What baggage? As you say AND the fiasco last year..... I take it you are referring to QPRGate? Im sure he would have had some bad advice there from an agent? So apart from that - what is this extra baggage you are referring to? I think at £2.25m he is a top buy for us, dont know about all this hype of a bad attitude? Apart from the qpr fiasco not sure what else he has done wrong? Can you enlighten me? Cheers.

I was referring to the mental baggage caused by the acute embarrassment least year, and the subsequent isolation he was so publicly made to endure as a result.

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay delighted to land striker Peter Odemwingie
2 Sep 2013 23:59
The 32-year-old frontman becomes Malky Mackay’s eighth and final signing of the summer as the Bluebirds look to continue their good start to life in the Premier League.

Cardiff City boosted their attacking options with the £2.5m deadline day signing of Peter Odemwingie from West Brom.

The 32-year-old frontman becomes Malky Mackay’s eighth and final signing of the summer as the Bluebirds look to continue their good start to life in the Premier League.

Odemwingie was in the Welsh capital for his medical yesterday and then put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the option of another year.

He will now join up with his new teammates who return to action after the international break with a big trip to Hull.

“I’m delighted to sign a player with a proven record of scoring in the Premier League,” said Mackay.

“Peter’s record speaks for itself.

“He’s versatile, got great pace and does bring us that bit of experience we need.

“He’s an outstanding footballer at Premier League level, an intelligent footballer with a bit of guile.

“I spent a lot of time with him and he’s an intelligent and thoughtful person too.

“For the price we have got him for it is a great deal for Cardiff City Football Club.”

At 32, Odemwingie also provides welcome experience in the Bluebirds dressing room, with Mackay adding: “I think that was important, particularly in our forwards department.

What do you know about Peter Odemwingie? Take our quiz now

“We lost Heidar Helguson in the summer and he was a good presence for us.

“I think Peter can do the same thing for us now, pass on a bit of his experience.

“He may be 32, but he’s a very fit lad.

“I was with him at his medical and it became very obvious what good physical shape he is in.”

Odemwingie gained notoriety in January when he drove to Queens Park Rangers’ Loftus Road ground believing a transfer from the Baggies was imminent.

He ended up being sent away when it emerged West Brom had not given QPR permission to speak to him.

Mackay said that incident did not concern him at all, saying: “It was simply that someone thought they were going to get a job at one place and then didn’t.

“There’s very little more to it than that.

“We did our usual research on the player, we talked to coaches he has worked with and players he has played with – they all came back without a bad word to say about him.

“All the reaction was very complimentary.

“He’s going to prove an asset for Cardiff City of that I’ve no doubt.”

Since that transfer deadline day in January Odemwingie, who was born in Tashkent in Uzbekistan, has gone on to make just seven appearances for the Baggies without finding the net.

But his time at The Hawthorns overall has been impressive in terms scoring goals, Odemwingie managing 30 in 87 Premier League appearances in three seasons.

He began his playing career in Nigeria and has won 55 caps for the African nation, scoring nine goals, and a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics.

At club level Odemwingie left Nigeria in 2002 and signed for Belgian club La Louviere before joining Lille and helping the French side into the knockout stages of the Champions League.

West Brom secured his signature in August 2010 from Lokomotiv Moscow and he has since showed his capability to play out wide or through the middle.

Meanwhile, Bluebirds defender Andrew Taylor believes Cardiff’s home form will prove vital this season.

Taylor, who is yet to taste Premier League defeat after missing the opening game at West Ham, also believes Cardiff’s promising start to the season could be a sign of things to come.

The left-back, who played for Middlesbrough in the top flight before signing for the Bluebirds two years ago, is adamant Mackay’s men can make it seven points from four matches by winning their next encounter at fellow new boys Hull.

“We are certainly feeling confident and have the belief as a team we can go up there and win,” said Taylor on the back of Cardiff taking four points from home games against Manchester City and Everton.

“It’s going to be tough and Hull fans will be up for it, but we will, as always, set out to win.

“Our home form will be crucial and we have started this season in the right way with four points from two games.

“It was a hard-earned point against Everton and the clean sheet was just what we needed.

“Defensively we looked solid as a team over the 90 minutes.

“Peter Whittingham playing in front of me down the left, was fantastic throughout the match against Everton, while Craig Bellamy doubled up with Matthew Connolly to get the job done on their side.

“We had Aron (Gunnarsson) and Gary (Medel) ratting in front of the back four, breaking things up when Everton had possession and man-of-the-match David Marshall in goal behind us.

“It was a fantastic performance and we’ll go out looking to produce more of the same at Hull on Saturday week.”

Peter Odemwingie expressed his joy after completing his deadline-day move to Cardiff.

It was understood that the striker had been undergoing a medical in south Wales ahead of a reported £2.5million move from West Brom after his spell in the midlands turned sour.

And 45 minutes after the transfer window had officially closed, the Nigerian Tweeted: "Absolutely delighted to be joining Cardiff City FC ! Can't wait to hear the famous Cardiff fans roar ! I promise GOALS !!!"

The 32-year-old, who was also reportedly on Swansea's radar during the summer transfer window, has not been training with the Baggies this season after falling out of favour at The Hawthorns.

Odemwingie hit the headlines in January after driving to QPR on deadline day to close a deal, but the move fell apart as West Brom refused to accept their bid.

He told BBC Sport: "It's a fresh start, a whole new beginning.

"I've joined a club with a strong determination to achieve their goals.

"Cardiff City showed great intent to bring me here. I have to thank the manager and everyone involved in making this transfer happen.

"There are talented and dedicated players in the team, everyone is moving in the right direction and I also want to make a strong contribution as well."

Odemwingie signed for the Baggies from Lokomotiv Moscow for an undisclosed fee in 2010 and has scored 30 goals in 87 games for the Barclays Premier League club before his stunt earlier this year meant his days with Steve Clarke's side were numbered.

The Nigerian will become Malky Mackay's eighth summer signing for the Bluebirds' maiden Premier League campaign as he joins Andreas Cornelius, John Brayford, Simon Moore, Steven Caulker, Gary Medel, Maximiliano Amondarain and Kevin Theophile-Catherine at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The Nigerian forward had been linked with moves to Swansea and Stoke during the transfer window but Malky Mackay has won the race for the 32-year-old, who has signed a two-year deal after the £2.5million move. Odemwingie becomes Cardiff's eighth new signing since their promotion to the Premier League and will provide added firepower. During his three-year spell at West Brom he scored 30 goals in the top flight and Mackay will be hoping he can replicate that form in south Wales. Odemwingie's future at the Hawthorns had been subject to speculation since the last transfer window when he tried to force a move to QPR. That move never materialised and when he returned to West Brom he was dropped to the bench and received a mixed reaction from the home crowd. He said he was thrilled to have made the move. "I'm delighted to complete my move to Cardiff City. I'm looking forward to this fresh start at a club that is really going places, a team that's progressing fast," Odemwingie told the club's website. "My father-in-law is a City fan and he's told me what a great club this is. I'm looking forward to meeting up with the boys and then start preparing for the trip to Hull after the international break. "I've seen a little bit of the city and I know that my wife and I will really enjoy living in Cardiff. I can't wait to get started - this move makes me very happy."

The £2.5m striker has been desperate to escape since his infamous drive to London in a failed bid to engineer a move to QPR on deadline day in January.

“I missed football and I am delighted to come to a fast-progressing team,” he said.

“They have a young manager with a lot of ambition.

“He has done really well in a short period and I hope to help the team become better. I am grateful for the confi dence they have shown in me.

“I am very motivated and ready for action.”
