You're probably too young to remember 1974 V Man Utd and Doc's Red Army invasion - trust me anyone who is old enough to remember - will never forget that one. Older United fans won't forget either!

In school at the time, two seasons before my first City game, but being primed by my mates at the time who went to this match. They recon 20 thousand Man U fans came from near & far to Cardiff that day, & the photos & articles of the time pretty much back this up. :D

No mate. 10,000 reds were approx in the bob bank. I was outside central station with 15 or so valley boys at 8.30 am on the Saturday morning and trouble started soon after that, I saw running battles around the station and near the old swimming pool. It kicked off from around 9am till 6pm and i'm talking pretty much the whole time. I cannot remember the name, but the pub opposite weather spoons was smashed up by United fans. They hung around the station area waiting for the trains to come in. Unfortunately for quite a few of them who straggled further out and into town were picked off by groups of city - out looking for trouble. Things started turning nastier after 12pm when hundreds more Cardiff came into central. United fans ran a gauntlet of ambushes all the way to the ground. Many waited until they were in groups of 100 or more and thought they were safe to make the journey to the ground - which they were not. A lot of guys went to that game that day - had not been to a Cardiff game before - and went just for a punch up. Trouble continued in the ground throughout the whole match - non stop! 2 Fences separated the bob and grange ends and both sets of supporters were toe to toe at times in between the fences. Missiles, rocks and coins were constant ( i got hit with a coin - stung my bloody head  ) the Grange end roof had holes appearing in it. One United fan had a small suitcase with him, and at half time he opened it near the shop and it was full of rocks - which he began to throw  The grange end was so packed you could hardly move. After the game, running battles continued between 2-3000 up Sloper Rd, I heard Utd fans chant 'Cockney Reds" it was again pretty much toe to toe but Cardiff eventually got the upper hand and they were chased back to the train station.. Quite a few Utd fans were caught when they fell over. In the ground the atmosphere was electric from start to finish and many never bothered watching the match as you were constantly watching for the next missile coming back and for. I've been to many games but nothing like that one!

A long time ago Rick. That season, United fans spoke only of 2 places where they did not have things their own way so-to-speak. Cardiff and Millwall. However, the Millwall game for them was a night game and one of their special trains apparently broke down and not that many went. However, the one they really talked about was the day they came to Cardiff!

In all honesty, the police that day lost control but in fairness to them - there was too much going on in too many place at once. I've never heard so many sirens going off( both police and ambulance) in a game before that match or since for that matter!.

Got a Leeds lad subbing for us now.He reckons when they were walking into NP for the Cup game
it was worse than Galatasaray. Could not believe the Bob Bank was our ''home'' end - because he said the
stand to his left was seething with hatred, and to their right hundreds of maniacal looking teenagers
were frothing at the mouth. Quite a few Leeds fans were saying they were worried the players might not
cope with the atmosphere - well they werent wrong were they :malky: :malky: :malky:

Been going since early 80s. Seen some good times. Promotion winning games such as orient, Shrewsbury and Crewe. Play off v wurzels and trundles return. Cup games were best-Chelsea in league cup and spurs, man city and Leeds in FA cup were fantastic

When I first started to go down the city ,older lads would tell you all the old stories, the one I was told about utd. was they got ambushed by the house of Holland and 2 utd. was thrown off the bridge into the Taff, something I haven't heard about any where else, another story I was told was when Millwall played around the same time, the old Ninian pub was derelict and the site was surrounded by mounds of rubble ,behind the mounds was Millwall who bushwacked the city walking to the match pelting them with stones, anybody ever hear that story?

We played carlise in i think 93 or 94 night game for some reason the atmos was buzzing. A black player for carlisle cant rememberhis name but when he scored he ran the length of the bob bank to celebrate.

haven't heard the Milwall story before, so don't know if that's true...as for best atmosphere, not trouble, then I'd go for Crystal Palce Home, 73/74, when Villars scored...Leeds home early 70's, 50,000 crowd, and the Real Madrid home game...

I'd also heard that rumour that Utd fans had been thrown into the Taff - so must be some truth in that one.

Ledds, millwall, wurzels, chelsea, jacks, newport, man city, wales v scotland, european games etc all great games and fantastic
memories
Tell ur Leeds mate that we were the lower grandstand to his left!!!

A game that sticks out to me for atmosphere was a rumbelows or freight rover cup match I think against Plymouth.
it was a tuesday night and less than 2000 in the ground.
We were 1 v 4 down at half time.

Second half we got in to them and we got to 4 v 4 and then won 5 v 4.

The noise that tiny crowd made was unbelievable. Everyone in the bob bank was singing - really amazing night.

and that along with the others you've all mentioned sticks with my in my ninian park memory library :ayatollah:

Leeds in the FA cup was by far the best and loudest I ever heard Ninian, I was at the Man City FA cup game but was only about 8 so cant remember a lot of it if I'm honest.

Another one which sticks in my mind was West Ham in the league cup, I think at the time they were in our league but we played them in cup first not long after the Queen Mum had died, I remember the Grange End chanting "wheres your queen mum gone?!!" and a few West Ham boys were trying to climb over the wall to get in the home end behind the Grange at half time!!

Great memories
