Whats on the plate and why us it so high that you need to step up to it.
Nothing on the plate and it's not high, it's on the ground. The term is pinched from American Baseball where they used to use a plate for the home base back in the 1800's, so when going in to bat you 'stepped up to the plate'.

"He's not that sort of player" After a bad tackle. I remember Martinez being the biggest culprit of this after that Callum Mcmanaman challenge last season.
It is a terrible way to worm out of saying it was a bad tackle and he deserved the card.

Another one of mine is to "link up with"...
"Xyz will link up with the England squad on Tuesday".
It's like bad business speak straight out of a corporate meeting room. And every pundit and commentator seems to use it...

Baseball term. The plate is where the batter stands.

It's been a long, hard season. Yes, the same length as last season, the one before and the one before that...
Also - maybe not football sayings but I hate when they interview thick footballers and they can't think of anything to say so they just say 'you know' every 2 seconds. Like we're supposed to know what they mean.

When they refer to a player who "served his time" or is "plying his trade"
I served my time, in industry on CRAP wages, not overpaid, pampered knocking a ball around.
Also when they refer to "the Man Utd's, the Arsenal's the Chelsea's" in the plural, they do it with players as well, "the Alan Shearer's, the Van Nistlrooy's, the Ronaldo's" Aaaarrrgghhh, there's only Fooking one of them!!!
Jamie Redknapp uses both these sayings often.
