Peter Whittingham is in my opinion the best attacking midfield player in the Championship, or at least he was. I think you should be asking what type of player he has become playing in the role MM has given him this season.

In my opinion last night only Whitts, Bellamy and Conway were looking for the ball, both our wide players of Smith and Noone did nothing in the game and I was amazed Smith lasted until the end.

MM believes Whitts has become a better player over the last 18 months but for me the way the manager has him playing has destroyed the best attacking midfield player in the Championship.

PLAYING TOO DEEP. GUNNAR SHOULD STAY BACK NOT OUR BEST PLAYER.

Can't play a killer through ball when he's stood in the centre circle with two banks of four in front of him and minimal movement from the front players.

Short on confidence clearly and confidence has always been central to Whitt's performances.

Don't know what's happened to his set pieces. Corners either don't beat the first man or go far too deep and he's not been a threat from free kicks for months now.

I think he's played every minute of every game this season.

Perhaps he needs to have a rest.

He missed Birmingham away.

All about opinion but you Genuinely don't have a clue, whitts has carried us for years, attitude spot on and score us countless goals, gone from being a winger to defensive midfielder. Talking rubbish again forever blue

I thought he played really well defensively last night.

Re: Peter Whittingham he just goes missing time & time again

Wed Feb 20, 2013 8:39 am

Yeah, he's low on confidence and the players around him aren't helping. I just think they are all exhausted. Malky pushes them so hard in training I can see happening what happened last year with us and the year before with Watford where the players burn out in March.

I can't believe we started with so many players that started on Saturday last night. What's this massive squad for? I would have started Helguson instead of Campbell (he looked shot after 30 minutes!), Cowie instead of Gunnarsson, McNaughton instead of Turner with Connolly shifting to centre back and Kimbo instead of Tommy Smith.

We needed to keep things fresh last night and we didn't. Brighton made us pay for that mistake.

we were poor all round.. shouldnt av been any excuses, pitch was like a carpet. players were fit..

too many people had an off day..

connolly was awful, touch, distribution etc..
whitts and gunnar in the middle, looked like they had lead boots on. neither could run...

conway looked probably the better player of them all when he came on, direct running and making over lapping runs.

dont know what position tommy smith wanted to be in, but he was far too central leaving us nothing down the right appart from connolly.

lets just put it behind us and we must return to winning ways on the sunday. i also would personally prefer bellamy on the wings making more dangerous runs at the opposition rather than trying to win a header he has no chance of...

When did he last score too? He drifts most seasons...shame

last scored v Watford

The manager see's him as the anchor man of our midfield, playing in a deep role to collect the ball off the defence and build the attack. On a individual level it makes Whitts look average and ineffective but on a general level the team is doing far better with him in that roll, at least results and the table tell us that. Personally, I would love him playing more advanced, but I will bow to Malkys superior judgement. I would also say that, yes, he does have the talent to play a part in the Premiership.

Re: Peter Whittingham he just goes missing time & time again

Wed Feb 20, 2013 10:20 am

He's a deep lying playmaker, he sits back and views it all in front of him, he didn't have that bad a game, just a quiet one for his standards again.

I think he just needs a goal to get his confidence up, otherwise drop him to the bench and show him his place is not guaranteed like everybody else and make him work his way back, look what that did to the likes of Conway and Gunnarsson.

He was played too deep last night. We seemed to want to over complicate everything yesterday where as on Saturday we got the basics right.

Bit confused here..

Before Wolves game everyone was saying he werent't playing to his full ability because he was to defensive.

Few months later he has been played in the same position and people are saying he's lost it?

Wow.

Whittingham getting stick! Unbeleivable!! hes entitled to a bad run, is this the same bunch of fans crticising Whitts as those who boo'd the team when playing the ball back and at the final whistle!? Disgusting fickle fans!!

Re: Peter Whittingham he just goes missing time & time again

Wed Feb 20, 2013 11:46 am

He s not the same player in this deep role,he would benefit playing just behind the front two.by doing this malky would have to sacrifice width as you would need another holding midfielder in place. This might be the right time for this change because our backward and sideways pace is being found out

Aha......someone talking sense.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Is it because Malky doesn't really think our hoofball defence are any good at distributing the ball, and therefore plays Whitts in that position? Hmmmmm.

He may not enjoy this position AT ALL, but he is doing a job, he may think it's a shit one.

Corners, free kicks etc may be suffering because of this, maybe his head is down a bit.

Thoughts???

My honest opinion is that if we'd have won last night this thread wouldn't exist. You'd have to pay millions for a better player than Whitts.I thought overall we played as good as we played against Bristol and against a far better team too.One defeat......................I dunno, perhaps I'll hang myself with that red scarf I was given

Probably.

f*cking boo boys ruined our 2010/11 campaign and if we are not careful they will f**k this one up.

Spoilt bastards dont deserve promotion.

Last night was just one of those nights. Had them pinned back, creaed plenty but it just wouldnt go in. Shit happens sometimes but considering weve only dropped 5 points at home prior to last night its a f*cking disgrace there was groaning and boos.

God help we do make the PL with this crowd.

Agree with you but in my experience the home crowds have always been like that.I seem to remember back in 75 when the visitors were(would you believe it)Brighton.Similar to last night and they pinched a goal after we battered them.We lost and at the final whistle after we'd thrown the kitchen sink at them there was quite a bit of booing.I remember thinking"twats" and I thought the same last night.

He was poor last night but I don't know how anybody can even suggest in recent seasons he's gone missing.

It's f*cking shocking to be honest.

Re: Peter Whittingham he just goes missing time & time again

We play 424 and we expect a thoroughbred to plough the field. Malky has sacrificed Whitts for four up front. Drop one of them, play Cowie or Kimbo and let whitts float more- Then we see the real Peter Whittingham

By the way this is an embarrassment of a thread !

Shame on you all.

Its quite simple as far as im concerned.......Whittingham is only playing, week in and week out, on past reputation and not on current form....the real question is this....has Mackay got the balls to drop him?

He starts the season off in great form then just disappears, don't know if he under orders or not but he doesn't do anything,
I think it is time to use someone else, Kimbo or Mutch, lets face it they can't do any worse. And yes you are right, he will be slaughtered in the premier :ayatollah:

Lennie Lawrence did something similar and IMO ruined Kavanagh in the process.

Witts looks like he is lacking in confidence a little, he is will it at midfielder on the team sheet, he makes difficult situations look very easy. I thought he worked hard Tuesday.

Think like that then none of our Players are fit to be a Prem club and Fraizer Campbell must be crap has no Prem Club wanted him and he stepped down to a Championship club . In the ends Malky is playing Whits too deep

Re: Peter Whittingham he just goes missing time & time again

Peter Whittingham deserves to be treated as the legend he is by supporters of this Club. Malky has added aspects to his game which weren't there previously, such his tough tackling and defensive blocks. To berate a player who has displayed such loyalty to the Club by not leaving, is frankly unbelievable, and is a quality which seems to be lacking amongst certain sections of supporters. Remember the old adage - "Form is temporary, class is permanent." Never more appropriate to the magnificent Whitts.
