NOT playing enough games could well turn out to be as bad as playing too many games

It wasnt a case of playing the reserves, more so the youth team, players that are nowhere near the first team, that was poor form from Malky.

I dont think anyone is saying play our first xi but the first team bench ie cowie, mason, kim.etc should have been given some game time imo.

As for those saying about injuries, get a grip, that can happen in the 20 league games we have left.

The first team bench? Have to disagree. What if Cowie, Kim, Mason had got injured?

What Malky did was to give young players 'allegedly' close to a first team breakthrough the
opportunity to impress in a highly competitive match.

We may have lost. But Malky will have learned a lot about his younger players yesterday

If your auntie had bollocks she would be your uncle.

Players can get injured any time. League, cup, training even. You cant take to the field worrying about getting injured ffs.

Giving first team squad members game time to keep them match sharp / regain some form would have been far more useful than playing kids nowhere near the first team imo.

But league games matter. If they got injured in a pointless cup you lot would be going mental.

The history books will read MT 2-1 CC regardless of what team was put out,in years to come the BBC will include it in it's annual reel as a huge giant killing act........we are getting too big for our boots,I personally hated the big clubs playing reserve teams and MT earned the right to pit their wits against the team top of the championship not their reserve team,I think people are forgetting who we are and where we came from.

If RVP had got injured you bet their ass they would have been.

Get out the 80's, the FA cup is dead.

Double bollocks.

By your reckoning, why not play the whole first team, to stop them getting stale??

Facts are. We have a decent first team squad. We've proved that over 6 months now.
We have back up when there are injuries.

What Saturday proved (and we needed to know) was that we do not have adequate back up
for the 'back up'

Cowie, Gestede, Mason... these lads play pretty much every week. If someone gets a knock,
if someone looks tired, if we need to change formation... on they come. But if THEY get a
knock... it seems we do not have the depth of talent amongst our youngsters to cover their
positions.

Common sense.

Just back from Macclesfield and I must say a tad disappointed at the result and I think Malky has now increased pressure on himself and his management team! Unlike getting knocked out by Northampton in the Capital one cup, the FA cup is one of the biggest cup competitions in the world still. I remember driving to Azerbaijan in 2009 and stopping in a garage to buy some petrol in a back road in North Turkey, but couldn’t find anyone on the forecourt or in the garage. I eventually found them huddled around a tiny TV in a back room watching the FA Cup final in black and white.

I can understand the logic of resting some key players and introducing some of the younger players into a competitive game against lower league opposition for an FA Cup tie, but in my opinion to rest nearly all of the first team squad and play just 3 fringe players 2 0f whom are teenagers was the wrong decision. At the moment I can not see many positives to come out of this decision, and has only served to put pressure on malky and his management team to deliver premiership football.

I would like to stress I attach no blame to the development squad who were selected to play today, who ran their socks off with plenty of enthusiasm and endeavour. What was clearly lacking was the experienced professional first team player with game time to help nurture them through the fixture, and give them confidence to develop.

Many of the700 supporters who made the trip (many of whom had just shelled out money to watch 4 games in 10 days on top of Christmas) still believe in the glamour and romance of the FA Cup third round, and I am disappointed for those fans. Many of my fond memories supporting Cardiff city since 1968 have come in the FA Cup; Spurs Wrexham 1977, Leeds united, Middlesboro, FA cup Final 2008. We have been headline news all the way home on the radio stations and phone ins. No matter whatever they say about resting players this was a Cardiff city first team fixture who are top of the championship, and they were representing our club in one of the biggest cup competitions in the world, and we got beat by non league opposition. It’s embarrassing and it hurts!!!!

I know Much Kimbo, Smith are all injured and might have played a part, but why couldn't we play Cowie alongside Mc Phail? connelly alongside one of the young center halves? Both player have not played every game over the Christmas period. Conway on one wing with Harris on the other? Conway has only played during the last month. Gustede and mason up front both need more game time or at least have them on the bench. I don’t think this done the youngsters any good losing the game in that manner during the last 5 minutes, and remember what happened to Leeds United when they were top of the premiership and we knocked them out!

It sounds good only 2 games during January but I much prefer to be playing once a week keeps you battle hardened. The only positive I can draw from this is that we will not have a potential fixture pile up in February as Bristol City got knocked out also but now Malky, and the team needs to deliver. he has been fantastic to date and deserves all the plaudits lets hope this cup shock doesn't start a down turn in our form.

Well written but dissagree with all of it.On reflection I think Malky did the right thing and I don't think this will affect a different 11 at all.

Could have even had Earnie on the bench and play for a little while

Re: Pressure now on Malky and his management team to deliver

vince. i agree with what your saying, but malky is in a sticky situation, some guy broke his leg in one of the games yesterday, if that was bellars or anyone of the first teamers there be uproar amongs us. i tend to think , the fa cup final, and the carling cup final. didnt do us any favours in the league. if we do go up this season. people will be saying its a masterstroke by malky. we are serious contenders for promotion this season. so i for one are happy we are out of the cups, no injuries and rested players.

I can see both sides to this, Malky needs to keep the 1st team fresh, however some of the squad such as rudy, Mason, Cowie even gunner could have had a run out. And with Wigan or bournemouth up next for the winners it would have been a good chance to keep these guys match fit and ready when needed. However if we go go up who gives a sh8t :D :D :D

We already have injuries thats the problem though. We cant keep adding them. As for we've proved over 6 months. Yes we have done, in the league. We went out of the Carling Cup early as well so we have not been tested in terms of depth playing in the league and cup at the same time over a duration of time.
