The runway can take a380s aswell at 747s!
Just a shame it can't attract anyone that wants to use them (apart from ba maintenance!)

the flights from cardiff to dusseldorf is not a fair comparison to Bristol services.

If Bristol had the same flights to Germany, it too would have few passengers.

Of course lots of people want to go to Spain, Prague, Portugal and ski resorts...they just happen to be going from Bristol.

They are going from Bristol now because of the excessive charges Cardiff charged for planes in past years. hopefully these reported charges re now being reduced.

If the WAG wanted to it could "arrange" for the size of the runway to be increased and also "arrange" for free/cheaper runway fees for the airlines.

The result would be more flights into South Wales. Benefits to the communities in both West and South Wales and economic improvements as well.

Paul, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the runway already long enough to take 747 (Jumbo) Jets??

Last time I spoke to anyone from there, I was told that the big issue was (as you say) the relatively extortionate Landing Fees for airlines landing this side of the Channel versus the Brrrsol side

That may have changed under WAG??

The runway is long enough to land with passangers but can only take off with minium weight not a full load

With Ryanair coming back on board hopefully it might increase the routes over the next few years

Thanks, Allan (and Wez)

I flew to Florida from Cardiff a couple of times in the past (with Monarch the last time, I think) and always find the airport pretty good whenever I use it and it will always get my support. Wales needs its own transport hub, if it is to continue with its quest for more autonomy and attract business investment

At end of the day lots airlines are cutting back regardless of where they fly from , our passenger numbers have increased over all since wag took over, also airlines were cutting back before wag took over because veuling was running airport down hence wag taking over to save it! But guess people prefer it to close for good because wag are the owners, although it is run by a proper management company on behalf of wag!

Many would prefer the WAG took the Sevenside airport idea which Independant assessors choose to be the best option. That assessment cost the welsh taxpayer millions and a week after the results went public the WAG threw it out and brought Cardiff Airport. That alone should show everyone that is was a vanity project

Well a quiet night on the messageboard - at least we can celabrate the fact that the airport has secured a weekly flight to Germany

Not exactly what it needs but small steps .....

Plus a couple of flights to Orlando all of which is welcome but something more substantial needs to be secured ASAP to stop the decline

Hopefully the airport will make good use of the route development fund

Major boost for Cardiff Airport with airline Flybe to announce 10 new routes including to Munich, Dublin, Paris and Milan.

Airline Flybe is expected to announce a significant expansion of its routes out of Cardiff Airport tomorrow morning in a move that will provide a huge boost to passenger numbers.

The airline, currently operates a Cardiff to Belfast route and from April will launch a new summer season once a week service to Dusseldorf.

However, in a major vote of confidence in Cardiff, it has agreed to locate two aircraft at the Rhoose-based airport.

It is understood that it is making a long-term commitment to the airport in an investment being supported by the Welsh Government.

Details of the new routes will be revealed tomorrow by Flybe, which is listed on the London Stock Market.

However, they are understood to be:

Cork, Dublin, Edinburgh, Faro, Geneva, Glasgow International, Jersey, Milan Malpensa, Munich and Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Currently in Dubai having flown from Cardiff (via Amsterdam) with KLM. Although it is a small airport. The space in the departure lounge is non existent, it is so cramped, there is also a big Swansea City FC section in there but no Cardiff.

The new routes is great news.

But the airport needs major transport links. No one wants to drive through Barry or down five mile lane to get to the airport. It needs a duel carriageway from the A48 at Culverhouse Cross. Or from the nearest point on the M4. The train links are good. (Potentially talking about half hourly services instead of hourly over the VOG line which serves Rhoose/Cardiff International Airport).

The airport is a major eyesore tjough. But they are trying to get it back to a sustainable level, and it's a lot better now than in my last visit in 2008.
