Andorra's National Stadium: All roads lead to Euro 2016 as Wales prepare for final step on decade-long journey
Sep 08, 2014

By Chris Wathan

Wales' Euro qualifying campaign begins in Andorra la Vella on Tuesday evening with expectations of a return to a major finals high

Too small for an airport, too mountainous for motorways or rail, the only option for both players and travelling fans is to brave a winding, lengthy bus ride that is not for the faint-hearted or weak-stomached.

Yet, as the dawn of a new qualification campaign arrives , there was a renewed hope that the hardest part of the journey for this Wales side is behind them.

It has been arduous, almost soul-destroying at times for those willing our exile from major finals to come to an end.

It has seen some fans give up in apathy over international football and the national side, convinced that this country’s fate is never to grace the biggest stages no matter what talented players can be called upon.

But there is an undeniable sense that a destination is at last in sight. There is more than hope for Euro 2016, there is expectation.

Because this is what everything has been driving towards for the past decade. During the blood-letting under John Toshack, there was also the blooding of a new breed ready for a campaign such as this.

Players, in reality far too young for the demands of international football, were capped so that there would be no excuses later down the road. Gareth Bale is not only a brilliant talent, but at the age of 25 and with 44 caps, he is already a hugely experienced one.

It is a route that has shown success with others. Germany, praised for the way their team was allowed to develop, had an average age of 24 and an average cap tally of 52 in their World Cup final win. Wales, even with solo cap James Chester included, have an average age of 23 with 30 caps a man. That is no shabby comparison.

Young talent has grown together. The likes of Neil Taylor, Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey were all given their under-21 debuts on the same night some seven years ago with nights and campaigns like this in mind, that trio and more blossoming under Gary Speed.

But yeah, other than that we should be golden.

What on earth are you on about?

We have a goalkeeper, and a good one at that. His name is Wayne Hennessey.

We have three centre-halves, not one. James Chester, Ashley Williams and Danny Gabbidon.

We also have two decent strikers. Simon Church has scored goals for Wales, while Tom Lawrence is a promising forward.

Chris Coleman tells star man Gareth Bale: Go fire Wales to Euro 2016 qualification
Sep 09, 2014

By Chris Wathan

Coleman has handed Bale a role up front against minnows Andorra as he looks to start the Euro campaign with a bang

Gareth Bale

Wales kick off their bid to finally end their finals heartache later – with Chris Coleman telling Gareth Bale to go and attack the campaign from the off.

Coleman’s side take on minnows Andorra in tonight’s Group B opener with a win a must if the hope of making it to Euro 2016 is to be realised over the next two years.

And the national boss is taking no chances as he gets set to name Bale as a striker as he looks to ensure Andorran attempts to frustrate the visitors on a controversial artificial surface are blown away.

The Real Madrid ace has had the blessing of Bernabeu bosses to figure, despite concerns over the recently-laid 3G pitch, and Coleman said: “I’ve seen Gareth play everywhere: wing-back, left wing, midfield, played across the front.

“I was in Madrid to watch him a few weeks ago and he started on the right, then went to the left and in the middle. He can play everywhere and it’s no secret we’ve lost Sam Vokes while Simon Church, who is an out-and-out striker, is not playing regularly for Charlton.

BBC Wales football correspondent Rob Phillips in Andorra:

"In the absence of a recognised centre-forward playing regular club football, star man Gareth Bale is set to start up front.

"Aaron Ramsey will be expected to provide support, probably alongside Andy King, with Joe Allen and Joe Ledley - barring fitness concerns - providing stability.

"George or Jonathan Williams could provide pace out wide while at the back Swansea defender Neil Taylor looks poised to get the left-back berth ahead of former team-mate Ben Davies.

"Hull's James Chester will make his competitive debut. Chris Gunter and goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey will hope for a relatively quiet time in a defensive unit led by Ashley Williams, who would see qualification as the pinnacle of his career."

Exactly!

Some are saying they would accept a 0-1 result, however, Andorra will be the "whipping boys" and teams will be looking to boost their goal difference against them. We have to try to go for the jugular against them.

How they could pass the pitch as 'fit for playing' is ridiculous ... but, we should still beat this team easily. However, we have Coleman as a manager - ENOUGH SAID!!!
