As for the mostly interesting and correct points made about the age groups--age 30-40 soul crew types, that means that most of those people were in their nappies when the name started to be used in 1982/83 !

I am in Block 117, Row X and I can categorically say that we did not see a steward for the entire first half, no one in that section was asked to sit down, which was unusual, as for the majority of games, the stewards do crack down. What block of the Ninian are you in?

Block 116, row G, no different last night to normal, they were constantly back and fore, and called a few people out to speak to them as well.

Something happened in the mid to late 90s which effected us for good. The rise of the Premier League. And with it the rise of much more popular teams to support than lowly Cardiff City.

Luckily I was not one of them an my dad took me to NP from the age of 3. However, when I was in school nearly nobody around me supported us. They all supported Man U, Liverpool, Newcastle etc.

Now I am 25 and really the last generation of the kids who went down to NP to watch Hereford and Rochdale and whoever else. Nobody coming up in the next generations really knows what it's like and even people my age have been lucky with the success we have seen.

BUT imagine all the people who were omitted from our potential fan base thanks to the new PL all those years ago. It has left us with a strange demographic that I believe goes something like this:

50+ = tired, hate everything about PL football, crave the good old days, simply don't want to sing (especially songs about scruffy c***s and pedos).

30 - 40 = The soul crew era. Still try their best but they have mellowed now and prefer away days. Go to home matches with their kids rather than their mates.

20 - 29 = the Sam Hammam generation. Know little about the tough times but love a good sing song. Unfortunately there are few of us because most of our mates are Man U glory supporters.

Under 20 = mostly in it for the laugh. Love PL football and not necessarily Cardiff City just yet. Might sing a bit or try and join in from the family stand occasionally.

I know it's a generalisation but that is my perspective on our SHIT atmosphere.

Fit the 20-29 bit, pretty true. None of my friends support a team like Cardiff. The two of my mates I was with we're cheering for Cardiff, but were actually Man city fans I'd asked to come along. They were saying they couldn't imagine what it's like trying to support a team through something tough like this. And I thought that actually our fans have been through a fair bit of heartbreak the last couple of seasons. Since we started challenging for promotion in the champ, there was that feeling of heartbreak when we didn't quite make it. I shed tears when we didn't go up against Blackpool, just like I cried lat year when it was finally true and my dad and I stood there watching the pitch invasion in shock that we'd done it. Needless to say we joined in shortly after ;) He'd been waiting a while longer, mind :P

But yeah I think what made our fans so good last season was the belief we had, something which was shattered by some poor results and the sundering of fans after Malky was given the sack. I miss the atmosphere and the anticipation that last season brought of another win on the horizon, but I'm glad we're here and I think the past heartbreaks we've had we're enough to harden me for the struggle we face this season. I'm trying hard to keep the faith and I want to believe Cardiff can do it! Perhaps the fans need a bit more unity.

There were moments yesterday where the whole crowd rallied and it was great. But I was sat in 108/109 and other than myself, a guy in front of me and a couple behind it was pretty goddamn quiet compared to the centre of the Canton.

All the plastics are out in force in this thread. Going to the game for me is more than about the football, if I wanted to sit in silence listening to twats like Soulofthesea and the other two idiots above me then i'd watch the game at home reading this forum. Fact is I had enough of it last night and for the first time we decided to stay in the concourse for 25 mins rather than sitting on our hands making sure we aren't too rowdy.

It's not about our new stadium it's the new breed of fan that used to support United/Liverpool.

Agree mainly - stadium's don't make sounds, people do. However, I do wonder if a re-think of who sits where for next season, in line with the new stand being built, could help the atmosphere a bit?

The problem is it should have been done prior to the renewals being sent out, so you'd be looking now for the 2015/2016 for changes to take place.

Potentially 'safe standing' could have been introduced by then too which could coincide with the new housing arrangements.

Obviously the Grandstand remains the grandstand, but swap the Canton with the Grange and make that area behind the goals 'safe standing'. Then the bottom end of the ninian stand is allocated for "safe standing" while the top tier is for seating. Essentially a replica of the way Ninian was before we moved.

It'll never replace Ninian Park but it may go some way towards recreating the old atmosphere. Granted it's a vicious circle - the team plays well, the supporters get behind the team, the supporters getting behind the team lifts the players etc...

Just a thought.

I honestly in my 20/25 years of going can't put my finger on what's gone so drastically wrong (not just on the pitch). Forget the whole rebrand, manager changes, Vincent Tan angel or devil debates as they have been done to death. Everyone has their own views on each subject but they cannot be the whole reason why it's become so bad down there.

And I can't be the only one thinking it because that's part of the reason why there's no singing anymore, people must be feeling the same. Yes we are in a right pickle on the pitch and the nervousness and tension can be felt, but when we were shit we used to sing, nowadays it's almost as if you're cast as having the plague if you cheer the side on.

Plus you don't half get some useless planks watching who have only come on board recently. That doesn't help.
These two bell ends who sit directly behind me have been spouting shit all season but tonight's bouts of knowledge will take some beating....
1. The pair who we shall call Dumb & Dumber shouted at the tops of their voices "HANDBALL" in OUR area in the first half when it seemed to have hit Catherine on the arm! Brilliant - let's shout for a penalty for the opposition!!
2. 2nd half we could all see what was happening so they were calling for Kimbo to come on. Not a bad shout IF HE WAS ON THE BENCH!
3. When they realised he wasn't on the bench they started shouting for Whitts to come on and "add something different" - again not a bad shout IF HE WAS ON THE BENCH!!
4....And possibly the best, when Campbell was put through in the second half by Jones' flicked header and snatched the shot, Dumb said "Campbell would've scored that if it was him through on goal...." That was bad enough, but Dumber agreed and said "yeh, and why did (whoever he thought was Campbell) he try and be clever bend it with the outside of his foot?!?"
Now I'm no foot specialist but had CAMPBELL shot with the outside of his foot he wouldn't have dragged it 10 yards wide of the post!!!
Seriously - I'm thinking of knocking the pair of them out to get banned on purpose! I don't know what is worse, watching the drivvle that's in front of me or being subjected to the drivvle that's directly behind me!?!?!

Can people be ejected for talking complete shit????

I know how you feel mate, I'm surrounded by morons like this. But they seem to be everywhere, when I go away I always seem to be next to one and I sat in a different seat one game this year and still there were people like this by me. Constant whingers, slagging every player off, really winds me up and ruins the game.

People behind me were also talking sh*t all game. Best comment was when Eikrem came on. His first touch wasn't great and his comment - 'oh God he's as shit as Whittingham'. Now, why judge a player from their first touch and be so f-in negative, but how can you sit there and just say Whittingham is sh*t after everything he's done for the club over the years. Yes he's hit a bad patch but he's one of our best players of the past few years. Pathetic.

Before the Newcastle game I was chatting to two 40 year plus season ticket holders from St James's park whilst having a beer. They were not going to renew their ST's precisely for the reasons outlined in previous comments. The stewards according to the lads at SJP were ordering people to sit down, stop shouting , no bad language on a regular basis or out you go ?
1.The Premier League is a global PRODUCT
2. Products like good marketing and squeaky clean imagery
3. Leaping about screaming" get into em" is by and large now frowned upon I believe
4. Do NOT tarnish said product with anything that can be construed to be vulgar or visually questionable
5. Tan wants his Burger Franchise to reflect the above
6. Tan wants people to be attracted to the above agenda (In red of course)

Where does this leave old/older football fans ? Largely speaking nowhere. I lost the plot with the referee Mariner recently, Arsenal I think, and was told to calm down.Equally my brother 58 was told off.If football is not passion then it is dead, plain and simple. So what do owners and the authorities want ? Money I feel and then some more and more whilst asking already stretched fans to pay 100 quid more - and there was me thinking inflation was below 5%.Ask Manchester United fans about Old Trafford -now that is a large library. In the 70's and 80's it was a snake pit with attitude. Now it is like a Womens Institute Jamboree.

Re: Worst atmosphere

Wed Feb 12, 2014 9:40 pm

I honestly had the best atmosphere I can recall.

I'm in 116 usually, but sneaked into 105 canton at kick off and we sang and chanted all game.
I really enjoyed it.

It sounds really loud while you,re in there, but I was telling others around me that I can't hear the canton singing from the Ninian usually.

It's definitely the acoustics .

My best enjoyment at a game in a long time.
Great humour and all behind the players.

The Ninian 116 and 117 is a sad end - simple as that.

Re: Worst atmosphere

Wed Feb 12, 2014 10:18 pm

Agree it wasn't very good at all for such an important game..

There are no excuse's we've have had some of The best atmospheres I've ever witnessed watching city at the CCS (Man city this year being the best we've had there), Leeds game at NP best ever!

When we played Man city we made a huge difference and really were the 12th man that day..

For some to say the team needs to play well for the supporters to sing is absolutely sh1t.. We should sing no matter what! derby
Fans out sung us the whole game a few years back at the CCS even tho we were up 4-0.. Real supporters!

The team really needs us to get behind them for the rest of the home games and if we can all come together like man city game we can make a difference..

Boys at the back of canton 104 don't stop singing......real supporters! :ayatollah:

Re: Worst atmosphere

Blown away by some of responses.

Who goes to football just to watch the football ffs ?? If you just wanted to sit there watching the football without a bit of banter a beer Etc you could watch it at home on the telly ?

Prob with atmosphere
1. Accoustics dont carry well, so even when a good few singing it sounds quiet.
2. You have to hear the away fans to create banter, difficult when in Canton stand
3. Sitting down
4. Plastics looking like you just landed from mars
5. Like minded too spread out, not in large groups like Ninian Park
6. Losing and constant drama - never an easy run for City fans
7. Lot of the old gaurd gone through rebrand and other reasons
8. Stewards
9. Modern fans
10. Lots of people who are not City fans but football fans

I don't buy the acoustics argument. You can clearly hear the away fans from the Canton stand so there's no excuse when the ninian is closer. Really makes me sad and sums up a good chunk of our current fanbase when some idiot perks up and asks, do you go to the football for the atmosphere?

Have to agree with the OP, our atmosphere at home is an embarrassment but yesterday was particularly bad. Why pay to sit a game in silence and look at those who try and starts chants and sing like f*cking aliens? f**k those fans, maybe a relegation will mean our fanbase gets cleansed of the plastics. It is happening as we speak, the Man Utd and Liverpool rats are jumping the drowning ship.

Win, Lose or Draw, get behind your team and sing your heart out and never boo or get on the backs of players, some stupid prick behind me with his Mrs (who chat the biggest load of shite about our players but never join in chants) had the nerve to attack Ben Turner constantly yesterday even though he was magnificent.

My heart sank yesterday at our lame response to the villa fans chnating 'this is a library' :( :o

You obviously didn't go to many game at NP over the years if that was the "the worst" ever" that you have witnessed. we have had far lower crowds consistently, far worse atmosphere consistently and far worse football in the past consistently. fans who spout off on here about how great it was, were either not there, not born or have poor memories!

I went to NP many times believe me and what we lacked in numbers the majority of the time we gained in passion and love for our club, most "fans" down the stadium now used to support united or Liverpool and don't have a clue about our club.

The amount of people saying "Who cares just watch the football" is sickening.

Yes. But the point is, there have been countless worse atmospheres at City games in the past other than the one you mentioned, so you either weren't there, weren't born, have a poor memory or to add another one talking bollocks.

Strange how he's calling long term fans 'plastic'!?
Wonder what his definition is? Must be a very angry man/trolling to get a ruck!
