mayweather would have graced any era .i think lennox lewis would be at the top of the heavyweight pile.very hard to judge by comparison but ali and the likes were light compared to the heavyweights of today.would ali baulk up and maybe lose some speed?who knows?would lennox dance round foreman all night and school him?or would he get tagged like so many?some great fighters mentioned tho

Jim Wilde pound for pound. Only 7 1/2 stone. Lot of American boxing experts have rated him one of the best.

Now if there ever was a myth then it was Joe Calzaghe. He was a clumsy fighter with an ungainly slap of a punch, he also clearly lost that Bernard Hopkins fight but on the whole dominated a pretty awful weight category.

Wouldn't call being able to fight fighters like Winky Wright,Hopkins,Jones Jnr an awful division fighter.
These fights could've been made a lot earlier in his career but sadly his manager was a greedy c**t who wouldn't travel.

To the posters throwing names like Wilde,Norton and smokey Joe, its easy when your looking at things in hindsight.
But I drew that list up on just memories of watching old fights and browsing old ring magazines.

I have already said I've missed out some great fighters, but they weren't done out of spite or because I didn't rate them its just o couldn't think of every fighter there has ever been.

Several eras have been represented and this list was composed at work where I was unable to use google or any other search engine.

Instead of throwing names out why not put your own list up if you feel you know better or completetly disagree with my list.

calzaghe will never be giving all time great status simply because of politics in the game and fact like shinobipony mentioned that his manager wouldn't travel, behind the ropes on sky joe mentioned he wanted the fights but could never come to an agreement on both sides, he can only beat what was put in front of him but sadly they wasn't the fights that should of made him a global superstar, he had the talent to do it aswell but boxing is a greedy game you need to know how to play it, you see a lot of good talented boxers be inactive for a long time due to politics or being avoided for reputation, we will never get a lot of mega fights like in the past, nobody wants to lose that 0 so they will be padded for aslong as they can.

Spot on. Calzaghe is vastly overrated, especially by the Welsh. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching Joe because he let off combinations and it was interesting to see if others could unlock him due to him being a pretty much straight up fighter with straights and the jab. He is however, nowhere near an all time great.

Hopkins was on his last legs, he was 43 years old and still beat Calzaghe in reality and Roy Jones was also a 40 year old on a come back trail.

He was and is not a great or anywhere near.

Last legs? What is Hopkins now?

I'm not talking about when Joe faced them I am talking when he should've faced them.

Hi Shino, The thing is I can't really knock your selection as I know only too well that boxers from yesteryear can not be compared to each other. I do however believe that Jimmy Wilde should take a place in your top 5. Not just because of his record which is phenominal but because I also became a massive fan of his also after speaking with his family, reading up about him and listening to the Great Burt Sugar say that Pound for pound he was in HIS top 3 of all time. That was good enough for me. Had Joe louis not retired he would have been the greatest ever without question, had Roberto Duran stayed at featherweight im sure he himself would have come close but its all irrelevant. Your selection is very good but I maintain that for me at least ....Jimmy Wilde will always be in MY top 5
