Don't get me wrong the years of memories far outweigh the sadness of today but right now it is so raw I am struggling to have a conversation about her without tears.

I know like losing a family member or anyone close to you does get easier with time, we are going to make a photo montage of her.

Glenn we have had 15 years of great memories with her and I know we were lucky with her, never had many trips to the vet, she was never a hindrance, only ever a loving pet.

Carl, tough time Mate never easy, I am in the same situation I think my dog has had a stroke, I am taking her to the vets Monday morning for blood tests and a scan, looks like I will miss my first game tomorrow can't bare the thought of leaving her on her own, thankfully she doesn't appear to be suffering just lifeless and doesn't want to be bothered.

I'm dreading having to go through it again with my 2 cats, even more so for my girlfriend because she's never been in this situation.

Fully feel for you and your family, especially the kids, and other pets who won't understand where their companion has gone.

We had our dog cremated, we felt it was the best option to have him home

That is sad James.

I think bringing her home is the right thing to do too.

Of course you want them home, house does feel emptier without him about though when I visit

It really is hard to take. People who say its only a dog must have never had the pleasure of bonding with a
mans most loyal and best freind.

We lost our boxer in June and i still look for her every morning. House feels empty without her crazy ways.

Best wishes Carlos

A dog is part of the family, and its a horrible thing to have to put a pet to sleep. We had three over a period of about forty years. Each time it's just as, if not more, difficult. Time can heal, but in the meantime, a family needs time and space to mourn. My sympathies to all your family, Carl.

Ive always been a cat lover but it doesent matter if its a cat, dog or whatever, they are still like family. I lost my Siamese cat which was the runt of the litter and only had half a tail to F.I.P a year ago last july 4th. I called him Malky after our manager and he was as special a cat as Malky is a manager and thats saying something. I only had him the few months of his short life and it left me absolutely gutted!

My heart goes out to you as I know how you feel. My condolences.

That's right, cat, dog it's always as difficult and as Annis says, often like a member of the family.

Sad reading this thread. Also comforting knowing im not alone in my dread of when the time comes for my Staffie Cross Max who is ten and at the moment is snuggled up next to me in bed. Feel for Carl and his family but as usual on this board there still remains good posters who can really help in these situations. Really feel my eyes welling over this as it isnt just a dog , or never understood the term. You wouldn't treat a dog like this. To be honest if we was all treated like most dogs we would have an amazing life.
RIP FURBY

Carl, that is one of the reasons why I won't have another dog, the heartbreak is too much for any dog lover but to lose a dog after so many years and becomes part of your family is like losing a member of your family. I had a German Shepherd named Prince, we had him from 6 weeks old and he grew up with my daughter and then the other kids came along so really speaking he was one of the kids, (I'm sure you know what I mean Carl), then when we were due to emigrate to Tenerife I obviously made provisions to take him to Tenerife with us but when I went to the vet he told me that Prince would not survive the journey, German Shepherds have a history of poor back legs and Prince's legs were bad and getting worse but not only that he had other problems within his body. I had to leave him home with my mother in law while we jetted off for a new life. He didn't last long after that and I kick myself for not taking the chance to take him with us as the vet could have been wrong, (I will never Know). It was like losing a child.
Sorry Carl for your loss as I know exactly how you feel. Hope Alison and Angharad are ok.

I lost my Kaiser, Clumber Spaniel in July to cancer aged six. The heart ache and pain was really hard and totally feel for you.
However, when your a dog family you need a replacement which makes the pain you have lost become a loving memory.
Our Rhodesian Ridgeback arrived last Saturday, of course is name is Blu. Hence, total puppy nightmare, but he is making the loss of my beloved Kaiser a lot easier to take in?

Really sorry to hear this Carl as I know from experience the emotions your feeling right now.

We lost our Charlie a Cocker Spaniel back in July, he had suffered a kidney failure, we were in Orlando on holidays at the time and my daughter was looking after him, but when we heard he had taken a turn for the worse we were straight on a plane home the following day, glad we got to see him at the vets before he had to be put to sleep, very heart breaking and still think about him and miss him.

Dogs become very much a part of your family life and they have there very own individual ways like any person would have.

Sorry to hear the sad news Carl. Losing a much loved family dog is an awful experience.

I had my 15yr old Bull Terrier put to sleep 5yrs ago this week and it broke my heart. I still fill up when I think about him but the sadness is quickly replaced by a smile as you recall the good times and the happy memories.

Having to make the final decision for what is your best mate is a terrible position to find yourself in. In your head you know you've done the right thing as you wouldn't want Furby to suffer. But our hearts don't want to lose or let go to something so precious. Carl, I feel for you I really do. Dreading the day I say goodbye to my Boxer who's 8yrs. If you haven't had a tear in your eye watching Marley and Me there must be something wrong with you.
Wishing you and the family all the best.

RIP Furby.

I've never had a dog but I had a guinea pig for 6 years until he passed away in the summer holidays. It really does make a difference when a pet passes away.

Feel for you carl, I've had to have two dogs put down, both with the same thing, a tumour in the nose. The first time I was young and stayed home but wrenched my gut all the same. Second time the dog was less a family pet more my best friend me and max grew up together and had a bond that none of my family shared with him. He started to sneeze a lot which was a symptom Charlie (the first dog) had. He got diagnosed but there was nothing to be done. He started to go grey (never seen that before in a dog but it made him look distinguished haha) and blood would trickle from his nose. He even became depressed which was hard to take, looking at a dog that was once so full of life. The time came where he was in too much pain to carry on so we took him to get put down. Cant lie i was in my late teens but watching him fade away was the worst thing I've ever felt and it brought me to my knees in tears.

a dog gives you unconditional love and asks for very little in return.
you will get over the loss, but the memory will last for ever.

Losing a pet is truly awful experience , I've lost 2 old boys aged 15 and 16 , and it knocked the stuffing out of our family , time helps , as do good understanding people like the previous posters !
I also picked up on 'Rainbow Bridge ' , no link , just google it , I still do ,and it brings everything flooding back .
Got 2 greyhound girls now , so I reckon I've got to do it all again , twice , but dogs are worth it , they need our support and help and as long as there's breath in me , they'll get it. . :ayatollah:
