Steve, for less than the price of a rental (I made that mistake last year :( ) you can go into Halfords or even try www.totalpda.com and get one for a fraction of the price and be able to keep it for future years. If you already have (or can borrow) a Tom Tom simply go on to their web-site you can buy the maps there to download with life-time updates ;)

I seem to remember you saying you are going out to California. If so, I no longer have a Tom Tom (new car has one in-built) but I do have a Western USA map on an SD card which I can try to update if it helps (originally used on a Tom Tom Go 500) :)

Just pm me if any good ;) :ayatollah:

Steve, the original Tom Tom's came with an SD Card (the ones you can put into your camera as well) but newer units have integral memories that can be downloaded straight off the web-site. I'll have a look to see if it can be updated and transferred straight on to a unit :ayatollah:

you'll have a fantastic time. I did Northern Arizona (Sedona, Flagstaff, Kingman and Williams on Route 66 and Las Vegas via The Hoover Dam. Was unbelievable and I can't wait to go back for longer either next year or the year after :ayatollah:

Yes mate, has the full North America maps.

I am over there regular, so bought one on expenses to save hiring one all the time.

Off the Los Angeles next Saturday for the week so it'll get some more use :)

Always happy to help a fellow Bluebird.....

You probably could a smartphone for example the Galaxy S3 which has pretty good navigations.
Or there plenty of site explain how to put tomtom onto generic Sat nav they you can put other maps on.
I have done this in the past.

I spent some time on Google maps before I went to Florida.

Think about where you are going in advance, then ask it for directions and print them up before you go. As someone said above, buying a cheap satnav whilst out there is much cheaper than hiring one for a fortnight.
