It's about time refs played advantage to stop players going to ground - credit to Wickham for staying on his feet. Cala's inept back-pass was the cause.

It's going to be a long afternoon :(

The penalty :? You have got to be joking. It was 5 yards outside the box.

It continued in the box therefore it is a penalty!!

ok carried on in box so what about him playing on to try score or is that not counted? cant have both ways!! :o

You will have it both ways if your playing against Cardiff. I know we have been poor this year but some of the refereeing this year has been sub standard to say the least.

No. You give the foul where it started. For someone who professes a lot about the game you seemingly know feck all.

its always originally position of foul! also if you say its because it caried on in box? what about him playing on to score? does tha not count or is it have one chance get another free???

Basics of football. You either play advantage or you dont.

:laughing6: of course you can, the ref is perfectly within his rights to see if an advantage would be had by not blowing up - if there isnt an advantage then he can pull it back.

This happens all the time.

Read the FA Directive, they have instructed all refs to play advantage like egg chasing, to play as long they deem advantage has been provided, no advantage, blow up and give offence!

He didn't pull it back to where the foul started. He pulled it back to the end of the foul to suit himself. Not excusing us however as we've been dire. We're destined for the Championship and deserve it. Still doesn't excuse his crap refereeing. All about referees in the PL to be fair. One thing im looking forward too next season is referees who dont wish to be the centre of attention and let the game be played in good spirit with rough tackles.

The foul CONTINUED into the box, Dowd played advantage - it doesn't need to be where the foul started. Correct decision all day long.

Our defender - if you can call him that - put himself in that position and also put us out of the Premier League!

He doesnt have to.

Cala started to pull Wickham - ref thought advantage would be fair as he is through on goal.

Any foul committed in the period of "advantage" is treated the same as any other foul.

Cala continued to pull him inside the box where another advantage would have been given as he was still through on goal.

The foul forced him wide so he blew for a penalty and the red card for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Law 5 is absolutely clear on adavantage:

•allows play to continue when the team against which an offence has been committed will benefit from such an advantage and penalises the original offence if the anticipated advantage does not ensue at that time

No doubt that the "Anticipated Adavantage" has not in Dowds opinion ensued so his authority under the laws of the game clearly show he must go back to the original offence.

A free kick outside the box and red card for Cala. Simples.

The original offence was a shirt pull that continued into the box.... Which is a penalty.

Well then thats me Graeme Souness, Phil Dowd and Gary Neville who know feck all then.

Penalty.

Yes, pundits do know nothing.

If Wickham had scored Cala wouldn't have been sent off. They had the advantage and wasted it by going wide! Shocking decision! Also foul started outside the box. I think we would gave lost anyway 2 be honest bit so many decisions have gone against us this season it hasn't helped.

Re: Phil Dowd

Sun Apr 27, 2014 1:45 pm

The advantage was unusually long, he got a shot and a cross off before he blew. When refs play advantage normally if the team moves the ball forward enough distance or get a shot off, play just continues. He effectively gave Sunderland 3 chances to score a goal and a man advantage, which is an absurd result from one action.

Lots of players are of the opinion that a red and a penalty turns a game way too far, one or the other is enough.

All I want is consistent refereeing, if play is to be pulled back for a foul after shots/crosses/rounding the goalkeeper then so be it, but it hasn't happened in the other 3150 minutes this season so why now?
