Arthur Scargill did what his members wanted, we voted to strike - he carried it out. We voted to save our jobs and our communities. I know it is hard for some to understand if they were not about duriing 1984-85, but she tried to murder us and split the community.

They went on strike because Thatcher started shutting down pits with years and years worth of coal still there to be mined, at the same time threatening whole communities. So if they tried to "get on with the job" it wouldn't have been long before they had no jobs to get on with. The miners had no choice but to fight for their jobs and their communities. She knew what she was doing, it was a deliberate attempt to force a show down...and it worked. Evil bitch.

Are you saying there are not coal reserves in South Wales and Yorkshire? She didn't lower unemployment at all, she used a sneaky tactic of putting the redundant steal and coal workers on incapacity benefit, meaning they didn't count on unemployment charts. Clever move but let's not forget that's why unemployment seemed low but infact wasn't.
