Born and bred Cardiff --Splott--Rumney--Ely--Canton ---but unless you can afford to buy a house in the nicer areas ie Llanishen, Cyncoed, Rhiwbina, Lakeside, Lisvane ,Heath, Llandaff --then its all gone down hill

Three reasons

1 Crime Rate--had my house broken into twice car three times shed once and crazed un inisured motorist smashing into my house/Car also dont feel safe me or my daughters walking anywhere south of City Centre

2. Trafiic/Parking ---getting ridiculous queues everywhere all day 1 hour to get onto town and back 2 miles away .Parking fees ridiculous.

3. Immigration-- sorry to say but the open door policy has ruined the fabric of society in large areas Cardiff -- lack of integration, community spirit etc--Just want things back like they were in the 60s 70 s 80s --- when we valued and were at one with the community we lived in.

Moving 20 miles away --nicer house but cheaper and a real communtiy spirit

This is happening all over the UK it has been termed as "White Flight" although that is not a totally acurate phrase.

While I respect your reasons for moving..if I may suggest:

1-Cardiff's crime rate is comparatively low compared to most UK cities, and European cities. I agree though, moving out of a city will generally result in lower crime

2-Parking can be a pain, but with respect, if you live in Canton and drive to town, you aren't IN traffic, you ARE traffic. The buses in Canton are very good and it's a relatively short walk. I don't know your circumstances, but more people should be walking.

3-Cardiff has always been a city of immigrants. Always. We had the first mosque in the UK. As soon as the docks developed we became multi-racial. There will be very very few people on here who's family has been here longer than supposed 'immigrant' families.

I'm not downplaying what you say, but I think Cardiff as cities go is far from the worst examples of what you mention.

Exactly. We are a city of immigrants. Always have been.

You have good people and bad people. Simple as that, where they are from is irrelevant. I do have some issues with non-moderate islam, but many muslim immigrants are escaping the extremists themselves.

Moved from Splott to Blackwood in the 90's, Blackwood is a much nicer place. :ayatollah:

Re: Areas of Cardiff

I would not live anywhere else. All areas have good and bad and that includes the rest of Wales.
Some of Llanrumney is a bit :o and other parts are ok.

Same as ely, trowbridge, pentwyn, butetown and other areas.

agree nowt wrong with llanrumney shinyblue

a tough and hard place but with some good friends over there make it a good community spirit

now borley has the keys to the llanrumney hall hopefully make it a place for the locals to use it for good causes

I read somewhere that at the turn of the century in 1899/1900 Cardiff Bay Area was the most diverse cosmopolitan area in the world mainly due to the shipping, coal and the docks in general. This era set the city up to become what it is today, unique in Wales and the UK.

I was born in Grangetown in the (early) 60s, and lived there and canton for 35 years. The areas mentioned by the op were rough as a bulldogs arse then and have been gradually deteriorating ever since.

Still the only city in the UK I'd choose to live in though

Re: Areas of Cardiff

Sun Nov 03, 2013 9:13 am

Most of what's been said in this thread is bollocks.
I'm a taxi driver in this city and due to my trade union work within the tgwu (now unite) I had contact with taxi drivers all over the country.
I can honestly say that Cardiff is the only big city that has absolutely no no go areas for taxi drivers, that tells you something in itself.
Somebody said no community spirit in some of the more affluent areas, that's rubbish too as these areas have some of the most thriving community centres and pubs throughout the city.
As for immigration, that's what built this city to what it is.
In government indexes its the best City in the country for students to come and study.
As a Capital city we have all of the cultural advantages that go with that with great places to visit within the city, not to mention over 100 parks also.
There's plenty there to be proud of and I am.
If you can find a better city to live in than ours then good luck to you.

Re: Areas of Cardiff

I left wales in the late 1970's and returned for a short spell in 82 after my military service and then left again in 83 to find work. Nowadays, I return to visit family and watch games these days. Cardiff has changed, when I was watching city in the 70's and 80's I didn't much notice immigration. However, since New Labour's 'deliberate mass immigration policy parts of the city are like walking through Islamabad. I do notice a significant amount of women wearing hijabs walking to and fro the city centre. I'm not going to go on about the great benefits these immigrants bring  ,but I have little doubts that we've created future problems as we've already seen in London.
I blame all three parties for this, but it was Labour who opened the flood gates further. Many of us moan about immigration, however, we haven't seen nothing yet, it's our kids and theirs that are yet to see the real results of this policy of insanity and self destruction! My advice is to use your vote wisely in the future. If you are concerned about it, like many of us are, then change your voting habits. Millions more are coming next year from Bulgaria and Romania - wonderful isn't it
Talk about voting for your own demise, that's what most have been doing for the past 30 years!

I think being a taxi driver and living in an area are 2 different things ? And wasnt tremorfa a no go area for taxis not too long ago.

But Cardiff is a safe City overall compared to Birmingham London Etc.
