The whole 'signing a new contract' thing is quite a logical thing for a club to do. You offer your best players, ones that have a chance of leaving or are close to running out a new contract.
There is a signing on fee which people seem to forget quite a bit, but also it means that A) they' get payed more and B) that means a team tempting away will have to pay more due to the length of contract and the fact they were given better money at their current club.
If the player has a fondness for the current club then it could actually be used as a tactic to get them more money.

people are saying 'now hudson can go'. hudson offers experience and is a great dressing room influence. he isn't the player he was two years ago, but a fantastic deputy.
the money could be better spent elsewhere, like central midfield. if we sign anyone in defence we need to get one out before even thinking about spending £4,000,000 on yet another CB.

Makes sense to have more options in DM. With two holding midtfielders, the four forward players and full backs from time to time can bomb forward.

What the hell don't people get about this?
we have a transfer committee, it gives the manager less to worry about, there are no problems between Ole and Tan probably because they're both mostly decent and reasonable men....

Well seeing as how OLE is the gaffer and Tan controls the cash flow,id imagine theyre both behind it

Hopefully this isn't a signing for this season alone, but part of the push for PL. £4m is a hell of a fee for a defender in The Championship, but reasonable for a quality defender/DMer in PL. If he helps gain promotion AND is capable of playing I the top tier, happy days!
