I can sit with my family in safety, not having to worry about the away fans being chased through us by mindless morons as happened in the 60s and 70s (Villa games were particularly bad, as I remember).
One thing makes atmosphere - the performance on the pitch. The crowd respond accordingly. You can't say we don't get atmosphere when we wear red - last year's Man City game proved that. That game also had a full family stand, and full of the new band of supporters.
The struggling years in the lower leagues may have been fun for the old school supporters, but the reason there were so few people in the crowds was that the football was crap. It's only stupid addicts like us who go week in, week out no matter how good or bad we are. The rest of the world decide whether they want to spend hard earned money watching your team lose. It's human nature, I'm afraid.
