Proven goalscorer. Would be a fantastic signing.

Bent, for me, has always missed just as many chances as he scores, including some real howlers. Besides, we've got more than enough firepower.

Because reading this thread campbell, maynard and rudy are just as good apparently

For a newly promoted side to land a provwn goalscorer like Bent would be a major coup.

Dont worry about it though people on this forum didnt want Berbatov either. Wasnt a Malky type player apparently. :laughing5:

Whoever said about Berbatov is a strange ole' person!

However, I can't personally see Bent adding another great to us.. I do expect another striker. Don't get be wrong, I would be happy with Cardiff signing Bent but Luc Castaignos would be a better addition in my eyes. He may not have any experience in the Premiership but he has Serie A experience with Inter and Dutch Premier experience with Amsterdam & FC Twente and is the top goal scorer in history for Holland U17's so he must be a good player to beat Van Nistlerooy, Van Persie, Bergkamp etc to that claim... He is going to be huge!

Name me ten strikers that score more than they miss?

We haven't got more than enough firepower, Campbell is the only striker that has PL experience, Maynard is unproven and AC hasn't played any British football.

I'll explain myself a bit better - yes, most strikers tend to miss many chances but the ones Bent misses, most strikers would put away - even our own, I think. He does score goals but he misses some real sitters.

He is a proven premier league goalscorer......our strikers are not? Simple he is better than what we already have.

Re: Darren Bent

Tue Jul 23, 2013 3:11 pm

I really don't get it when people say we have 'more than enough firepower'

This isn't the Championship any more! Maynard and Campbell are excellent Championship strikers, but completely unproven in the Prem! Add to the fact they've both had a number of serious injuries in recent years, imagine they were both injured at the same time, who would we be left with? Rudy and Cornelius. Again, two completely unproven players. I know the injury thing is worst case scenario, but I still think we need one more striker minimum, probably two.

Just for the sake of it, my transfer list would be;

Darren Bent
Callum McManaman
Chris Eagles
Scott Parker
Fabio (loan)
Joel Campbell (loan)

Re: Darren Bent

Most of our side is unproven in the Prem - but I don't see that as an excuse to flood the side with signings, especially the front line. A few quality additions here and there, yes - but the way some people talk, we ought to f**k half the squad off as they're apparently not good enough to play in the league they've bust their bollocks to get to?

Woah now pal. I have stated earlier on in the thread that our squad is talented and we only need to add with experience and maybe a couple of youngsters. So don't go spouting shit like that.

This is about our front line and we need a player that is experienced. Bent fits that category.

We also need a RB, CB, WINGER, CDM, and back up for Marshall.

No-one has said that in this thread. I have given my reasons and so too have others. You just have selective reading I guess.

That's the impression I'm getting from a lot of people on this forum though. I agree we need a few additions, certainly in defence, but as I say, the general impression I get from many forumites here is that suddenly, half the squad is now no longer fit for purpose...

Some of the players will not make it in the Prem but not half the sqaud, its likely that most of them will be impact players IMO, like Maynard, Noone maybe even Conway.

We need a balance of youth, experience and talent.

We have two of the those, the one we dont have, is enough experience.

Malky said himself there is no time for sentiment.

Reading worked hard to get promoted, barely improved the squad and come crashing straight back down without as much as a wimper.

Southampton cast aside half their team and upgraded. They sent Billy Sharp packing and he played a huge part in getting them over the line.

Anyone who thinks we wouldnt need Bent because we have several unproven at top level strikers is seriously deluded.

Having a 15-20 goal striker could be difference between staying up or not.

Id like to see us sign a striker with a proven track record to compliment Acorn and Campbell.

I'm glad some can see sense in buying Bent or someone of his calibre and experience.

So I have seen (smokescreen, who knows). To me it does matter, putting our faith in two unproven strikers one of which is only 20, doesn't fill me with great confidence. We need a bit of experience and a proven goal scorer in that area.

That's my opinion.

Darren Bent edges closer to Newcastle move

England striker Darren Bent is close to completing a move to Newcastle United, according to reports.

Bent said yesterday that his exit from the club is imminent and it seems as though Newcastle have stolen a march on Fulham, who pulled out of a deal for the 29-year-old due to his wage demands.

Bent is currently earning £80,000 a week at the Midlands club, but the Belfast Telegraph reports that Alan Pardew has compromised on a £50,000 a week deal for the former Ipswich, Charlton and Tottenham Hotspur forward.

"I'm pushing Joe [Kinnear] to get a transfer in," said Pardew. "I think we need a boost now. We are in a situation where we want to progress now."

Bent was signed by Aston Villa in a club record £24m deal in January 2011, but has found himself increasingly marginalised under Paul Lambert.
