Remember unpacking the book when I moved in with new missus when it first came out. She scoured the book to see if my name was in it. Thank feck it wasn't, although a few side looks were given when I was off to the match, especially when we were playing away. Daves account was excellent and gives younger fans a sense of our rivalry with Cewnty. :ole:

I'll try to be as honest as I can. When city played us in the 80's, we were always out-numbered, as the valley hordes came from every little shite hole in south wales.
We never run unless someone on here knows different, but certaintly didn't win any battles at a Cardiff v Newport game and that is fact, however as the owner of this forum will know all about, there have been several times that the soul crew have been run by cewnty, notably when hartridge played a rugby cup final in the old Cardiff arms park.
Not sure if city were home that day, but must have been given the numbers they mustered up that day.
IF anyone on here was there that day, we were drinking in the philharmonic, with 50 top lads when Cardiff found out. There were several good battles, but Cardiff got well and truly done that day, I could also mention the U2 concert when we took libertys in Cardiff, and quite a few Saturdays, when we come down for it.
Unfortunately no mobile phones were about then to arrange a proper off, but don't ever slag off little old cewnty, we was and still have plenty of top lads if it ever kicks off.
I think we'd all agree that those days are better off a thing of the past, oh and forgot about wales v Italy (Milan) when you came unstuck with far superior numbers.
Wont mention when annis took a hiding at spytty as you didn't bring any lads for that friendly, and the shit heads who were involved were nothing but cowards in my eyes, and you'll only have to look on u tube when we came to ninian and were fighting with the OB, to once again prove we are no mugs.
Once again no show by the soul crew, that night. wont mention Merthyr when I few Cardiff tried to have a crack by that petrol station just around the corner fron the ninian pub.
Don't think theres any lies or bullshit written here citygent annis is there?CTID

Not in any of the book he didnt cos he was never f*cking there, he supported merthyr until 2008

His name might be mentioned in the back, because, and god only knows, Dave is one of his best friends these days.

How someone who I have the upmost respect for in Dave befriended this clown I will never know. I can only assume the comedy value.

One funny story on the bus on the way to the cup semi final Brownie fell asleep and someone put a bag of coke on his face and was taking pictures (he was councillor at the time) and when he woke up they were teasing him that they were going to send the pictures to the Merthyr Express / Echo.

He was being ridiculed loads, as he usually does, so he went further down to the bus and asked Dave would he have a word with Hopkins and Modgey cos they were teasing him. :laughing5:

Dave just laughed at him and so he come in for more ridicule.

When Annis took a beating , we were there with good numbers and good boys. We tried to get to the ground but the ob put us in some pub . I'm sure it was the Carpenters pub :? and Newport come to the pub with some lunatic woman off her tits on pills I think but all good fun .

no mate when you got attacked it was in the corporation hotel, the carpenters is the old 'hall of fame', and is in the city centre ;) All I know from that night and I got heavily involved was when it kicked off in maindee, and there were 7 arrests that went to crown court(1 city valley boy).
Apparently a load of your lads went to the Newport retail park to have a drink in the superbowl or was it tgi's (thank god its Fridays or whatever it stands for?)
I KNOW there was a lot of mobile calling for a meet that day. There was a pub load of over 40's waiting in the George in maindee for you but you didn't show and that's the truth. AND like I said I felt sorry for annis what happened outside the stadium. totally out of order and if I was there I would have given him a hand against the wannabe teenage hooligans who haven't got a clue with rules from when hooligans had a code ;)

I try to stay out of these arguments, but you've brought up a few things that I disagree with. The Valleys, especially the Rhondda, have never rated Newport in the slightest. It was a place we always went in the 70's/80's and walked around with no trouble whatsoever. Your mob was chased out of the end by the side of the away fans twice in the early 80's by Dai H and co. At a home game at NP around the same time, you brought 150 in total to the game, 5 of us were walking to the Coldstream, when you all came off the train and ran towards us, we stayed, then another 20 or so turned up, and again gave it the big one, eventually due to sheer numbers we had to leg it...100 onto 5...well done. At one home game 30 of of you had been to watch the rugby at the Arms Park, you attacked 10 of us on the bridge by the old Empire Pool, 3 of us stayed, and nothing happened. Some of you went to the Cambrian where you get legged out of there amid a lot of glass throwing. Your antics against Annis and his friends outside Brownhills and non football occasions are of no interest to me. City Gent/Annis are both a fair bit younger than me, so will have more insight re the late 80's/90's . Honestly, never rated you at all, sorry.

Newport always got a good deal of respect from cardiff, but there were times we simply took over the place like when we went up in 1988. 2000 city fans, mostly lads too. The return leg you turned up after kick off I believe, 300 of you? As for the thing in Milan, you took a hammering, quite mad but a hammering.

Re: Soul Crew by David Jones and Tony Rivers

Fri Mar 14, 2014 9:05 pm

We went to Newport in 74 ish, evening game, Welsh cup or something, a few hundred city went up on the train and we walked all over the town with no opposition, took their home end easily, they weren't up for it back then.

Replying to NCFC1

As far as I am concerned Ive rated Newport right back to my first encounter with them in 1979/80 season when 5 of us went over there, County v Pompey. We got run out of their end for being Cardiff, then run out of Pompey's
From that day, I realised how much Newport hated us and the Cardiff lads who were going regular in the 80's, will know Newport always had a good 80-100 lads on their day and many good lads. When City played them, then it was no contest as we just took over the place and the police would just surround Newport's lot and let us walk about so many Cardiff would not see them.

But our weekly battles away from the derby games Newport were always game.

What happened 14 years ago in my eyes was cowardly by Newport, I was on my own with a girl and to be surrounded by up to 30 Newport and then jumped from behind and not by just their young ones, but by many old heads, pictures in one of my books and then repeatedly kicked in the head, sorry that day, Newport lost all my respect I had for them.

My memories of the 80s and 90's were that Newport were far more game than the Jacks

As to Anthony Rivers book, a very good read  I had it typed up for him and at the time got him to take my name out of all the chapters, so it just says AA at the back

I believe the book has sold over 90,000 copies

The Cardiff based lads always felt that Newport were their No1 rivals and couldn't really understand why people classed the Jacks as the main rivalry.

Cardiff were playing at home that day Southend if I remember right around 1990. I was unfortunate to be on st Marys street when it kicked off a group of Cardiff no more than 10 I'd say but we'll up for it went down to the philomonic and if I remember threw a bin at the big windows to entice you out. Don't know if this is the same incident but seems a bit familiar. Don't know what happened later as can remember fans wandering around the bob bank saying Newport have a mob in town and they were going into meet you.

Definitely The Carpenters. Your lot came from The George although later I found out some of your lads who got nicked wernt actually in there.

City took a bus from Cardiff to Newport, found a pub stayed stuum and then were making their way to the ground when they got apprehended by heddlu. Gwent dibble dropped a bollock by putting them in the carpenters but there you go it had its advantages for some. Gwents Boudicca was a sight. I think the altercation saw the most senior heddlu ending up on his arse.

Regards to your lads who had over a week in crown especially the part time Brum supporter. Very decent bloke. Even your ginger ninja firestarter kept some amused although unintentionally. :thumbright:
