Re: 1980's fans

Basically through the 80s when we were playing well and going for promotion we had a good following. Most of the time though we were bad and so was our following. When we were bad without doubt our following was made up of casuals/lads or for a more known term hooligans.

I lived away then up North so got to go to a few of the away games, even midweek ones. To put it into 2 words our following that night was "gang culture". I use to travel along and stuck out like a sore thumb, got a few funny looks trust me on that one. I never got into any trouble nor was threatened which remembering some of the expressions was a damn miracle.

In the 80's and up to fairly recent times CCFC had a certain brand of fan. They would turn up in their droves when clubs with a desent away following would come to NP. You would never see them until the next "lads day out." Others would go to away games only.....it was widely accepted.

A good number of fans also had a second club...usually clubd that had a "hooligan" reputation.

I dont remember anyone slagging these fans off.

What's worse? Local people following their club or those that were interested in violence ?

I believe many have started following their club again due to trouble being eradicated at CCS. Of course some follow because we have become succesful...what's wrong with that? Would you pay £30 to watch shite?

Nothing 'wrong' with that, McPhail, but it was how it was (ironically a part of our history and tradition that most are glad to see the back of  ) and things have now 'moved on'

The 'new' supporters are as welcome as any other IMHO and are fortunate enough not to have seen the days when fighting was rudely interrupted by 22 guys and some guy in black with a whistle kicking a ball around!

Long may it continue :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

You sound like a right laugh fair play. I'm sure these 'cowards' were your friends when you got caught up in it in games and I'm sure back in those days even if you weren't looking for it, you got caught up in it. I got friends who have been known to get caught up in it and speaking from experience it's good to have these people around sometimes.

Obviously the poster is plastic as he stated he wouldn't pay £30 to watch shite, we all paid the going rate in the 80,s as we loved our club what ever division we were in and what ever shite they dished out, that's what you do if you truly love your club. The added buzz of the 80,s was just that, one massive buzz and great camaraderie with your mates who all stood together for CCFC, home and away :ayatollah: :old: :ayatollah:
