Agree with Llantwit Blue. I think cost has played a part as well. A lot of the boys I used to go down with can't afford it any more, and it looks as if football is trying to attract a different sort of supporter to those of a few years ago. £90 for an England shirt, £100 plus for a father to take his 2 boys to a game, it's not too attractive to people earning minimum wages. Not long before a pie and a pint is replaced with strawberries and cream, washed down with a glass of wine, and supporters replace chanting with polite applause, a bit like Old Trafford now.

Things with an edge have died out in the uk these days, we are a sanitised bland boring nation. I don't mean that we need the threat of violence like there used to be, you can see passion in some stadia in Europe now and there is no hooliganism or fighting, Bilbao in Spain, Italian clubs, German even the Swiss. Not to mention Greece and the Turks. Clubs used to have it too, the early raves in warehouses etc. we would protest at the government to, now we just accept everything they throw at us.
The youth of today eh? Too busy on there iphones and wearing crap generic clothes to even challenge the normality. Society is broken. Thank god I lived it when I did.

Of course when we played teams like Scunthorpe and Carlisle, who brought about 30 fans it was dead, but this year almost every club has sold their allocation and there's still nothing in the air.

When we played teams like Bristol, Millwall, Stoke, Leeds, Swansea, Boro, Brum and even teams like Burnley, Barnsley there was something in the air and a genuine us against them between the two sets of fans.

Now, both sets of fans have more of a feel of a rugby crowd than a football crowd.

I have a video of us versus Watford in the last season at ninian park when Mccormack scores a penalty to win the game in the last minute and the celebrations are absolutely bonkers. You just don't feel that type of energy there anymore. (I'll try to dig it out later)

I've gotta be honest (I know circumstances have dictated) but I hate fact that everyone wears colours to the game now. 15 years ago there was hardly anyone in club merchandise.

To answer some of your questions, yes it probably did have something to do with the "lad element" that attached itself to our club but I'm honest enough to say that I miss it.

I'm not on about dick heads picking off one's and two's or some pissed up tit arguing with police just for the sake of it. I can have a conversation with fans from other teams in a pub, I just mean that feeling of 'we are cardiff and if you don't like us who gives a f**k'.

I don't want to be everyone's second team, I want to have a hardcore of fans with one voice and who love the club and don't get on the players back at every opportunity.

I have mixed feelings about the Palace Ultra thing. Part of me thinks 'at least they're trying something but another part of me cringes and thinks it seems more like artificial bollocks than true passion.

Like I said in the op, i'm not expecting everyone to agree with me and some may well think I'm an idiot but it is honestly the way I feel.

Part of me is ashamed to say it, but I hate it. I used to love going to football when there was that bit of edge about it, but it has completely gone and football in this country is no longer the same.

It pisses me off when I see our fans having love ins with other fans.
I loved the fact that everyone hated us. Now we are just an irrelevant club like Watford or Norwich.

I love going abroad these days to places like turkey cos football is still a passion rather than an event like going to the cinema.

I get more and more disillusioned with football in this country every year. Perhaps the problem is me not everyone else but surely me and my mates can't be the only ones that feel this way?!

I agree.I loved those days.

for me the move from NP and the huge increase in ST holders saw a total sea change at our club..no longer could a group of young men decide on the day to watch the city, have a few beers, pay at gate, then position themselves close to the away fans for a bit of a wind, its book in advance, maybe sit apart, and miles from where the fun is.........its not just our club, the atmosphere hasnt been great anywhere we have played this year....the Ethiad was empty with 10 mins left last night...its just how it is........for those of a certain generation, its time to take the positives from the game now, better facilities,pitches,etc........and just be glad you were born when you were.......you only have to read some of the comments on here to realise it was a generation thing and the youngsters have a different take on it..
those days are gone........we can be in league two in blue,or in pink and green stripes, those days are the past.....

A woman hit in the face by a stone at Ninian Park. A fan with a dart in his face at Swansea. A Cardiff Fan with his glasses smashed into his eyes by a stone at Preston. A Stoke fan lying unconscious under the bridge by the Ninian Pub still being kicked in the head by Cardiff fans. A Chelsea fan stabbed outside Ninian Park. A little girl from Cardiff crying because she has been separated from her father who was beaten up at Derby. A Reading fan cowardly attacked from behind by Cardiff fans outside the Madjeski Stadium.

Is this the edge you miss? Personally I've seen enough of the violence. I enjoy watching football not fighting. I enjoy shouting encouragement at my team not shouting mindless abuse at opposition fans while not even watching the game.

Things have improved for the better, the old days are thankfully gone, however there are still enough fans willing to drag us back into the gutter if we are complacent enough to let it happen!

Nobody said they wanted incidents like that again. Just that more passion and hostility in the ground which ultimately affects the opposing team.

Plus shouting abuse at the away fans is the best part of the day. You can watch football on TV if that's all you go for. You get a better view that way too

Fortunately the majority of our fans prefer to watch games at the stadium and not on TV, to get the match day experience. They do not, unlike you think that the " best part of the day" is shouting abuse at the away fans.
I've seen enough of the morons shouting abuse at away fans over the safety of a fence and a line of coppers protected by CCTV, thankfully they are a minority at the CCS and most eventually grow out of it!

unfortunately the incidents that you have highlighted are a byproduct. Like you, I am glad that such incidents are a thing of the past, but I'm afraid we seem to have thrown out the baby with the bath water.
I'm not gonna lie, I have no problem with two like minded sets of lads meeting up for a row. The problem is that there are always a few dick heads who involve those who don't want to be involved.

Of course it's good that those who don't have any interest now feel safer but I speak from a personal view point that it was probably the fact that Cardiff had that element is what attracted me when I was 12/13 in the first place.

There are pros and cons for me but I do think that football had become far too sanitised and it doesn't even feel like the same thing I fell in love with at times.

I wish I could articulate my sentiments a bit better. Some seem to have understood me but then others have been way off the mark, but I do have sympathy with your view too.

Probably worded that a bit wrong, made me sound like a yob
What I mean is it's not all about the football. The match day experience is more about the atmosphere around the ground. And banter with the away fans is always class. It would just be boring and sterile without it.
