the cheapest car to insure i found was a citroen C1 / toyota aygo / peugeot 107, but for a new driver it'll be £3000 plus at best, its total wallet rape to the point when i figured it'd be cheaper to go everywhere by taxi!
using that black box will bring it down a bit, but you lose your freedom, have a driving curfew etc

Definately do the pass plus, your instructor will give you details, he may even do it himself. Also don't buy a golf as a first car like the other poster mentioned, thats just playing into rip off insurance firms hands. The length of time you've held your license is taken into account so pass your test as soon as possible even if you can't afford a car. My neighbour had a black box type device fitted to reduce his premium. It might be worth it for the first year. The only positive regarding your extortionate costs are that if you are a careful driver of a low insurance car you can almost guarantee your premium will reduce each year, although the biggest reduction will be once you reach 25.

THE CARDIFF LAD wrote:I'm looking to do my driving test in the next month and then I am going to purchase a car. The only problem is everywhere I look the insurance seems to be so expensive, so expensive that I cannot afford it. I am talking £4000 for a 1 litre engine car that was made in 2001!!!
I have heard of this black box which I am seriously considering getting installed to lower my premium. Does anyone have any quotes? Ideally I don't want to be paying more than £1.5k a year, even then I am pushing the boundary!
Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you!
Move to NZ... Can drive at 15 and not illegal to not have insurance
If you do want it, it's cheap as f**k. My mate pays 700 dollars for his BMW m3, thats 350 quid
I pay about 400 dollars for my motor which goes like the clappers
Make model type of car all irrelevant, age of driver pretty much irrelevant also

just to clarify something. having a black box fitted does not mean you automatcally have a curfew after a certan time.
co-op ask on your quote if you are likely to drive after 11pm . my son regularly drives after that time and you dont get penalised. he is constantly scoring 3 bordering 4 out of 5.

Personally if I had my way I'd up the driving age for boys to 21. They are no where near mature enough at 17. At that age they are out playing with their toys, that's why they stick those noisy exhausts on the cars so they can go Brooommm.... Broommmm... everywhere.
I'm going to tell you what pisses me off with comments like this. You're just being a stereotype and comparing the minority of people like me who just want a car to get around, to make life easier compared to the dick heads who like you said "drive like arseholes"
Problem is that the stereotype is correct too often so an insurance company gets your details and sees your a young male driver and has to cover themselves because of the muppets they have had to pay out on previously who were also young male drivers. Just got to take the hit in the first couple of years.
