Cardiff City are closing in on the signature of Sevilla defensive midfielder Gary Medel, according to reports in Spain.
A fee in the region of 13 million euros has been quoted by local media in Seville.
And it is claimed the Bluebirds took the opportunity to continue negotiations with Sevilla as the Andalusian side ran out 3-1 winners over Manchester United at Old Trafford for Rio Ferdinand's testimonial on Friday.
The 51-cap Chilean international is nicknamed 'El Pitbull' and is famed for his destructive playing style in La Liga.
But he has received cult status for a series of star man-marking performances versus Barcelona magician Lionel Messi in La Liga encounters.
His no-nonsense approach has, however, often seen him in hot water with footballing authorities.
Back in April, the 26-year-old notched up his seventh red card in less than 90 games for Sevilla after joining from Boca Juniors in 2011.
Medel had been linked with a move to Everton last month with new manager Roberto Martinez said to be an admirer.
But according to fresh reports it is Cardiff who look in the driving seat to secure his services.
When asked by local media to comment on any prospective move to South Wales, Medel's agent, Fernando Felicevich remained coy but optimistic.
He is quoted saying: “No I can give many details. You have to wait. I don’t like to publicly give the data…"
