Im from newport

My dad used to take me to watch both, never enjoyed the county games but the buzz i got from the city games was on a different level.

Eddie Mays Barmy Army!!

Then as a ternager had zero interest in county and it was always cardiff. First season ticket at 14 and one ever since. Its not where your from, its what you fall in love with. Always be cardiff for me

Sorry mate the reality I that not a lot of people outside of Newport give a shit about you.
Cwmbran is blue.... Only a couple of county lads in oakfield are regulars and a couple of them follow Sunderland and Liverpool as there second clubs.
Maybe I'm still a bit bitter, had many a run in with your lads over he years ziggy wine bar, stowaway etc had mates caught up in he hall of fame incident as well.
Good game lad's you had , as much that It pains me to say.
That years gone by, but still. Can't see me being made welcome if I walked into Rodney parade.
Or would they welcome any football fan regardless of football club.
Btw my old man's county through and through.

I'm from Cwmbran , now live in Newport and used to help run RAMs buses in the area ( Eastern Alliance)
I can tell you there are loads from Gwent that support the City.
It's no different to fans from Port Talbot or Neath supporting the City.

newport is a 70s liverpool era, children follow there dads, nothing wrong in supporting the bluebirds only 10 minutes up the road :ayatollah:

It's all banter lads, and if you're a Cardiff fan from Newport, you don't have to justify that to me. That's your thing. Prefer that over the Man Utd's, Liverpool's, etc. But I would love us to stuff you. ;)

Newport are League Two now, so it's not like we are a million miles away from Swansea and Cardiff in Footballing terms anymore. Also, I noticed our support has rapidly grown, and that's great. Some Cardiff fans seem to forget that Newport County went bust, and the fans formed their own club, so naturally we feel quite strongly for a club that WE created. Newport do a lot of community work, but as I said, due to resources we are limited to within our city limits. We do must support from outside of Newport of course, and I've noticed in MARSHFIELD a few months ago there was like 10 kids playing, 2 with CCFC tops on, 4 with NCAFC tops on, which made me smile. It's nice to see a future for our club. We are League Two, and it hasn't quite sunk in yet, but tomorrow it will do.

I have noticed a lot of "ex-Cardiff City" fans coming over Rodney Parade. They haven't stayed though, they don't quite understand the hatred Newport County has for Cardiff. The only lot over in CF who can relate are the 70's and 80's lot who would have had running battles with our lot. Old times. But, I think if we met in the FA Cup a lot of Cardiff fans would soon grasp the game is a "big deal" as soon as Newport sell out the game - either home or away - and probably extra 'Heddlu' rolling about.

I'm over the moon for yourselves and the Jacks, and it's great for Welsh Football. But, keep looking down on us Cardiff City fans, but "lil" Newport aren't soo "lil" anymore. ;)

Cwmbran inbred, cheeky c&#t! Ive watched Newport a few times recently working away but have always been city. If youre from outside of the port you just have to choose (cwmbran town not an option)and Newport have lost a generation to city during the exile etc. Still good to see you back in the league.

What are your expectations for the season mate? Stay in the league for the first season or mount a promotion challenge? How's your squad looking and have you signed any new players?

You attendances in 70's & early 80's were boosted by Cardiff fans that did not travel away, I know because my dad used to take me to Somerton Park occasionally

Personally I don't give a toss about Newport, glad you got promoted but our rivals have traditionally been Bristol City & Rovers along with the Jacks.

I moved to Duffryn 14 years ago and have been a city fan for 32 years as I originaly lived in Blackwood.
The amount of townies having a go at me for supporting city instead of county is unreal, it's the general banter of my local pub.
"You should be supporting county livinng in Newport" is the norm to which I reply with "listen to my accent you thick twats, I'm not a townie, BUTT".

Newport thinks very highly of themselves. You've never been considered a serious rival of Cardiff! You claim to fame is turning up in a meaningless competition where we had no interest.

Hardly something to shout about but, each to their own ;)

All about banter kid. ;) Oakfield is just as bad as Ringland. I'm lucky I live in a posh part of Newport - yes, it actually exists! ;) Back in the 80's we had a huge rivalry with Cardiff City so I've been told. Alot of the 80's County lot went missing for 10 years and have only just popped up now, guess they couldn't bare to watch us in Non-League. We've done alright for ourselves, and seeing as we still have the "fan-power", we hope to smash Swansea City aside with their version, and of course we've already done Wrexham - on a sunny day at Wembley. 8-) Cardiff City lads know that Newport County's lot are nothing to turn your nose up at. Wales away days, Cardiff City have even been out-numbered, true story! Still though, be nice if more Jacks came to Wales away days. Probably because you 'orrible bastards.

so you werent even there to see newport county in their heyday and their demise?
remember newport county didnt even play anywhere near newport for some time which would have lost almost a whole generation of potential supporters, coupled with increased games on sky its been tough going
hope you win saturday

Im Cardiff born and bred, but Been working in the Newport area for the best part of twenty years and my first marriage was with a Newport girl and my two sons are Newport born and bred. But have never got why most County fans have so much hatred for us. I've supported City since I was 10 in 1979 and went to my first away games at Somerton Park in the 82/83 season, the first game was in the Welsh Cup and the next in the league on Easter Monday, the crowd at Somerton was over 16k, we lost both 1-0 :( , but even back then I never noticed any big rivalry, maybe it's because I've never been a lad and was never voluntarily involved in aggro? Also, I was at Ninian Park late in the 87/88 season in your last league season and you never even took 500 fans to Ninian. I know things were really bad for County back then, but less than 500 fans for a local derby is quite frankly pathetic.
Despite the animosity shown by County fans toward us, I wish County all the best back in the League, I got some friends who support them and despite its bad press, I quite like the Port as a place. I think they'll do quite well.

We've only played you 6 times in the league since the war, and only lost 1 of them !

The rivalry is completely 1-sided, no-one apart from a small group from Cardiff who used to fight with a group of your lot gives a monkeys. In fact a fair few City fans see you as a 2nd club. Certainly the majority (those who don't realise how anti-Cardiff a lot of your fans are) were pleased you went up.

For the majority of our fans you don't even come on the radar.

Given City are in the premiership now I'd expect a fair few more from Newport to come to see a top level club.

For my sins I also live in Newport but support CCFC. County fans are jealous of Cardiff and that's why there is such a one way rivalry amongst their fans. Don't get me wrong I hope NCFC do well and admire the way they reformed and progressed up the leagues but there is a glass ceiling on how high realistically they can go (League 1 tops).

Cardiff v Newport is just like west ham v orient or Chelsea v brentford.

Re: Cardiff City fans from Newport

Fri Aug 02, 2013 4:43 pm

See a lot of you saying "I don't think there's a rivalry" etc aren't from Cardiff. In fact, the distance between Cardiff and Newport city centre's are closer than Cardiff City FC and your home, so you can't really speak for the people of Cardiff. I know at Welsh League level when say; Cardiff Grange Harlequins play Newport YMCA (Cardiff sides and Newport sides) there's usually a flair up and city-rivalry. I know most people in Cwmbran can't stand the 'City next door' named Newport, that gets everything (Ryder Cup, Boxing Venue modified, Gwent Dragons, etc), but lets face it, your shopping scene ruins ours. There's your one-up. But it does my head in when a Cwmbran lad (a lot do this) calls Newport County shite, yet supports Cardiff... Just seems a bit odd. There's a valid reason, but IF Newport County stay in the league for at least 5 years, being a Cardiff fan from Cwmbran/Newport might start being; "oh, here's another glory hunter." Hope not, because I like the banter with the "Cardiff lot" who aren't technically "Cardiff". I remember your FA Cup Final build up, thought it was class by BBC. They shown how you draw support from all other the Welsh Valleys, and I know Swansea City do out West. I don't think Newport will ever have that, no matter our success as we tend to distance ourselves from the valleys.

Expectations; I'm probably like a lot of you Cardiff fans in the respect, big new league, want to stay up first of all! The press and other League 2 fans fancy us to creep into top 8 due to decent backing and new signings. I personally think mid-table (11th), but I'd really just want us to stay up. Nice to be playing Portsmouth, Plymouth Argyle and of course Bristol Rovers (which will be tasty). ;)

Defo not more Cardiff City fans in Newport though, that's a silly thing to say.

Goldie Lookin' Chain and "Newport Bouncers" doesn't help. There's rougher places to be, but Newport is full of characters. That's what happens when you mix Taffies and Bristolians.

Tim, in total we've played County a total of 20 times, all in the 30's and 80's (League games). Another reason why I've never really understood their hatred towards us. We've played Liverpool in the league more than them and we haven't played Liverpool in the league since the 59/60 season!

After a few days away last season I travelled back by train for a saturday game. I was amazed at how many people in CCFC shirts etc got on at Newport. I never knew we had such a large amount of support from there.

Good luck to County though , they haven't been our rivals since they went bust and for me , their new club isn't the same. I hope this club prospers (and I would never have said that about the club that went out of existence).

To people in NEWPORT - Cardiff City are just a bunch of Taff's. Don't forget, when Newport played Weston-Super-Mare, you're lads played Bristol City and a few of your "Valley Rams" took a pasting - which they arranged ironically. We don't particularly have good links with Swansea City either.
