Transfer News: Cardiff sign Norway forward Jo Inge Berget
Last Updated: 24/01/14 3:43pm
Cardiff have signed striker Jo Inge Berget, but boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says there is no deal yet for Wilfried Zaha.
And Wigan have confirmed that they have accepted a bid from two clubs - one of them Cardiff - for their defender Ivan Ramis.
New Bluebirds boss Solskjaer has already brought in midfielders Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli from Heerenveen and Molde respectively as he tries to put his stamp on the squad.
Berget will be re-united with Solskjaer, who was his boss at Norwegian club Molde - and where he also played with Eikrem and Moller Daehli.
The 23-year-old, who like his Norwegian compatriots shares an agent with Solskjaer, passed a medical on Thursday evening.
"Nothing's been concluded with anyone apart from the Norwegian lad, again, Jo Inge Berget," Solskjaer told Sky Sports News. "He's a forward, full international who only had four or five months of his contract left so he came here in a very good deal for us.

I'm really excited by this signing I must say. Good signing Ole!

I'm starting to realise that it's not so much about experience, obviously prem experience helps and if we sign messi there's no doubt he would succeed but some players style will just suite the prem no matter where they are from. I'm far happier signing a driven Norwegian that someone like ole believes will succeed than an egotistical idiot who won't do anything the like of which we find all over the English leagues.....

People are so obsessed with stats with no idea of his background, if he was playing a midfield role that's a decent strike rate.. Ole see's potential so let's hope for the best

Just a Norwegian randomly signing on to this forum. I have to say I am far more optimistic with all the Norwegian signings than most on you on this forum. Solskjaer has, because of his standing in Norway, signed some of the best talent from the country. It was a discussion in Norway after the success of the U-21 team taking 3rd place in Euro championship in Israel last summer... how to profit from this generation of players. The national coach more or less had to embrace some of the new promising players into the national team. Among them was Eikrem, Berget and Daehli, the two first of them scored against England U-21 in the European championship. All of them have great talent, question is more how fast they will adapt to the premiership than if they will succeed at one point in my opinion.
It was surprising how fast he made Molde play Man U style of football in Norway during his first season, and he won the league with a mid table/contender rated team. Expect technical, pacy football with great wing play from Solskjaer. From what I have seen of him he will move the team in the direction of Fergie style attacking football. He also brought 3 Senegalese talents to Molde shortly after his arrival. They had great talent and they created a great positive subgroup in Molde. I suspect he signs 3 from the same nationality with purpose. It helps with settling in, some great teams have done that in the past for an example that cross my mind is Milan with Dutch players.

thanks for the insight..i believe olle likes intelligent players, not headless chickens, it will take a couple of weeks but i expect to see attractive attacking football and i believe berget will be the partner campbell craves and needs. just need another winger (zaha if it evers happens) and a center back that passes through midfield instead of over it. Will he keep us in the premier league?? time will tell ,but he will have a good go by trying to win games, not by boring us to death. I hope he pulls it off, going to be a thrill ride till the end of season..

In Norwegian media it is stated that this was not a player OGS signed too boost the first team.
OGS has always said that JIB can become as good as he wants in his role. This purchase was too get a good squad player who COULD become a valuable first team member if he settles well.
Was also mentioned that OGS now had 3 players who are for the future (Eikrem too) but that he was now looking to get atleast 2 players with PL experience.
Im Norwegian and i dont feel comfy seeing so many Norwegians in the team. Dont want too see comments about Mini Norway if we go down.
But hopefully these 3 are players we can turn into something good and im sure that if we see them fail we haven`t spent tons on transfer fees or wages when we sell them.

Yeah I think Solskjaer likes intelligent players, because he was the intelligent type of player himself. My stomach feeling is that Cardiff will stay up in the Premiership because he creates positive atmosphere. And with all the new signings, well it creates energy. I just think, based upon nothing, that Cardiff will finish strong this season. Too many good players and the right motivation. Zaha is just the kind of wing player that fits into Solskjers formula by the way, pacy, creates trouble for the opposition.

You could argue JIB is a squad player. But he has had his moments, like when he scored and sent England U-21 out of the European Championship and when he scored against way Basel way and almost sent Molde to the Group stage of Champions League.. had it not been for the wasted penalty in the dying minutes of the match. He is also the well rounded player can do well at most aspects of the game, and because of that play in both midfield and forward roles. What I am trying to say is that this signing is most likely a bargain for the price and you get a talented, versatile player that can be a big match player. As Jan Aage Fjoertot put it on twitter: "talented player, must take the next level"

One more comment, he is the perfect 4-5-1 in an attacking midfield role. I just understand why that was attractive for the manager. I am not that biased, I am actually turning into a Cardiff supporter (ex ManU maybe)

Reasons for buying:
Jo Inge Berget - big game goals ( se previous posts), well rounded versatile, talent, best youth eduction you can get from Oslo (NTG - fotball focus 15-17), experience from Italy, cheap almost out of contract. He is not a typical goal poacher, and he is not proven premiership quality.
Mats Moeller Daehli - one of the greatest talent ever from Norway, great ball control, decision making, experience from Man U youth system, voted ahead of A.Januzay as the player of the year in Man U youth academy, just another level Messi, Silva etc. you name it, just this kid just need confidence and to become a MAN.
Magnus Eikrem - best rated player in the league in Norway by largest newspaper one of the championship years for Molde. Scored against England U-21 in European Championship and it was almost a question of time before he went abroud, and it was to Marco Van Bastens Hereenveen . Consistent player, raised in Man U youth system. Ole was lucky to snatch him.
As Ole said, these are international players. Main concern is their performance this season, not the future.

Berget was often involved when Molde created something, playing the central attacking midfield role in the preferred 4231 (or the attacking midfielder in a 4411 if you will). I rated him the most when Molde had the opportunity to plat fast counter attacking football. And he obviously knows how Solskjær wants him to play, having been signed by Solskjær when he came to Molde (another similarity between Berget, Dæhli and Eikrem).
He has been prasied in national media, and has been picked for the national team a few times - though only in january training matches, where mostly players from the national league has been picked. Have been a regular with the U21 national team the last few years, a team that surprinsingly enough both qualified for the Euro U21 in 2013, knocked England out of the competition and progressed to the next stage.
Still, I am rather surprised to have him going to the Premier League at this point. That will be a huge step up, a step I admit I am not convinced he will make. Hope I'm wrong.
Having brought all the staff and a number of "Molde"-players over, the only thing missing is switching back to blue and white - Molde's colours

I truly believe that the Januray transfer window won't be the reason that Cardiff stays up. If you guys didn't already have a good enough bunch of players to make it, it will be championship football next season. Not that it will be the end of the world - the Cardiff players need premiership experience, and you could se this as a learning process in a 5-year plan.
I just wanted to comment - like many other Norwegians apparently - on these norwegian youngsters OGS has signed. I think it is quite obvious that OGS is getting players with great work ethics, moral and ambition. I am, like most here on the forum, a sceptic optimist regarding the potential of Eikrem and Berget. Daehli is a different story.
Eikrem is, imo, the one to challenge for the starting lineup right off the bat. Mainly because he has proven himself on a higher level than the other guys, and were mid-season when he left Herenveen. Berget is a hard call to make. He's really well rounded and versatile, but still lacking in consistency, finishing skill and strength (like most players taking that leap to PL football). Mats Daehli though, I have to be congratulating all Cardiff fans on signing. I know it's typical to be the most optimistic with the youngest guy, but I really, truly believe he has got what it takes to develop into a key player. I've followed his career closely the last few years, and he seems to take every level with exceptional ease. He was a breath of fresh air at Molde, with a silky touch, glue on his boots, incredible vision and passing skills. He was the player in Norwegian Tippeligaen with the highest passing accuracy, and very few ball losses. When he made his national debut (off the bench), I instantly got that same feeling as in Molde. Though the level was way higher, he had a presence on the field that took my breath away. Therefore, I think he could be a true game-changer at Cardiff sooner rather than later. I can't wait to hear your impressions of his first minutes of Premier League football. One word: Wonderkid. Wait and see.
Fingers crossed for Cardiff City in the next PL matches! My money will be on Cardiff in the Man Utd clash - I believe it's written in the books that OGS will take points when returning to Old Trafford. I mean, you have no pressure what so ever.
