go to Norwich and get something with them just having beaten top-of-the-league Bournemouth at their place. then it will stand you in good stead. We are going there for the win, we are two big clubs and why can’t we beat them?”
Well, when you put it like that Mr Malone, why not indeed?

TEAM NEWS
Norwich boss Alex Neil has Carlos Cuellar ready to play again after recovering from a calf strain.
Ryan Bennett has a hamstring tear and will miss the game with Alex Tettey (groin) also doubtful for Neil's first home game in charge.
Bruno Manga is on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Gabon but boss Russell Slade could name an unchanged Cardiff side.
New signing Alex Revell may make his full debut and Kadeem Harris might also be in contention for a starting spot.

Will it be blue or red for Cardiff on Saturday against Norwich? Red was going to be used away from home even though we'll not need to at Carrow Road.
Norwich's new manager Alex Neil take charge of his first home game and for this he should have the experienced Carlos Cuellar back after a calf problem but Ryan Bennett's hamstring tear will keep him out with Alex Tettey also a doubt.
With a win secured at the Cardiff City Stadium last Saturday it's possible that Russell Slade will name the same side. Alex Revell made his debut from the bench last Saturday so if a change is made he might hope to start this time.
Bruno Manga is away with Gabon at the African Cup of Nations.
Norwich beat us 4-2 at the Cardiff City Stadium in September as they came back to put us to the sword and beat us for the first time in five, we've won only once at Carrow Road in 11 attempts, Saturday would be a good time to add another win to this.

Can't see us getting anything from this game. I hope that we are not going to be on the wrong end of a big score, but I fear the worst, and wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of unhappy fans on this forum tomorrow.
