Nasty little fuckers with a painful nip (terrapins that is) why do you think there so many in Roath park lake ? remember they are not a natural species of these isles , once the mutant ninja turtle fad ended and all the little terrapins the kids wanted as pets grew up and showed what little vicious fuckers they really were parents crept out at night and dumped them wherever their was a lake,pond,drain and even down the pan .

How can they survive though?

Some of them are native to North America, so are accustomed to cold as well as heat.
Painted Turtles I had, they hibernate when it gets too cold, they can actually shut down
and live under water in the sandy bottom for months at a time without coming up for air.

they will eat anything. I used to like feeding mine live fish, or sardines, or even beef steak
but the problem is it messes up the tank too much

Some have a nasty nip. Snapping turtles will take your finger off
